Beyonce Is Gifting HBCU Students Membership To This Club
Beyoncé is catering to her Black audience by gifting students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities a free membership to a fitness club. The Lemonade artist has been highlighting Black culture within her music for years, especially with the release of Lemonade in 2016. The visual album included images of Black women and cameos from numerous Black, female celebs, including Serena Williams, Zendaya and Winnie Harlow. Earlier that same year, the singer performed at the Super Bowl and paid homage to the Black Panther Party, per CNN.
In 2018, after the Lemonade era, Beyoncé was the first Black woman to headline Coachella, an appearance which has since been dubbed Beychella. The performance was entirely based on HBCU homecoming band culture and majorettes, and was followed by a Netflix documentary appropriately titled Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé. Since then, Beyoncé has been adamant about hiring Black creatives and celebrated Black culture with her 2020 visual album Black Is King.
Outside of her music, Beyoncé created an HBCU scholarship program in 2018, per Elle, and in November 2020, she announced that she was giving students from a select group of HBCUs a free fitness membership as part of her partnership with Peloton.
Beyoncé is curating fitness classes
In partnership with the virtual fitness platform Peloton, Beyoncé is paying for students at 10 HBCUs to workout with the app on a two-year digital membership, according to Good Morning America. "Peloton and I both believe that the power of music can help uplift, motivate and inspire those on their fitness journeys," Queen Bey said in a statement (via GMA). She also shared that she's been using the app herself for several years. "I'm proud to celebrate the students at HBCUs with this donation, to encourage them to find and embrace their own wellness regimens."
For fans who didn't go to an HBCU, don't fret! The "Halo" star's partnership means more Beyoncé themed workouts are heading your way. According to Peloton, with Beyoncé being the most requested artist on their app, they're partnering with the superstar to curate classes "across all workout disciplines, touching on areas of importance to her, including music, movement, fitness and wellness."
