Everything We Know About Prince Philip's Death

The royal family is mourning the loss of Prince Philip, who died on April 9, 2021, at the age of 99. The queen's husband of 73 years was admitted to a private hospital on Feb. 16, 2021, per the BBC. Buckingham Palace said at the time that he was taken "as a precaution," via BBC. The Duke of Edinburgh was then moved to a different hospital which specialized in heart issues on March 1, 2021, which was a worrying sign of his condition. Philip was treated for an "infection," per The Telegraph

The bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aired while Philip underwent tests for a pre-existing heart condition, which critics were not shy to point out. On March 16, 2021, Philip was released from the hospital and returned to Windsor Castle in Berkshire, where he was staying with the queen prior to his hospitalization.

While it appeared that Prince Philip, the longest-serving consort of any British monarch, was on the mend, things took a turn for the worst. Read on to find out what Buckingham Palace had to say about Philip's death.

Prince Philip died 'peacefully' at home

Prince Philip died "peacefully" at Windsor Castle, per the royal family's official statement, where he had been staying with the queen. No cause of death has been immediately revealed.

Other key figures in the U.K. expressed their condolences. Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke from Downing Street. "Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth and around the world," Johnson said somberly. "And it is to Her Majesty, and her family, that our nation's thoughts must turn today. Because they have lost not just a much-loved and highly respected public figure, but a devoted husband and a proud and loving father, grandfather and, in recent years, great-grandfather," he added.

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan tweeted, "Today, we mourn the loss of an extraordinary man, who devoted his life to public service and helping others. I extend my deepest sympathies to Her Majesty The Queen and the entire Royal Family at this sad time." Tributes from celebrities also poured in.
