Country singer Ella Langley had an uncertain road to success before making history with her smash-hit "Choosin' Texas," which holds the record for most weeks at No. 1 on the "Billboard Hot 100" charts. The star was born and raised on a small farm in rural Hope Hull, Alabama. Born between her two brothers, she's the second-oldest child, and she also has a younger sister. Her parents, Jason and Heather Langley, always thought she would grow up to be a musician. "My mom tells a story where my grandpa sits down at the piano and we're going to do 'Amazing Grace,' and my mom's trying to help me with the microphone and I'm 3 years old, and I'm like, 'I got it. I know how to do it,' and everyone in church is laughing," Ella told Billboard in August 2024. "So this is what I've always wanted to do."

That's why when Ella made the tough choice to drop out of college, her parents supported her decision. She was attending Auburn University and studying for a degree in forestry at the time but realized in 2019 that she wanted to move to Nashville and kickstart her music career. "My mom would always say, 'This is your college. This is your schooling to move there,'" she revealed on "Katie & Company" in December 2024.

Ella is unrecognizable without her signature bangs, but she didn't always have them. Before making it big, she also described herself as a tomboy who enjoyed the outdoors more than focusing on her appearance. "I grew up in the country in Alabama between two rowdy brothers, so I spent a lot of my childhood trying to prove that I was as fearless and tough as they were," she told ProCountryMusic.com. She also likes to go fishing and hunting with her father.

Ella Langley's music career skyrocketed soon after she moved to Nashville

Ella Langley has had a stunning transformation over the years, and a lot of that can be attributed to her supportive high school teacher. While attending Hooper Academy, Langley would visit Coach Pop's classroom every Friday morning to play her guitar alongside him and his 12-string guitar. "When I found out she was going to Nashville, I called her right before school started. I gave her that guitar. So she took it with her," Coach Pop told WSFA12. The star has publicly thanked her former teacher multiple times and even brought him on stage with her.

After spending a couple of years in Nashville, Langley went viral on TikTok for her song "If You Have To" in 2021. In early 2023, she signed a record deal with Columbia Records and Sony Music Nashville. Her first mainstream hit came in June 2024 when she released the duet "You Look Like You Love Me" alongside fellow country music star (and "Marshals" hunk) Riley Green. Her debut studio album came shortly after, with "Hungover" dropping in August 2024.

As the singer began to rise in fame from her high school and college dropout days, she started frequently appearing at award shows and music events, scoring her first major award win at the ACM Awards for new female artist of the year in April 2025. In October 2025, she released her record-breaking lead single "Choosin' Texas," which she co-wrote with Luke Dick, Miranda Lambert, and Joybeth Taylor for her second studio album, "Dandelion." The record was released in April 2026 and featured other hit songs, including "Be Her." As Langley continues to top the charts and grow her fame, she's proven that dropping out of college was the best decision for her music career.
