Best To Worst-Dressed At The 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards

The MTV Movie and TV Awards is arguably less stuffy than other award shows (think Oscars and Golden Globes) which means less traditional ball gowns and more risk-tasking ensembles on the red carpet. Need proof? Travel back with us all the way to 2000, when actress Halle Berry donned a fringed crop top and mini-skirt that showed off a white G-string. Talk about a bold look, right? As for the guys, we'll never forget when comedian Sacha Baron Cohen showed up to the event with no pants, opting for leopard underwear instead. Yep, the MTV Movie and TV Awards is an event where anything goes.

But just because the ceremony is more lax, it doesn't mean there aren't any standards to uphold. You can be creative and daring while still being fashion-forward — a memo Handmaid's Tale star Elisabeth Moss took to heart when she arrived to the 2019 show in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 15, 2019 wearing a black mini-dress adorned with a magnificent silver dragon snaking down the side of her body. As Full House's Uncle Jesse would say, have mercy!

Although Moss and a few other dashing celebs stole the show, others graced our naughty list for placing too much emphasis on shock value. Interested to see who made the cut and who fell short? Put on your best designer duds and let's relive the best to worst-dressed at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Elisabeth Moss' look breathed fire

Handmaid's Tale actress Elisabeth Moss tends to opt for flowy dresses when it comes to the red carpet, but she stepped outside of her comfort zone when she rocked a satin black mini-dress with a shiny serpent running down its side at the 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards. Making the look even more spicy? One of the sleeves was mesh, adding another layer of cool to the entire look. Oh, and can we talk about her hair? We love how Moss pulled her tresses back but left a few messy strands behind to frame her face. She nailed the styled-but-casual vibe perfectly.

All in all, we're pleasantly surprised by this getup, especially since Moss once said that she was never keen on stealing the show. "I'm never interested in causing a splash or making a statement," she told InStyle in September 2015. We're glad to see that this actress decided to turn a few heads this year — sometimes it pays off to try something different.

Kiernan Shipka got creative in Fendi

Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka might not be a red carpet veteran yet, but there's no doubt she's on her way to the top. Case in point: Shipka killed it when she showed up to MTV's red carpet wearing a neon off-the shoulder Fendi dress covered in the high-end brand's logo. It was the right blend between artistic and traditional — a hard balance to nail no matter how well-versed in the fashion world you might be. We commend Shipka for choosing a clean bob to tie together the look — if you're going to go for an eye-catching dress pattern, it's best to keep your hair as simple as possible.

When it comes to Shipka's fashion philosophy, she tries to keep it fun, as she exemplified with her MTV Movie and TV Awards look. "For me, it's about not taking it too seriously — whatever catches my eye," she told Stylist in April 2019. "I like things that are basic and chic and adding in fun pieces here and there. I also love dressing up. If I'm going out — which I don't do a lot — and I get to dress up, I'm going to put on my heels." Keep living your best life, girl.

Dan Levy nailed it in red

Schitt's Creek Dan Levy star is arguably best known for his comedy, but at this year's MTV Movie and TV Awards, he made headlines for his ace fashion choices. Levy 100 percent stole the show in a bright red Alexander McQueen suit and white Burberry undershirt adorned with what appeared to be a large paper clip pattern at the neck. But best of all? Levy looked incredibly happy as he posed alongside his Schitt's Creek co-stars, proving that confidence is often the best accessory.

Fortunately for Levy, he gets to show off his fashion skills on and off the small screen. He talked to Pride Source about helping out his cast members with their fun looks. "I think I've always been excited about fashion, so to be able to style the show with our costume designer really just scratches that itch for me." It's nice to hear that Levy gets to flex his fashion muscles on the show, proving that you can have more than one passion in life.

Jada Pinkett-Smith was a sequin dream

Actress Jada Pinkett-Smith received the Trailblazer Award at the 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards, an honor she paid homage to with a fabulous silver sequin pant suit. Not only was the ensemble fun and glitzy, but it totally embodied boss babe vibes. And we got to give it up to Will Smith's wife for not overdoing it in the makeup department — with a mic drop look like that, you don't need to overdo it with lipstick or eyeshadow.

Of course, any fan of Pinkett-Smith probably already knows that she can rock any outfit thanks to her commitment to self-love. "Just take care of yourself. To me, that's the biggest beauty secret ever," she said, per Today. "It's the deepest self-love. When you love yourself, it shows. It's such a process. It's hard. It's not one pill you can take. It's not one thing you can do. It's a process and a journey. And one day you wake up and go, 'I've gotten to the next step.' And one day, you go, 'I'm [expletive] awesome.'" We love that body positive mantra.

Tana Mongeau's look was literal money

Okay, hear us out for a second: We think YouTube star Tana Mongeau totally slayed the red carpet in a dollar bill dress tucked into a life-size money clip. Not only was the outfit very realistic (seriously, who designed this phenomenal getup?) but it fit the vibe of the awards show perfectly. As for Mongeau's take on the outfit? It's clear she had a ton of fun with the look. "Call me daddy b***h it's my day," she captioned a shot of her ensemble. "Tag ur fathers so i can check them out but only if they make six figures and up."

Mongeau's dress was a big hit all around, with MTV declaring it was "obsessed" with her and her outfit via the comments section of her 'Gram. Another fan on Twitter dubbed her an "icon." Although Mongeau's outfit probably didn't hit the mark with everyone (it's a bit loud, no doubt about that), we've got to give her props for doing it up. Go big or go home.

Melissa McCarthy was a disco queen

Actress Melissa McCarthy is one of those stars who walks to the beat of her own drummer, as evidenced by this glam and retro getup she sported on MTV's red carpet. For starters, you can't go wrong with a stylish jumpsuit, especially when sequins are involved. And the cool factor is multiplied when you can accessorize it with a pair of shades, which is exactly what McCarthy did with her ensemble.

Unfortunately, fashion hasn't always been so easy breezy for the comedian. Just a few short years ago, she had trouble finding designers with which to work. "When I go shopping, most of the time I'm disappointed," she told Redbook in 2014. "Two Oscars ago, I couldn't find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers — very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people — and they all said no." Ugh. We're glad to see that McCarthy was able to rise above all that negativity.

Mischa Barton's ensemble was not a win

Don't get us wrong — we absolutely love Mischa Barton and The O.C. It's just that we can't help but feel like this black dress swallowed her up, completely overshadowing an actress who is beautiful inside and out. We would love to see Barton in something a little more updated and fresh, especially since she's set to appear in The Hills reboot

Perhaps Barton is saving up her energy for a future fashion line ... but only if the stars align. "I had a couple of people approach me, but it's not something I take seriously yet," she told The New York Times in May 2019. "I really think it would have to be the right people." Given the rough years Barton has endured, we don't blame her for taking things slow. We wish her only the best going forward.

Noah Centineo looked relaxed, very relaxed

Although we think actor Noah Centineo is the cutest, we can't help but wonder what he was thinking when he decided to don a black t-shirt and pants to the 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards. This occasion calls for something a bit fancier, doesn't it? What really confused us was his accessory — a camera. Was Centineo trying to make a statement about the paparazzi? Color us bewildered.

We're not sure why Centineo decided to play it cool on the red carpet, but it's possible he's just not into the whole fame thing. The actor likes to disconnect from social media when he gets the chance, and he prefers outdoor activities to surfing the internet. "The other day I went up to some dunes in Malibu and just turned off my phone for, like, eight hours," he told The New York Times in September 2018. "I leave my phone in the car when I go hiking or when I'm at the gym."

Did Frankie Delgado just roll out of bed?

The Hills star Frankie Delgado is an arguably likable figure (we love a good goofball), but we didn't love his just rolled out of bed look. No, literally — it looked like Delgado sported his everyday pajamas for the event. Maybe the reality star mistook the jammies for a suit? We're not sure what went down here.

To be fair to Delgado, he is very busy these days. From managing various nightclubs around Hollywood to #DadLife, he's probably running on empty half of the time. But even through Delgado has a hectic schedule, he always manages to make time for his family. "I dedicate Tuesdays to my kids and wife, he told Us Weekly. "I make sure that I wake up at 7 am to take my daughter to school and I pick her up at the end of the day. I have lunch with my wife and we go to the movies. We have a routine and it works." Okay, we'll try and cut some Delgado some slack here — he's clearly doing his best.

Care to explain, Nick Cannon?

Where do we even start with Wild 'n Out star Nick Cannon's red carpet look? From Cannon's Louis Vuitton bulletproof vest to his Mortal Kombat-style face mask, we couldn't deal — especially when it comes to those perplexing tan capris. In one word, this outfit is busy.

Other fans were on the same page, with one person tweeting: "Can someone tell me what the hell Nick Cannon was wearing tonight during the MTV awards lmao." Another critic joked: "Does turning 40 really hit this hard?" Ouch.

If you've followed Cannon from the jump, you're probably not surprised by his fashion choice. From a butterfly print suit to a bucket hat, Cannon has sported plenty of curious looks throughout the years. Hey, you can't knock Cannon for being himself, right?
