Over 25% Of People Think Tom Cruise Should Have Ended Up With This Ex

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV — professionally known as Tom Cruise — has a star-studded dating history. Outside of his numerous, award-winning films, the movie star has been one to watch when it comes to his romantic interests.

According to Hollywood Life, the Mission Impossible actor began publicly dating actress Melissa Gilbert during the early '80s. Per an interview with Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the Little House on the Prairie star said, "Actually, when I dated him, he was Tom Mapother still. It was when he first moved to Los Angeles and I think I was 16, maybe, or 17?" She later dished, "I did not have sex with him. We made out, but, honestly, there was no sex. He was a good kisser. But, you know, he was, like, a struggling, starving actor. I actually bought him his first set of dishes."

Cruise then moved on with Rebecca de Mornay, whom he dated for two years after the two co-starred in 1983's Risky Business, and later, his high-profile relationship with Cher. Cruise also dated and married Mimi Rogers — who notoriously introduced him to Scientology — in the late '80s. However, once their divorce was finalized, Cruise married twice more, once to actress Nicole Kidman, with whom he shares two children, and then to actress Katie Holmes — with whom he shares his third child. But, out all his famous exes, Cruise's fans with the actor would have ended up with one of his former flames in particular. And honestly, it makes perfect sense.

Fans loved Tom Cruise with his 'Vanilla Sky' co-star

According to a Nicki Swift poll of 607 people, 25.21% believe Tom Cruise should have ended up with his ex-girlfriend Penelope Cruz. Nicole Kidman came in second with 21.75% of the votes, while Cruise's other ex-wives, Katie Homes (19.93%) and Mimi Rogers (16.4 percent) each garnered less than 20% of the votes.

Cruise and Cruz, of course, met on the set of the 2001 film Vanilla Sky. At the time of production, Cruise was married to Nicole Kidman, but that ended shortly after meeting Cruz. According to Entertainment Weekly, the Top Gun actor filed for divorce from Kidman in February 2001 and went public with Cruz on the red carpet of Captain Corelli's Mandolin in August of that year — the same month the divorce was finalized

Although the relationship ended three years later, in January 2004, the pair was one of the most attractive couples in Hollywood. A source told People at the time, "The relationship just ran its course and they decided not to be girlfriend and boyfriend anymore. Through most of the relationship they were both shooting movies in separate parts of the world."

Many suspect Cruise's ties to Scientology played a part, however, a spokesperson for Cruz denied those claims. And, while it seems as though it is surely over for the former lovers — Cruz went on to marry fellow actor Javier Bardem, after all — it is nice to know there are people out there who are still rooting for them.
