What Life Behind Bars Was Like For McBee Dynasty's Steve McBee Sr.

Steve McBee Sr. spent nine months in federal prison for multi-million-dollar crop insurance fraud between December 2025 and September 2026, and the experience hit him hard. After receiving a two-year sentence in October 2025, "The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys" main star had a lot of business to take care of before driving up to South Dakota to start his time behind bars. The reality TV star barely had time to think about what was ahead of him amid those tumultuous two months. 

The first 24 hours were the hardest. "The first day for dad was very, very tough," Steve McBee Jr., the eldest of McBee Sr.'s four adult sons and fellow "McBee Dynasty" star, said on the "More Than McBee" podcast in December 2025. Coming to terms with daily life proved difficult. "The food aspect, I think, was the biggest shell shock," McBee Jr. revealed, noting that his father told him, "The food is awful. I don't even know what I'd call bad food now if I was on the outside."

McBee Sr. didn't want to share much to spare his family, but he disclosed how bad life in prison was. "He's like, '...this sucks. This is way worse than I thought,'" McBee Jr. recalled. Over the holidays, he found joy in reading mail from fans and responding to all of those who included a return address. And as time went on, McBee Sr. found his groove and made the best of the situation. "He's focusing on fitness, reading books," his son told Taste of Country in June 2026. It wasn't easy, but it was a humbling experience that his son believes made him a better man.

Stars are rarely the same after being locked up, and Steve McBee Sr. is no exception. Prison changed him in more ways than one, and Steve McBee Jr. thinks the change was for the better. "I hope that the way that he talks now, the way that he acts now, and the things he says, I hope they stick whenever he gets out of prison," he said on the "Roxanne and Shantel" podcast in August 2026, shortly before the TV star ended his short prison stint the following month. "And if so, I think there's a lot of good things to come."

McBee Jr. went even further, arguing that prison afforded his father an opportunity he wouldn't have had otherwise. "I think prison and that time to do nothing but just read and reflect is going to be the best thing that ever happened to him," he said. McBee Sr., who was placed on supervised release to complete his two-year sentence in home confinement, let his social media fans know how grateful he was. "A little more appreciation for the simple things in life. ... Thank you Lord for all the blessings in my life," he captioned a September 12, 2026, Instagram post that included a video of a drive around the McBee Farm & Cattle property. 

Overall, McBee Sr. was happiest to be reunited with his family after so many months of constant worry about how they were managing to keep the ranch afloat in his absence. "It definitely brought us all closer together and really made us stick together as a family more than ever," McBee Jr. told People in June 2026.
