The Real Reason Emma Roberts And Evan Peters Broke Up

While keeping up with the Kardashians may seem like a headache at times, keeping up with the status of Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' volatile relationship makes the former look like a walk in the park. Although the American Horror Story ex-co stars are, at the time of this writing, officially over (for now), their relationship was one filled with drama and alleged deceit.

First things first, let's rewind. As Roberts revealed on Chelsea Lately (via E! News), the pair met on the set of their movie, Adult World, in 2012, yet didn't start dating until after filming wrapped. By January 2013, the duo went public, walking the red carpet at an afterparty for the 70th Annual Golden Globes. Soon enough, the couple was spotted everywhere, from sightseeing in Paris to strolling in New York.

Unfortunately for the A-list match, things started going sour — not even a full year into their relationship. "Their romance is pretty extreme," revealed an insider to Us Weekly, adding that, "They just behave in a way that's very passionate." Throughout all the breakups and make-ups (and trust us, there were plenty), it looks like these two just couldn't make it work. Let's take a look at the real reason Emma Roberts and Evan Peters broke up.

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters dealt with a dicey domestic abuse incident

Is there a story that tabloids love more than a celeb relationship gone horribly wrong? Not even after a year of dating, TMZ broke the news that Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' relationship had gotten physical. As the outlet dished in July 2013, police were called to the pair's Montreal hotel room after a fight was heard. Once the cops arrived at the scene, they spotted Peters with a bloody nose and bite mark and "immediately arrested" the Scream Queens starlet. As sources close to Roberts told the outlet, "Emma and Evan were hitting each other and she was arrested because he had obvious physical injuries." Hmm.

The timing couldn't have been worse for the actress, as only days after the news broke, her interview with Nylon hit the stands. Ironically enough, Roberts spoke about her public image, claiming that "a lot of people perceive [her] differently." The biggest plot twist was that she talked about "making mistakes," where she dished, "I can't say I'm never going to mess up, but if I do, I'll definitely be very sorry."

While you think Roberts' chompers would be enough for Peters to end the relationship, he decided against pressing charges, and his girlfriend was released a mere few hours later. While the incident was brushed off at the time, perhaps this was more of a mental wound that never truly healed?

Emma Roberts was allegedly at the center of a love triangle

Things were surprisingly going quite well for Emma Roberts and Evan Peters after their highly publicized domestic violence scandal. Then, suddenly they weren't — and then they were again. Confused? Bear with us. In December 2013, the American Horror Story actor popped the question to his co-star girlfriend, with the pair going public with the engagement by January. 18 months later, they abruptly called it off, only to get back together in August 2016.

Here's where things get shady. In September 2017, news broke that fellow A-list couple, Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen had called it quits after ten long years together. The reason? As a source exclusively dished to The Blast, Roberts was "at the center" of their split. As it turned out, the actress had allegedly gotten close to Christensen while they were on set of their flick, Little Italy, and the former O.C. starlet reportedly found "inappropriate" texts between the two, causing her to leave her beau immediately.

While you'd think that would have been the straw that broke the camel's back in Peters and Roberts' relationship, too, it remarkably wasn't, and as an insider revealed to Us Weekly, the couple was still "very much together." Again, much like the domestic abuse incident, perhaps this love triangle set off some warning signals in the long-term.

Did Emma Roberts and Evan Peters turn the AHS set into a nightmare?

The topics that surround each season of American Horror Story are truly grueling to watch. With the themes so dark, you'd think that the cast would try to keep things upbeat while the cameras aren't rolling. For Emma Roberts and Evan Peters, however, it looks like that wasn't an option. As it turns out, the AHS co-stars had trouble separating their personal lives from their professional ones — even from the get-go. As Roberts dished on Chelsea Lately (via E! News), the pair met during the filming of their indie flick, Adult World. "I actually, on the set, was like, 'Oh yeah, we're totally gonna date.' And I would like flirt with him," the starlet explained.

However, by the time they already shot a few seasons of AHS together, the couple was allegedly driving the cast mad with their turbulent relationship. As an insider revealed to OK!, the pair was either "constantly kissing or fighting" on set, adding that, "as soon as the director yells 'Cut,' Emma and Evan are making out. That is, if they're not screaming at each other." Yikes.

By 2019, after the couple's final breakup, Peters finally quit the show, and as per The Sun, claimed it was due to the "exhausting" nature of taking on such dark roles. While that may be the case, perhaps he wanted to close the final chapter of his own romantic horror story.

Was Emma Roberts ready for a serious relationship?

Throughout all of their ups and downs, it looked like whenever Emma Roberts and Evan Peters threw in the towel, the starlet seemed to bounce back at a rapid rate. Following her second split with the Dark Phoenix actor in May 2016, Roberts was already spotted with a new man, Christopher Hines, by June of the same year.

A pattern seemed to follow after the Palo Alto star's 2019 break up from her long-term love, too, and as Us Weekly dished, shortly after Roberts and Peters ended their second engagement in 2019, she was linked to Tron: Legacy actor, Garrett Hedlund, who, at the time of this writing, she's still dating.

After enduring so many breakups, it looks like Roberts finally has a mountain of experience that'll hopefully ground her going forward into her next serious relationship. In a 2019 interview with Cosmopolitanfollowing her breakup from Peters, the actress wisely explained, "I think that no matter who you are or what you do or wherever in the world you are, anything ending is hard." She added, "Losing something is hard ... I'm realizing that life is highs and lows. I'm trying to ride them out and live somewhere in the middle. When you're low, you think it's never going to end. When you're high, you're so scared of it ending. And I've lived in both of those places for too long."

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' relationship was 'toxic'

Although it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out, it's safe to say that Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' relationship was downright toxic. In fact, it's even something a source close to Peters revealed to Us Weekly after his final breakup from Roberts. "Evan was so in love with Emma and their relationship became very toxic. They had the highest highs and then would not speak for days."

Another factor that could have contributed to the couple's negative breeding ground? Starring in American Horror Story. As Peters revealed to Entertainment Tonight, he would work on getting into the "mindset" of his creepy characters, adding that he "dove" into "who they were, what they believed in and what they were going for." Throughout it all, Roberts was right by his side, too. "Emma was very cool, and just sort of allowed me to be me and do my thing."

So, has Peters moved on to something healthier? Time will have to tell on that one, but at the time of this writing, Peters has been linked to "Without Me" crooner, Halsey. The best part? "Evan's friends really like Halsey and think they are the perfect duo," an insider dished to Us Weekly. We certainly know New Jersey-bred singer has been waiting to date Peters, as her adorable crush on him dates all the way back to 2012!

Is Emma Roberts a diva?

It looks like diva tendencies may run in the family, as Julia Roberts' niece has had a few hiccups during her climb to the A-list. "Emma is very dramatic," a source revealed to Us Weekly, adding that the starlet can get "'wound up' during arguments." Although Evan Peters hasn't admitted to any issues, Roberts has had her own past hiccups with her temper, both professionally and in her personal life. Per the Daily Mail, back in 2013, the actress allegedly tried using her star power to cut the line of a popular New York bakery — only to get sent all the way back again. Umm, awkward much?

Fellow A-listers have supposedly spoken out about Roberts' diva tendencies, too, such as a witness that dished to Star that her American Horror Story co-star, Gabourey Sidibe, butted heads with the young starlet. "Emma complains about the tiniest things and won't speak to crew members," the source told the tab, adding, "Gabby finally told Emma to cut her attitude and stop being rude."

If that wasn't enough, rumors swirled that Roberts had issues with her Scream Queens co-star, Lea Michele, in 2016, as well. According to InTouch (via Yahoo! News), an insider revealed that the two starlets were "always at each other's throats," adding that they even went as far as to ignore one another on set or call each other names. Scream queens, indeed.

The glare of the spotlight was too much for Evan Peters and Emma Roberts

Breaking up is hard, but doing it in front of millions of people? The pressure must be insurmountable. In a 2019 interview with Cosmopolitanpost-Evan Peters breakup, Emma Roberts admitted how hard it is to live in the public eye and have fans pay so much attention to her personal life. "It's hard enough to be with someone by yourself, let alone with an audience. Growing up is hard. Sometimes it makes me sad that I can't have a private moment," she mused, adding, "Because of Twitter and Instagram, there's a whole other element where everybody can comment on what you're doing, and no one knows the real story. That's hard."

The Nerve actress echoed a similar sentiment to LA Mag later that same year. "Relationships are hard enough between two people, let alone two people and the entire internet. People say, 'Why's it so hard for celebrities to have relationships?' My answer? 'Do people photoshop their face over yours with your boyfriend?' It's just a weird thing."

While the fan-made photoshopped photos may not have been the only cause of Roberts and Peters' breakup, we have a feeling that the cyber-bullying definitely didn't help.

Their engagement dragged on and on

Evan Peters and Emma Roberts' engagement lasted a long time, especially considering he originally popped the question back in 2013. Minus the time spent apart during their various breakups, they were set to be wed over the course of a remarkable six years!

What's more, is that the engagement itself may have been a pricey one — for both parties. After the duo called off its initial "I do's" in 2015, the Aquamarine starlet was naturally seen sans engagement ring — until she was spotted sporting some different bling. According to Allure, "[Roberts] replaced that engagement ring with three others on her left hand, gold rings that she bought for herself after 'a breakup.'"

As for Peters? The actor had to doll out even more money for their second engagement. According to Brides, Roberts' 2017 sparkler looked "to be a diamond and onyx ring on a gold band," which was very different than the original "two-to-three carat round-cut diamond." We have a feeling buying all this jewelry certainly wasn't cheap for either of the A-listers.

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' relationship simply ran its course

Considering Evan Peters and Emma Roberts had their ups and downs over the course of seven years, the real reason they broke up may have simply been that it was time for their relationship to be over.

In fact, it's a sentiment that's been echoed by those closest to the former couple, too. As an insider told Just Jared back in 2015, "Their three years together just ran its course. They have so many great memories together but couldn't make it work in the end. The breakup was amicable — there was no drama whatsoever."

It looked like the same thing happened with the pair's 2019 breakup, as well. "Emma and Evan were heading for a split and now are just friends," a source revealed to Us Weekly. "Evan has moved out. It wasn't a bad breakup." As for either celeb speaking out about what happened? At the time of this writing, their lips are sealed. As Roberts so succinctly put it to Cosmopolitan, "I think I know what's true, and I know what happened in my own life and so do the people who love me and who I love."

Their relationship got too serious, too fast

There's no denying that Evan Peters and Emma Roberts' relationship was one filled with turbulence. All things considered, it looked like the couple got too serious, too fast, as well.

Since then, it appears that both stars have moved on to healthier, albeit slower romances. Making it official with Garrett Hedlund shortly after her breakup with Peters, the Paradise Hills actress seems to be taking things at a leisurely pace with her new beau. "Emma is newly single and neither she nor Garrett are in the right headspace to be in a serious relationship," a source close to the starlet told People. "They're just having fun hanging out and hooking up."

As for Peters? He's been linked to Halsey since September of 2019, although the couple only confirmed their relationship in October when Halsey went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and called Peters her boyfriend. Much like his former fiance, however, it looks like Peters is taking his time with this blossoming courtship. As an insider dished to E! News, "A friend connected them and they had also been chatting over social media before deciding to hang out. It's still very new, but they are both interested in dating each other and hanging out." Aww! We here at Nicki Swift wish both Roberts and Peters the best in their new relationships.
