Couples From 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days Who Called It Quits
Alongside the likes of "The Other Way," "Happily Ever After," and "Hunt for Love," "Before the 90 Days" is a spin-off from the dating franchise kickstarted by "90 Day Fiance." With no fewer than eight seasons and 139 episodes screened since its 2014 premiere, it can lay claim to being the most successful. Well, in terms of longevity and viewership anyway. The long-distance relationships that it documents don't always get a happy ending, of course.
The show that charts couples who, unlike the original, haven't yet started the process of obtaining a K-1 visa, has been responsible for its fair share of heartbreak over the years. Some pairings break up in front of the cameras the first time; others call it a day following the must-see, catch-up episode known as the Tell All. A few have made it down the aisle before heading for the divorce courts. Here's a look at a dozen examples.
Stig and Aviva
It's fair to say that there's no love lost between American Aviva Duhamel and the Belize singer and rapper Stig Da Artist. "He didn't even have the decency to call me, just did it over text," the former told the "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" cameras (via CinemaBlend) about the latter's ungentlemanly approach to calling things off. "Then, seconds later, [he] posted videos with other girls."
Aviva had previously been warned by her Belize-based aunt that Stig was seen leaving gigs with women who definitely weren't her niece. But blinded by love and her beau's convincing denials, she gave him the benefit of the doubt. However, alarm bells rang when Stig threw a spanner in the works: instead of living their best lives in Belize, he wanted to permanently move to the USA with the help of a K1 visa he hoped Aviva would file.
Stig perhaps pre-empted the backlash he'd receive for doing Aviva dirty, uploading a diss track — which sampled "How We Do" by The Game — to any haters. Suggesting he was an avid viewer of the show himself, he threw in references to many of his season eight participants.
Lisa and Daniel
Immortalized in Stig Da Artist's "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" diss track, Lisa Rosenberger had far more to worry about than the food poisoning. Her partner appeared to have another lady in his life.
Admittedly, so did Lisa. Indeed, she was technically still married to another woman, having spent most of her adult life in same-sex relationships. And Daniel Ejike Iwela didn't exactly take this news well. Still, he wasn't exactly in a position to preach. Not only was Lisa messaged by a woman who claimed he'd been attempting to charm her into a visa online, but her daughter discovered a contact in Daniel's phone listed as his wife!
Daniel tried to laugh off the latter after being challenged by Lisa, but that proved to be the final straw, and she called time on their relationship. Most viewers believe she was lucky to escape. She was often criticized by her other half, including removing her wig to reveal the hair she was born with, only for Daniel to call her out for looking old. Here's a look at the biggest "90 Day Fiancé" scandals.
Cortney and Antonio
"90 Day Fiancé" franchise regular Cortney Reardanz first appeared on the screen dating Antonio Millon in the inaugural season of "Before the 90 Days." But as regular viewers already know by the fact she later popped up on another spinoff, things between the pair didn't work out.
Indeed, the couple went their separate ways in 2018, with Cortney pondering on Instagram (via Yahoo! Entertainment) whether the pressure of the show could have played a part. "[I don't know] how any relationship survives reality TV." She also argued that her true personality wasn't allowed to shine on screen before acknowledging that she didn't exactly help in showing her best self: "I regret drinking and not putting more effort into my appearance, lashes, extensions, etc.," she admitted.
Despite having her heart broken by the experience, Cortney willingly signed up to appear on "Self-Quarantined" in 2020. Unfortunately, she wasn't any luckier the second time around. Although she appeared to forge a winning partnership online with Andy Kunz in the midst of lockdown, the pair soon called time when they were finally allowed to interact face to face.
Sean and Abby
"90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" viewers probably aren't surprised to learn that season one participants Sean Hiler and Abby St. Germain called off their engagement soon after their story aired. For they had to overcome all kinds of obstacles, not least their 27-year age gap, during their time on the show.
Jealousy was a major problem for the pair, who first met face to face in Haiti, thanks to the constant presence of an ex. Indeed, Abby's former boyfriend Chris was still very much in the picture during their early courtship: not only was he helping her out financially, he was even allowing her to stay in his apartment. Abby didn't help matters, either, when she accidentally referred to her new beau as 'Chris.' And things came to a head during a heated argument involving all three in which Sean demanded to see phone conversations between the exes. "There's a part of me that wants to say, 'Ok, you can have this guy,' knowing there's going to be more pain down the road," he admitted (via In Touch Weekly) in his confessional.
Abby did eventually move out and accept her proposal from Sean. But it seems as though the latter may have been a little too relaxed when making the next step. "[Sean is] a very good person! He just needs to stop making plans and actually start working on them," Abby remarked on Instagram after revealing she'd moved on to a new man.
Caesar and Maria
Season three participant Caesar Mack sure didn't leave anything off the table when he appeared alongside the object of his affections on the Tell All episode of "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days." In fact, he practically begged Ukrainian Maria Divine for a second chance.
"You'll always be there in my mind ... you're always like my first love, baby, you're my everything, baby," the lovestruck Caesar told Maria (via E! News) — who he'd been talking online with for several years — after revealing that the ring he'd planned to give her was still in his possession. The latter insisted she wasn't the villain that the show purported but advised the former that it was now time to let go. "Caesar you are stronger than you imagine," she said in a last-ditch attempt to make him see the light.
"I wanted to show her how bad I was fighting for her," a crestfallen Caesar went on to admit. "I don't know if she saw that ... I know whoever I'm with, I'll always have a place for her in my heart." Remarkably, Maria did appear to give him at least a slither of hope when she agreed to meet Caesar in Ukraine for the spinoff "Self-Quarantined." Unfortunately, the fact that she later scrubbed all snaps of the pair from her socials suggests things didn't end well.
Avery and Ash
Avery and Ash split up three times during the nine months their relationship was conducted entirely online. So it's not exactly a surprise to learn that the couple went their separate ways soon after meeting in real life.
Things between the pair looked positive toward the end of the fourth "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" season, with Ash insisting he was looking into obtaining a visa so that he could repay the favor and visit Avery. But by the time the catch-up episode aired, their romance had gone sour.
Avery acknowledged (via ET) that her "feelings were fading" the longer they were apart while also theorizing that Ash — who earned a living as a relationship coach — was afraid to show his true self. She went on to reveal that the breaking point came with an argument over a diet. Speaking to The Knockturnal before the breakup, Avery disclosed how much she valued openness and trust in a relationship: "Actions speak louder than words, so if the words are not aligning with actions then I would be concerned, but if they are open, communicative, and their actions prove to you their stance, then just trust that."
Rachel and Jon
"90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" participants Rachel and Jon Walters looked like they were becoming one of the franchise's success stories when they got hitched in 2018. Despite numerous obstacles — they maintained their long-distance marriage for a further six years.
Sadly, in 2024, American Rachel took to Instagram to reveal the devastating news that Englishman Jon's visa application rejected again, so they decided to go their separate ways. The latter had struggled to obtain the necessary paperwork thanks to a prior criminal conviction. Meanwhile, the former was unable to head in the other direction having failed to gain legal permission from the father of her daughter Lucy.
"Long distance relationships can be brutal on the toughest of couples," Rachel acknowledged (via Dexerto) in her announcement. "We fought hard for a long time and stayed strong for over seven years, waiting. However, the distance for so many years and so much consecutive time spent apart, time after time, has taken its toll." The reality TV star, who disclosed that she and Jon had simply "grown too far apart," concluded, "It's the end of an era and was not an easy decision to have to make." Here's a look at the behind-the-scenes legal process you don't see on the franchise.
Birkan and Laura
Birkan Kuzoren and Laura Nevenner looked to have got a happy ending when, during the "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" Tell All episode, the latter read a letter from the immigration office confirming they were able to continue with the K-1 visa process. Furthermore, the former, a very keen gambler, revealed that he was now entirely debt free! Unfortunately, things soon appear to have gone south.
In fact, just a day after the episode aired, Birkan disclosed in an Instagram Q&A that he and Laura were no longer an item. "Life changes, world changes, worldview changes," he said cryptically (via Swooon). "Let's just say I have a bigger cause than my desires now." And this cause? Well, it turns out that the Turk had just enrolled to serve his country.
"When we started this relationship, the world wasn't in such a messed-up place, and I thought I could think about the future," Birkan explained in a chat with TikToker CutToTheDrama before the talk turned to his new military career. "But right now, after everything happening, I just thought even if I got the visa, I can't go. No matter how much I criticize the government, this is still my country, and I have no hesitation giving my life for it, like my ancestors did back then. Whatever it takes."
Usman and Lisa
Usman "Sojaboy" Umar and Lisa Hamme may well be responsible for one of the most bitter breakups in the 90 Day Fiancé" franchise. The pair, whose love story was told in the fourth season of "Behind the 90 Days" initially started out well. They even got married in the former's Nigerian homeland. But their walk down the aisle appeared to have been a curse in disguise.
Indeed, soon after, the duo experienced major problems in their relationship, ranging from cultural differences to Lisa's apparent need for control. They divorced in 2021, and it's fair to say that both parties moved on quickly. While Lisa tied the knot with Tracey Robinson, Usman began dating Kim Menzies. Their relationship was documented on several spinoffs, including "Happily Ever After."
And Lisa couldn't resist the opportunity to stick the knife in during her ex's appearance on the latter's Tell All episode. After Kim's son Jamal blasted Usman for the way he treated his mom, she took to Instagram to declare (via People), "Scammer Sodaboy karma is being served to you atm" to the backdrop of Vka$h's "Big Scammer." In another post, Lisa mocked her former husband's musical endeavors, claiming that he relied on AutoTune while also playing Ludacris' "Act A Fool." Here's a look at the most uncomfortable 90 Day Fiancé moments.
Darcey and Tom
Darcey Silva had two bites of the "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" cherry. She first tried to make a go of things with Dutchman Jesse Meester. But when that relationship fizzled out, she began dating Tom Brooks, a British entrepreneur she first met on Facebook several years earlier.
After meeting face to face in Europe, the pair attempted a long-distance relationship. But Darcey's incessant need for communication — apparently she'd regularly call him in the early hours of the morning and bombard him with messages while at work — gave Tom pause for thought. "I feel I can't give this love and time you want. It's just, like, what's the point?," he told her (via Reality TV World). "From my perspective and this juncture in my life, where I see it, I just prefer to be single and your friend."
But Tom appeared to give mixed out mixed messages. Following the taping of the Tell All episode, he claimed he was now open to the possibility of rekindling their romance. However, soon after, Darcey took to Instagram to declare that she was now officially a singleton. "Excited for what the future holds," she wrote. "I'm ready for a sexy and manly Aussie! Let's go down under! Will always keep my heart open to life and real love!"
Magda and Joey
Magda Szlachta and Joe "Joey" Coan may have still been together at the Tell All episode of the seventh "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" season. But it was perhaps clear for all to see that they weren't going to last the distance, if only for the fact that the former still couldn't be bothered to pronounce the latter's name correctly.
Indeed, warning signs continued to pop up throughout their early courtship. Joey's family, for example, believed he was being taken advantage of by someone wanting a green card. But he wasn't exactly innocent himself, having apparently slept with another woman only a few days after they first connected. He also repeatedly lied about his sexual past, resulting in an argument in which Magda famously shouted (via ScreenRant), "You f***ed your friend! You lied to me again."
It was little surprise in early 2025 Magda reportedly confirmed during an Instagram Q&A that she and Joey were no longer an item. In fact, she expressed her boredom at being asked about the subject. Her experience on the show made never appear in the "90 Day Fiancé" shows again. Here's a look at things about the franchise that are totally fake.
Christian and Cleo
Christian and Cleo looked set to last the distance when they turned up for the sixth season of the "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days" Tell All episode arm-in-arm. Even more so when news emerged two months later that the former had popped the question. But sadly, this proved to be the first nail in their relationship's coffin.
In a candid Instagram post, Cleo revealed (via Yahoo! Entertainment) that the prospect of a wedding seemed to disappear the moment that she left the United States. "I was asked to marry him and spend the rest of the rest of my life with him, which was obviously something that made me really, really happy at the time," she explained. "I just thought that that was the natural progression and the engagement was then called into question pretty much as soon as I landed back here into the U.K."
According to Cleo, Christian immediately started to get cold feet, claiming he felt trapped and that the spark they initially felt had dissipated. "Which to me was really shocking because throughout the entire stay, I was there for over a month, it felt just like any other time we spent a month together, if not better," she reasoned. "I felt that we were the healthiest and the most mundane normal couple that we'd ever been."
Trisha and Rick
You could argue that the writing was on the wall for Trisha Stiley Firaisantsoa and Rick Van Vactor IV before they'd even met face to face. Before the latter headed to Madagascar, the former decided to ghost him for approximately seven days. Instead of sulking, however, the ladies' man decided to jump into bed with someone else.
Although he initially kept this encounter secret, Rick eventually came clean during their time on the eighth season of "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days," driving another big wedge between them. And just when it seemed as though Trisha was warming to the idea of forgiveness, she discovered Rick was still contacting his former girlfriend behind their back and kicked him to the curb.
Neither party wasted any time in getting back on the saddle, so to speak. Just a few months after calling time on their relationship, Trisha met an Australian man who she ended up having a baby with. As for Rick, well, he slept with someone else within 24 hours of the split!
