The Untold Truth Of Maria Menounos' Husband Keven Undergaro
Maria Menounos has made a name for herself as a journalist and host of many TV shows, including Extra and E! News. She has also been through a lot personally. In 2017, she departed E! News after having surgery to remove a brain tumor, according to the Los Angeles Times. Menounos told Brain & Life that her mother Litsa also had one nearly a year earlier, in 2016. In December 2020, Menounos' parents were hospitalized with COVID-19, according to People.
But now that Menounos' life has calmed down, the 42-year-old journalist and podcast host is preparing to start a family with her husband, Keven Undergaro. She first dropped the news on the Jan. 5, 2021 episode of her show, Better Together, leading many news outlets, like People, to wonder if she was already pregnant. On Jan. 7, 2021, Menounos clarified to People that she and Undergaro are not expecting yet, but they hope to be soon. She told the publication, "That's the plan, and we will share good news when we can."
And it sounds like Undergaro has been a supportive partner throughout it all. Read on to learn more about the main man in Menounos' life.
Keven Undergaro was homeless when he met Maria Menounos
Today, Keven Undergaro is a success who created Afterbuzz TV, but he struggled during his early days in the entertainment industry. According to his website biography, Undergaro wrote for the '90s MTV game show Singled Out, which starred Chris Hardwick, Jenny McCarthy, and Carmen Electra. Soon, he worked his way up to head writer. When the show wasn't in production, Undergaro worked as a carnie at carnivals to make ends meet.
Riding the wave of his MTV success, Undergaro made an independent film, where he met 19-year-old Maria Menounos. But unfortunately, the expensive endeavor left him bankrupt and homeless. All the couple had was each other — and they made it work. His website biography revealed Menounos' positive influence on him. At one point, he was a heavy drinker and partier, but once Undergaro started seeing Menounos, he "cut various life toxins and distractions" out of his life and dedicated himself to being serious about his and Menounos' careers.
Menounos' Greek family, however, was slow to accept Undergaro, an Italian American, into their fold.
Maria Menounos' parents didn't approve of Keven Undergaro at first
In 2014, Keven Undergaro told AOL that the early days of his relationship with Maria Menounos was a lot like "Romeo and Juliet without ending in full tragedy." Menounos' father was dismayed that Undergaro was not Greek like Menounos and her family. They disowned her for some time and stopped paying for her education at Emerson College in Boston, according to AOL. "I was now pretty much homeless, no education, no degree, but I had Keven," Menounos told the website.
Together, Undergaro and Menounos chased their dreams while living in a basement apartment in Boston. They both enjoyed Howard Stern's radio show, according to Undergaro's website bio and AOL. It inspired Undergaro to produce Menounos' first résumé tape, which the couple subsequently submitted to a local news station. Before long, Menounos found success in broadcast journalism and her family came to appreciate Undergaro, eventually approving of the relationship.
"My dad apologized to Keven which I think is such a sign of, I don't know. I don't know a lot of men that can actually say they're sorry," she told AOL. "It's so hard to give the whole story but it was really tragic and really, really hard."
Undergaro and Menounos' relationship endured through the years. In March 2016, they got engaged — where else? — on The Howard Stern Show and got married on Dec. 31, 2017 during FOX's live New Year's Eve special. The wedding was officiated by none other than Steve Harvey. And, in 2021, Undergaro and Menounos are ready to take on a new challenge together: having children.
