Sketchy Things That Aren't Adding Up About The Kim K Robbery

Talk about terrifying: Kim Kardashian had more drama in one night than in her entire documented life on Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

On the night of Oct. 2, 2016, Kardashian, 35, was robbed at gunpoint in a Paris hotel where she was staying for Fashion Week. A spokesperson told the New York Post, "Kim Kardashian West was held up at gunpoint inside her Paris hotel room this evening...She is badly shaken but physically unharmed."

"She begged for them to let her live and [said] she has babies at home. Then they wrapped her mouth in tape and put her in the bathtub," a source told E! News. "She thought they were for sure going to kill her." When they were gone, Kardashian escaped her bindings and fled. "She's been up all night and she's terrified," a source told Page Six. "This is the worst thing that has ever happened to Kim. She is just thankful that her children were not with her at the time."

Yikes. Here's where it all gets weird.

It was in her home

The Paris hotel where the robbery occurred was actually Kardashian's home in Paris. Page Six reports that Kardashian and husband Kanye West have had an apartment in the exclusive Hotel de Pourtalès for years. An insider claims, "It's their home...[that may be why the robbery] was so planned out...they knew exactly what room [she was in]."

The robbers were dressed like cops

TMZ reports that five intruders entered the hotel and threatened the concierge at gunpoint until he revealed the location of Kardashian's room. Two of the assailants reportedly entered Kardashian's room wearing ski masks and dressed in what appeared to be police uniforms. Authorities tell the Mirror that the perps were likely a gang dressed as police officers, not actual rogue cops. The suspected crew is called the Pink Panther Gang, who've previously used police officer disguises. They're known for "minimal violence," the Mirror notes, as well as quick getaways. Though all the intruders were armed in Kardashian's robbery, no one was actually hurt.

The perps are still at large

Police have questioned a photographer in connection with the incident, the Daily Mail reports. The paparazzo allegedly dressed up as a police officer earlier in the week to gain access to a restaurant where Kardashian was dining with her family. It's unclear whether those events are connected. The robbers reportedly escaped the scene on bicycles.

She had no security at the time

Kardashian's security guard, Pascal Duvier, was not with her at the time of the attack. TMZ reports that Duvier, who tackled "prankster" Vitalii Sediuk earlier this month for attempting to grab Kardashian and kiss her infamous derriere, was out with Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner when the robbery occurred. Duvier and Kim agreed for him to shadow her sisters since she was calling it a night in her own home. Just hours before the robbery occurred, Kim tweeted a photo of Duvier behind her, captioning it, "Always in my shot!"

A source told People that it isn't unusual for security to shift among family members. "It wouldn't be that strange for Pascal to be dispatched to be with Kourtney or the other family members once Kim was 'safely' in her residence," the source said. "And he regularly provides security for the whole family—not just Kim."

Her security is rarely armed

Steve Stanulis, a security specialist who previously worked with Kim and West, told Page Six the family rarely uses armed security guards. "They need to pay for an armed security guard. She almost got killed at gunpoint, because she didn't want to pay for an extra armed and well-trained person. It takes one minute of dialogue to figure out if someone really is a cop, they should not have got in the building," Stanulis said. "Sadly, the only person to blame for this incident is Kim Kardashian. She has tens of millions of dollars of jewelry, but she can't pay for an armed guard to protect her? The fact that five days ago that someone broke through her security chain and tried to grab her, then this happened, shows her security is not strong enough, and this should be a wake-up call."

He added, "Pascal is their main guy, and he's awesome, but he's not armed, he's not a police officer. He is former German military with some serious forces training, he's their head of security and goes everywhere with them. But the truth is he needs backup from an armed guard."

The apartments weren't secure

The Mirror reports that the Hotel de Pourtalès where the robbery took place isn't actually a hotel, but a luxury apartment complex for the uber-rich. The apartment block, as a result of not being an actual hotel, has much less security than, say, your average Quality Inn or Marriott, and the intruders had to only contend with the concierge to get to Kim's room. The concierge was later found bound, gagged, and stuffed into a cupboard near a stairwell, but otherwise unharmed.

A former guest told People, "As I recall, there's a receptionist downstairs who buzzes you through the door in the courtyard and a nightman and that's pretty much all you see of security."

She had a ton of valuables lying around

The perps reportedly made off with between $5.6 million and $6.7 million worth of jewels and a ring worth about $4.5 million. People reports they also took two smartphones, a jewelry box, and Kim's purse, which contained a good amount of cash.

She may have invited trouble

Stanulis told Page Six, "Kim's social media and her Snapchat is her undoing. When she is posting, 'Here I am, and this is the $5 million ring I am wearing, here's where I am going,' you are basically inviting someone to rob you." He added, "When I worked with them, Kanye would ask me to walk 10 feet behind him, which makes it so hard for anyone working their security to do anything if someone lunges at them. There was numerous times he'd try to ditch his security. He'd jump in a car and tell me to take a taxi."

Other sources agreed. One insider told the tab, "Kanye is much more paranoid and vigilant about security, but when Kim's not with him, she's pretty relaxed." The insider added, "She is used to people knowing where she is because of social media, the photographers gather wherever she is. But the truth is it just takes one nut to put her in serious danger. She's going to have to hire a lot more security and be a lot more careful."

An insider confirmed that the family's security team came up short, telling the Daily Mail, "[The Kardashians] had three bodyguards to protect five members of the family staying at two different locations while flaunting their jewelry for everyone to see on the internet. Clearly this wasn't enough."

The Bodyguard Group of Beverly Hills advised Page Six that the Kardashians are notoriously lax with their security despite repeated warnings. "You need to rent the room on the right and a room on the left. Plus men in the hallway and the elevator who will stop people and say, 'May we see your room key please?' Now, they'll meet in the lobby or hallway and that's their pickup and dropoff point and the bodyguards go back home. We've been warning them for years."

It may have been an inside job

Stanulis, who, it should be noted, got fired after West accused him of being a little too fond of Mrs. West, thinks there may be more to the robbery than meets the eye. He told Page Six, "I would say it's either an inside job or publicity stunt. That hotel is so secure, somebody must have tipped them off that she was alone inside, or shown them a way in."

She was being tailed for days leading up to the robbery

"Kim Kardashian was tailed for at least three days before the robbery," a source told the Daily Mail. "We know there was one man who pretended to be a photographer who followed the American celebrity on a motorbike to find out her whereabouts. Another man pretended to be a plainclothes detective to try to get a seat next to her at the exclusive Ferdi restaurant..." The source also told the Daily Mail that the fake detective "bolted" when restaurant staffers asked him for credentials to enter the premises. Why didn't the Hotel de Pourtalès bother doing the same?

Cops also believe it was an inside job

A source told Page Six that Stanulis' hunch that the robbery was an inside job is probably right. "French police suspect that the five alleged robbers had some contact with her security and were tipped off about her procedures," an insider said. "They knew there was no security [with her inside her apartment that night]. All they had to do was go in, make contact with someone inside the hotel. They have issues with stories of more than one worker at the hotel. They are also talking to bodyguards who worked with her earlier in the week." Cops are reportedly particularly interested in the concierge who led the robbers to Kim's flat within the building. "[The staff] did some things that were so unprofessional it seemed like a show," a source said.

TMZ reports that there was only a brief window during which the robbers would have had access to Kim alone, as she'd had friends over shortly before the robbery occurred. Kim's bodyguard, Duvier, is reportedly not a suspect, but there's a long list of other persons of interest who could have tipped off the perps, as quite a few people knew her schedule for Paris Fashion Week and there are multiple units in the hotel, so other patrons could have reported when Kardashian (and her team) was coming and going. Police are examining phone records of "various people in and around the building" in their investigation.

There was no surveillance footage

Possibly more evidence of an inside job? The robbers were somehow able to evade being caught on surveillance cameras. TMZ reports that there was no surveillance video inside or outside the hotel premises. As a result, the only existing video is police surveillance footage, and that's reportedly useless because the only camera doesn't face the front of the building. Cops even checked surveillance cameras from nearby businesses, but reportedly came up empty on all fronts.

Kim's friend was downstairs the whole time

E! News reported that Kim's stylist and BFF, Simone Harouche (pictured here with Kim and Kourtney), was downstairs in the lower level of the starlet's apartment when the robbery occurred, but everything else about Harouche's whereabouts and actions is conflicting depending on which source you believe. "Simone texted [Kim's bodyguard] Pascal Duvier and Kourtney Kardashian. She couldn't dial 911 from her phone," a source told E! News. Kourtney and Duvier were reportedly at a nightclub two miles away; Duvier arrived on the scene just minutes after the culprits left the premises.

People reported that Harouche was roused when Kim screamed over the balcony. "[Simone] was downstairs and called Pascal not knowing what was going on asking if everything was OK."

Us Weekly reports something different, saying Harouche was sleeping downstairs when the robbery occurred, noting that Kim made frantic phone calls to Kourtney and Duvier, with no mention of texts from Harouche to either party. "She did not know anything had happened to Kim yet," a source said. "[Kim's] phone call to Kourtney was the one that triggered everyone rushing to Kim's side."

Kim is a Houdini-level escape artist

Kim was able to escape using dexterity and silence. "[Kim] was tied up, and gagged with duct tape wrapped around her head. They put plastic ties around her wrists but she managed to squeeze her hands out of the wrist ties by wriggling her hands," a source told People. "She was hysterical but not screaming as she knew she had to keep quiet to survive. The reports of her fear of being raped are real. She really did think she was going to be raped. She had a gun to her head the whole time." After escaping, Kardashian "screamed from the balcony."
