What You Didn't See On TV At The 2019 Golden Globes

The 2019 Golden Globes reared its star-studded head on January 6, 2019 at the Beverly Hilton in Hollywood. Like you'd expect from any televised awards show, it was absolutely chock full of witty banter, harmless roasts, glamorous gowns, and Taylor Swift hiding in a suitcase (okay, not in a suitcase this time, but hiding nonetheless). There was a seemingly endless tribute to Jeff Bridges' life-achievements, which he awkwardly had to sit through because he's still alive and nowhere near the end of his career (though his speech was inspiring, and the dude abides, so whatever). There was even some mandatory socially conscious — but not too political — commentary (barring Christian Bale's snide dig at Dick Cheney). Just another Golden Globes.

While Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book took home top honors, and A Star Is Born was sort-of snubbed (how dare they), what's really interesting is the stuff NBC didn't televise. From the sassy, anonymous drink server who stole the show, to Macaulay Culkin's ruthless Twitter trolling, here's what what happened where the cameras weren't rolling.

Fiji Water girl stole the show

A star was born at the Golden Globes. Nope, it wasn't Lady Gaga. It was the bold and beautiful Fiji Water girl (above, far right), who repeatedly photobombed celebrity snapshots while making sure our favorite talent stayed well-hydrated. With all the star power on the red carpet, who ever thought the staff would steal the show? Instead of ducking out of red carpet photos, like basically anybody who isn't a celebrity generally does, Fiji Water girl made "direct — and sultry — eye contact with the camera" as she posed behind the backs our favorite stars, including Idris Elba and Jim Carrey, reported People

Figi water eventually released the name of its mysterious "water brand ambassador" — Kelleth Cuthbert. "The award for Best Supporting Actress in (literally) Every Picture goes to FIJI Water Girl!" the water company said in a statement (via Page Six). As Lady Gaga said ad infinitum during her A Star Is Born press rounds, "There can be 100 people in a room, and 99 of them don't believe in you, but all it takes is one, and it just changes your whole life." Well, Fiji Water girl, we believe in you.

Emma Stone's dress took 800 hours to make

Emma Stone may not have taken home a Golden Globe for her supporting role in The Favourite, but her dress was arguably glitzier than the actual award itself. According to People, Stone's simple nude getup was anything but. It took a whopping "800 hours to create" — 800 hours!

It's not surprising that Stone, who is a Louis Vuitton brand ambassador, opted to wear a pale pink gown from the design house. The garment was decked out with "63,000 twisted glass tubes" that created a "scale pattern." It took 49 feet of fabric and 30 embroiderers to complete the dress, which she accessorized with with pink lips, shimmery eyeshadow, and a silver purse.

Stone took her fabulous dress as her date to the awards show. Though People also reported that the La La Land star has been dating Saturday Night Live writer Dave McCary, the notoriously private actress walked the carpet alone. Her flickThe Favourite, was nominated for five awards, and her co-star, Olivia Colman, took home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Taylor Swift snuck in during a commercial break

Any good Swifty knows that Taylor Swift has been dating The Favourite actor Joe Alwyn since as far back as 2016. Considering his flick was nominated for five awards, it makes sense that the "Delicate" singer would show her support during the ceremony. Yet, for a huge part of the night, it seemed like Swift was a no-show. Alwyn walked the red carpet alone and Swift sent a sweet, pre-recorded video message to A Handmaid's Tale actress Elisabeth Moss like she wasn't actually sneaking into the building in an oversized suitcase (which is, allegedly, a totally swifty thing Swift actually does).

As The Sun reported, Taylor has snuck into Alwyn's events in the past. This one was apparently no different. Entertainment Weekly editor Patrick Gomez first spotted Swifty sneaking in with security during a commercial break. "Security almost plowed over Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys to get her backstage," he tweeted.

Swift ended up surprise-presenting the awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. Even though it was Alwyn's big night, the supportive boyfriend was reportedly flirty with the songstress while she was walking off stage, according to Us Weekly.

Did Chrissy Metz really say that?

This Is Us is undeniably popular among Kleenex executives and those of us who need an excuse to bawl mid-week before gearing up for hump day; however, it wasn't so popular at the Golden Globes. The TV drama wasn't nominated for a single award in 2019 — and someone may have been a little bitter about it.

According to TMZ, Chrissy Metz got a little salty during a Golden Globes Facebook Live interview when she called out Glow actress Alison Brie "without realizing her mic was on." The star was reportedly heard saying, "She's such a b***h." Metz took to Twitter to call the claims "completely fabricated."

"I adore Alison and would never say a bad word about her, or anyone! I sure hope she knows my heart," she wrote.

So, what about the video evidence? It's kind of garbled and almost impossible to tell who she was referring to — but it apparently wasn't Alison Brie, who was nominated for her first ever Golden Globe. Metz is no stranger to nominations, so it's doubtful that she'd actually be sour, anyway.

Isla Fisher was Sacha Baron Cohen's backup plan

Sacha Baron Cohen ended up walking down the red carpet with his plan B. Thankfully, his wife Isla Fisher doesn't seem to mind that she was a backup plan. So, who was his first choice? Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who accused the Who Is America? host of "heavily" disguising himself as a "disabled US Veteran, fake wheelchair and all."

Cohen was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy for his controversial documentary-style show. According to Indiewire, Cohen formally invited the Alaskan politician to be his plus one after she appeared on and was cut from the series (seemingly because she didn't make a big enough fool out of herself).

"This show was a labor of love for over two years," he said (via Indiewire). "It is a shame they overlooked the amazing performances by the rest of the cast, particularly Dick Cheney and Roy Moore. Meanwhile Ms. Palin, despite being cut from the show, I hope you will accept my invitation to be my date for the ceremony."

Palin never took him up on the offer, so Fisher got dibs. Of course, she looked beautiful, and Palin was probably busy scoping out Russia from her backyard anyway.

Macaulay Culkin turned into a Twitter troll

Holiday season is over which means our old VHS copies of Home Alone can continue to collect dust again. Nonetheless, all eyes were still on Macaulay Culkin during the 2019 Golden Globes, but not for the reason you'd think. The former child actor took to Twitter to troll his brother Kieran Culkin, who was nominated for his role in Succession.

"Oh s**t! My brother is at the Golden Globes?! That is so cool," Macaulay tweeted, before asking Kieran to confront Lady Gaga about why she doesn't follow him on Twitter. The star also asked about where Kevin Hart went before he "Googled it. Nevermind" and blasted out a photo of Henry Winkler with his brother tucked in the background.

"HOLY S**T KIERAN IS NOMINATED??? WHAT IS SUCCESSION?!" he continued. "Man, I should really answer his calls more often. Thanksgiving is going to be really awkward this year."

Macaulay ended up bailing on the awards show broadcast after his brother lost his category and Alvin and the Chipmunks happened to be on Nickelodeon. Who can resist? The Pizza Underground frontman claimed the whole thing was rigged anyway.

Jameela Jamil hid jeans under her dress

The Good Place star Jameela Jamil has built a personal brand around feminist realness. When it came down to Golden Globes time, the actress was having none of the pomp and circumstance. Jamil was probably the only person on the red carpet rocking denim — but you'd never know unless you followed her on Twitter.

According to People, Jamil showed up at the awards ceremony wearing a bold, coral Monique Lhuillier dress, but it was in the mid 50s to low 60s and raining on and off throughout. Anyone who follows Jamil knows she doesn't fold under the pressure of traditional beauty standards like her impossibly glamorous TV character Tahini. She despises weight loss tea the way she probably hates having to freeze just to look glamorous. It shouldn't be surprising that the actress opted to wear jeans underneath her gown for an added layer of warmth — practical and pretty!

"An experienced woman wears jeans under her Golden Globes gown because it's forking COLD," she tweeted, adding on her Instagram story (via People) that she refused "to be cold for fashion."
