Prince Harry's Ex Puts Their Relationship Downfall In Sharp Focus With Love Life Reflections
Before there was Meghan Markle, there was Chelsy Davy. Prince Harry dated the Zimbabwean heiress between 2004 and 2009, marking it his longest relationship before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding in 2018. When Harry and Davy broke up, he was 24, a decent age to start settling down if you're a member of the British royal family. But that's far from what Davy had in mind. Throughout her 20s and even well into her 30s, Davy wanted anything but to settle down, a choice she explained in a lengthy entry on the website for her jewelry business, Aya.
Without mentioning Harry, Davy implicitly put the downfall of their relationship in sharp focus by reflecting on her insatiable need for independence at that stage of her life. "Commitment wasn't exactly my strong suit. If I'm completely honest, the only thing I was committed to was having fun. I wanted the next trip, the next adventure, the next group of people I hadn't met yet," she wrote. Davy didn't want roots, and she didn't want to follow traditional rules. "I didn't expect anybody to change their plans for me, and I certainly didn't want anybody expecting me to change mine for them," she shared.
And Harry's reality would have required lots of the very things she was trying to avoid. "She was intelligent enough to see that from an early age," royal expert Ingrid Seward told the Mirror in 2025. Amid Harry's legal war against the British press, he also claimed that media scrutiny contributed to their split. "Ultimately, [Mirror Group Newspapers]'s activities led Ms Davy to make the decision that 'a royal life was not for her,'" he claimed in court documents (via Nine.com.au). Davy walked away and never looked back.
Chelsy Davy eventually settled down
Chelsy Davy wanted the world, not little feet running around. But eventually, her vision for the future changed. She was 35 when she met Sam Cutmore-Scott, right when the COVID-19 pandemic had begun to give her outlook on life a new perspective. "Covid happened. Travel stopped. The adventures stopped. And somewhere in amongst all of that, I met Sam," she wrote on the Aya website. Whereas she spent her youth avoiding marriage and commitment, Davy began to crave it. She wanted true love, and she wanted kids.
Davy and Cutmore-Scott tied the knot in 2022, after welcoming their first child, Leo. They have since added Chloe and Finn to the brood (seen below). Motherhood completely stripped her of the freedom she had spent her life protecting. But she was ready for it. "I sometimes say my children saved me from myself. ... I had an extraordinary amount of fun. But realistically, there was probably a limit to how long I could have continued on that trajectory," she continued. Had she come to that realization a bit earlier, would she and Prince Harry still be together? Probably not.
Her new life still looks vastly different from what would have likely gone down had she married into the royal family. "That break-up was probably the best thing that ever happened to her," a friend of hers told the Daily Mail in 2025. But she still harbors affection for Harry, having even attended his wedding. "I think we will always be good friends," she told The Times in 2016.
