Strange Things About Chris Martin And Dakota Johnson's Relationship

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson reportedly had a baby gender reveal party in early October 2018, according to TMZ. The star-studded affair, which reportedly took place at Martin's Los Angeles home, boasted guests such as Sean Penn, Julia Roberts, and Johnson's famous parents, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. What's more, the couple supposedly launched a string of blue balloons into the sky, which would typically indicate that a baby boy is expected.

Except, well, maybe they aren't expecting at all. Johnson's publicist released a statement to Us Weekly denying that Johnson had a bun in the oven and said the party was simply a birthday celebration — which is possible, seeing as Johnson turned 29 the week before the shindig. TMZ said the rep had no explanation for the balloons.

That said, the maybe-baby isn't the only unusual thing about Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson's relationship. Let's take a closer look, shall we?

They moved at the speed of sound

Johnson and Martin reportedly began dating in fall 2017, and by January 2018, insiders said the couple had grown really serious.

"Chris says a relationship has never felt so easy — he's thinks she's the coolest girl, and has already told her he loves her," a source told Radar Online, adding that Johnson is just as smitten with the "Yellow" singer and that wedding bells may be around the corner. "She's said they've already talked about the possibility of getting married next year — they just want to see how they go traveling together for Chris' tour first before they jump in too fast," the insider said.

Johnson has admitted that she tends to get attached easily.  "I think I'm a little bit heartbroken all the time, even when I'm in a happy relationship," the actress told Vogue in February 2017. "I don't do casual very well, and my feelings, even the good ones, get so intense that they hurt."

Well, at least one part of this relationship is permanent: Johnson and Martin reportedly have matching, albeit subtle, tattoos. The lovers boast small, tan-colored infinity symbols close to the insides of their elbows, reported Elle. Cute, right? But it begs the question: Did Johnson learn nothing from her mother's "Antonio" ink?

They're very private

Dakota Johnson has only acknowledged her romance with Chris Martin once to date. "I'm going to talk about it, but I am very happy," she told Tatler magazine in its November 2018 issue. Martin, for his part, has always has always kept relatively quiet about his relationships. He famously never walked one red carpet with his wife of ten years, Gwyneth Paltrow.

For her part, Johnson thinks red carpets as a whole — with or without a partner — don't mean much anymore in the age of social media and camera phones. "Now anyone can take my picture, and I can take anyone's picture, at any moment. I feel like something has been lost," she told Net-A-Porter in 2016. "It's like a little bit of magic is slipping away and I don't know why."

Her parents have strong opinions about their relationship

Johnson and Martin have been quite private about their relationship, but Johnson's parents, Hollywood heavyweights Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, apparently have no issues running their mouths about her romance with the rocker.

An insider told Radar Online in January 2018, "Dakota's parents can't help but worry that Chris is eventually going to leave her with a broken heart. Don was a huge player himself when he was younger, and he's convinced Chris hasn't gotten that out of his system yet."

However, mom and dad seemed to have had a change of heart since that spy spilled the tea. Don told People in May 2018 that he'd met Martin. The same month, Griffith gushed about the Coldplay frontman to Us Weekly. "I adore him!" she said, "But [Dakota] is very private about her life and I respect that."

They've partied with his famous exes

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin attended Ellen DeGeneres' 60th birthday party in February 2018, reported People. Also there? Chris Martin's ex-wife, Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow, with her then-fiancé (and now husband), producer Brad Falchuk, as well as Martin's post-divorce rebound, (another Oscar-winner) Jennifer Lawrence. Johnson and Martin reportedly held hands as they hobnobbed with the A-list soiree's guests, including actress Diane Keaton, who later spill the beans on the hush-hush romance.

"I'm gonna talk about Chris Martin," Keaton giggled on The Ellen DeGeneres Show just days after the party. "He was with Dakota [Johnson], right? They're a couple. Got it? So, what I'm saying is, he's gorgeous. That face got better with time ... I had no idea until a couple days later when someone said, 'Did you know?' Yeah, how 'bout that? How could I not have known it was him?"

She apparently really wants Paltrow's approval

In January 2018, Radar Online reported that Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't a huge fan of Dakota Johnson, in part because of the approximate 12-year age difference between Chris Martin and the Suspiria starlet. However, Johnson reportedly really wanted to win Paltrow's approval. A source told Radar Online in July 2018 that relations between the actresses were "frosty at best" but that Johnson tried her best to appeal to the Goop founder.

"Dakota has been thinking of ways to improve their relationship," the insider said, claiming Johnson sought to give Paltrow a thoughtful wedding gift for her nuptials with Brad Falchuk, even though she and Martin not attending that conscious coupling in the Hamptons.

"Chris was hoping this would finally be the girl who Gwyneth would approve of," the source said. "Dakota is very serious about Chris and wants to settle down with him and be part of the kids' lives, but she knows it will be a whole lot easier if she's on Gwyneth's good side!"

They talk shop together

Dakota Johnson is reportedly already playing a big role in Martin's professional life and vice versa. Aside from being spotted at Coldplay shows, insiders told Us Weekly that Chris Martin often asks the actress for her opinions on his songs. In fact, one onlooker described a cozy date between the pair in December 2017. "She was catching him up on work and the different projects she has coming up," the spy told the mag. "She was telling him where she is going to be and asking him what he thought. They both seemed to really respect each other's opinions ... He hummed a little bit and asked her what she thought of a song. She clearly loves his music and was really into it."

But not everyone is into Johnson's alleged interference. An insider told Radar Online in March 2018 that Martin was more focused on fawning over Johnson than he was with recording the band's next record. "Chris' bandmates like Dakota, but the fact that he's dropped everything to be by her side is starting to get on their nerves. He's letting their music come second so he can focus on being with Dakota while she films her latest movie in Vancouver."

She had the hots for a co-star

Dakota Johnson may be in love with Chris Martin, but she reportedly lusts after another Chris: Her Bad Times at the El Royale co-star Chris Hemsworth.

"Oh my God. It's such a distraction," Johnson told Vogue Australia for its October cover story. "I was like, 'Guys, you've made a huge mistake getting him to do this, because everyone is going to forget everything that happened [in the movie] until this point.' Chris is going to come onto the screen, and his body is outrageous, it's unbelievable, like a crazy, crazy thing to look at, and his shirt's completely unbuttoned."

She didn't stop there. "No one on set could pay attention to anything else: it was so shocking, not in a sexual way at all, just, like, scientifically: How is it possible to look like that? Crazy!"

Just "scientifically." Okay, Dakota. Whatever you say.
