Beloved comedian Bill Hader had a pretty quiet love life ahead of 2020. And then he started dating The O.C. alum Rachel Bilson, leaving fans everywhere shook. Bilson and Hader's red carpet debut at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards turned heads and even led viewers to wonder where they met. Well, it turns out Hader and Bilson actually played lovers onscreen...in a film written and directed by Hader's now ex-wife Maggie Carey.

Hader and Bilson reportedly first met on Carey's 2013 film The To Do List. Hader joked to Newsday at the time that it was "nice" of Carey to write a love scene between himself and Bilson, but they never kissed on set. After a rumored year-long romance, Bilson and Hader called it quits in July 2020 but still remain friendly. Who knew a surprise celebrity couple could be so endearing!

Bill Hader and Maggie Carey seemed like a match made in heaven. Per Peoplethe two rising stars first met in Los Angeles through mutual college friends before relocating to New York City after Hader was cast on Saturday Night Live in 2005The couple have three daughters together, which in part prompted Hader to leave the sketch show."When I was on SNL, I was a bit of a basket case. It could not have been easy on my wife at the time," Hader told Variety in 2019. "It was hard with one kid, let alone [three] because I was just never around." 

Hader filed for divorce in 2017 after being married to Carey for 11 years. Per The Blastthe Barry creator cited irreconcilable differences, and the split was finalized in 2019. Hader told Variety that he is "still friends" with Carey post-breakup. Carey herself has made some changes in her career after parting ways with Hader. Carey is known for directing episodes of Silicon Valley, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Mr. Mayor (via IMDb), and in 2019, inked a deal with ABC Studios to create new content for Disney+, ABC, and Hulu. "Maggie is an incredible talent who has directed some of the funniest, most memorable episodes of our favorite comedies," ABC Studios President Jonnie Davis said, as reported by Deadline
