Lindsey Vonn And P.K. Subban Just Announced Some Bad News

Lindsey Vonn and P.K. Subban's love story melted so many people's hearts when it seemed like the athletes found their match in one another. The couple, per the New York Post, were first linked in early 2018 and immediately hit it off, with Vonn telling Access Live in 2019 that Subban was "definitely the one." Even his proposal was meant to be, according to the Canadian hockey player, who popped the question in August 2019. "I got the ring and said 'You know what? I'm just going to do it home.' Everything kind of came together on that day. Everyone says the stars aligned — well, it was actually a full moon," Subban told Vogue. "I was worried because I knew she would want to be dressed up and not in her pajamas, and it just so happened she had a business meeting, so she was fully dressed up."

To make things more romantic, Vonn proposed to Subban a few months later. "I was like, 'Well, I have an engagement ring but you don't, so not everybody knows we're engaged.' And I think it should be like, really equal," she told Entertainment Tonight in December 2019. Though it seemed like their love was eternal, Vonn and Subban made a sad announcement in December 2020. The couple broke off their engagement after nearly three years together

Lindsey Vonn and P.K. Subban decided to end their relationship more than a year after announcing their engagement. On Dec. 29, the pair took to their respective Instagram accounts to announce the sad news. The New Jersey Devils player wrote, "Lindsey is one of the most kind and caring people I know. I will always treasure our time as a couple together and the many laughs we shared." He added, "After much consideration, we have decided to move forward separately. We will always remain friends and love each other immensely. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time."

In her own breakup announcement, the retired athlete — who won an Olympic gold medal in 2010 — shared the same selfie and echoed the same sentiments as her ex-fiancé. Vonn wrote, "Over the past 3 years PK and I have had some incredible times together. He is a kind, good man, and someone I respect a great deal." Before announcing the split, Vonn shared some of her desires and expectations going into 2021.

Lindsey Vonn spoke of a 'clean slate' before P.K. Subban split

Just two weeks before announcing her split from P.K. Subban, Linday Vonn opened up about having a "clean slate" as she heads into 2021. She spoke of the coronavirus pandemic and what she's looking forward to in the new year. The former Olympic skier told People in December 2020, "I just want to break free from it, and I feel like I'm so optimistic and so looking forward to a new year." Vonn added, "As long as people are healthy and we can get this vaccine going, and everyone can get back to work and be healthy, that's what I'm hopeful for and that makes me really excited. So here's to 2021."

At the time, she also discussed her and Subban's relationship and how they were able to spend a lot more time together during the quarantine. "I definitely checked a lot of boxes during COVID that I normally wouldn't have been able to do or have that much time to do, but also I've been focused a lot on my fitness," she explained. "I was happy that P.K. and I are able to work out together most of the time, and obviously we had the dogs with us, which always makes me happy." Vonn added, "So I think all things considered, we made the most out of our time together."

They were also planning a Summer 2020 wedding before COVID-19 happened. Here's what we know about that.

Lindsey Vonn and P.K. Subban had been planning to wed in Summer 2020

Following Lindsey Vonn and P.K. Subban's engagement in 2019, the retired Olympic skier told Vogue that she and her fiancé weren't in a rush to the altar. She explained, "I just want to enjoy the moment and the engagement. We're not in a big hurry to get married. It kind of depends on his playing schedule, and when we have time to sit down and go through it. I don't want to stress him out because he has a big season coming." According to Us Weekly, the couple was looking to get married in Summer 2020, but the wedding was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"His family is in Canada, so I can't even travel there," Vonn told Entertainment Tonight in early December 2020, referencing the pandemic. "My family is kind of scattered all over the U.S. My sister lives in Italy with her husband, so getting everyone together at this point is next to impossible." The athlete added, "I don't know what to plan. We don't know anything. Ideally, a perfect wedding would just be all my friends and family and less of a ceremony and more of a party."

Unfortunately, they never got around to announcing their new wedding date. We at Nicki Swift wish them all the best going forward.
