The Untold Truth Of Joe Exotic's Hired Hitman Allen Glover
The docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness is number one on Netflix for a reason: It's filled with eccentric and occasionally shady characters, who take viewers down a chaotic and windy road. Those characters include Joe Exotic (whose last name speaks for itself), a seemingly harmless country singer and zoo keeper who ends up plotting a murder, and his arch-nemesis Carole Baskin, who runs a big cat sanctuary and is later suspected of killing her missing husband.
If that's not enough to entice you into watching the show that's already received a 92% from Rotten Tomatoes, then consider this: What does your brain conjure up when you imagine a roadside zoo frequently visited by families and children? Upbeat music, carefree kids with cotton candy, and brightly colored attractions with cute and cuddly animals at the center, perhaps?
Now, imagine the stark opposite — that pretty much sums up Tiger King. The staff looking after the big cats (from tigers to leopards to cheetahs) is once aptly described in the series as a group of "misfits." Among them is a cult-runner who grooms young women, a one-handed zoo worker, a toothless and tattooed employee who was in a three-way relationship, and Allen Grover — an almost hitman, who was falsely rumored to have killed in the past.
Glover — who Exotic attempted to hire to kill his enemy Baskin — has more to his story than just being involved in Exotic's murder plot.
Allen Glover never intended to actually kill Carole Baskin
Originally a handyman for the zoo who joined after conman Jeff Lowe took the lead, Allen Glover played into Joe Exotic's game plan to kill Exotic's rival Carole Baskin during one of her bike rides on a dirt path. Glover asked for $5,000, a deal that would've entailed him bringing Baskin's head.
But as it turns out, Glover was never a hitman (despite his many run-ins with the law) and testified that he actually had no intention to follow through with this commitment to kill, per The Cinemaholic. Glover rocks a teardrop tattoo underneath his eye, which was misinterpreted as him having a history of murder, but his ink isn't for the reasons you think.
According to The Cinemaholic, Glover got the tattoo in honor of his late grandfather. But that doesn't mean his hands are completely clean — Glover does have a list of felonies under his belt, including assault charges, which landed him prison time.
He's had some struggles with drugs and alcohol over the years, making Glover (according to his account) incapable of killing Baskin. He had intentions to even warn Baskin of the plot at one point and hit the road to Florida, where Baskin lived. But he never made it there, stopping instead to party on the way.
As for his whereabouts since, not much is known. Glover was a longtime right-hand man for Lowe, meaning he could still be working for him.
