What Cherie Johnson From Punky Brewster Is Doing Today
Hail! Hail! The gang's all here! As reported by Deadline, Peacock is set to bring the original cast of the 1980s sitcom Punky Brewster back together for a reboot — one that focuses on an adult Punky navigating life as a single mother of three. And while that definitely includes the star of the show, Penelope "Punky" Brewster played by actor Soleil Moon Frye, we would be remiss not to mention that Punky's best pal and partner in crime, the lovable Cherie played by Cherie Johnson, will also be joining the "continuation" as well.
During an interview with E! News, the former co-stars sat down to reminisce on their glory days together. "I loved you from the moment I met you," Frye gushed about Johnson. "I remember seeing you, we were auditioning for Punky and we were just like magnets drawn towards each other," she added.
Johnson echoed those same sentiments, stating that she and Frye became fast friends on set and even confided in one another about boys. But what exactly has Johnson been up to since Punky Brewster wrapped in 1988? Keep reading after the jump to find out!
Cherie Johnson went to star in many other projects after 'Punky Brewster'
While starring in the legendary Punky Brewster sitcom definitely has its bragging rights, that certainly was not the end of actor Cherie Johnson's career.
As reported by Celebrity Net Worth, Johnson went on to star in the popular television sitcom Family Matters, where she portrayed the role of Laura Winslow's best friend, Maxine Johnson. After that, she forayed into script writing and even went on to write two novels. According to IMDb, Johnson also starred in several films including Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Nobody Smiling, and Guardian of Eden.
And now with the reboot in the works, Johnson is sharpening her acting skills yet again as she will be portraying a queer adult woman this time around, per TooFab. While the premise of the show is about actor Soleil Moon Frye's character adjusting to life as a single mother, Punky still desperately needs the help of her lifetime bestie, Cherie.
"[Soleil Moon Frye] wanted to call and tell me what they wanted to pitch me, but they didn't want her to have to make that phone call because they didn't know how my reaction was going to be, but I was thrilled," she explained about the creators decision to make adult Cherie a lesbian in the reboot. "And I think I was more excited than they expected because for me representation definitely matters," she added.
Mark your calendars! Peacock's all-new episodes of Punky Brewster are set to premiere on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, per E! News!
