The Real Meaning Behind 'Heartbreak Anniversary' By Giveon

Giveon may be R&B's hottest artist out, but the road to mainstream took some time. In 2018, the California native debuted his singles, "Garden Kisses" and "Fields." His unique voice captured the attention of producer Sevn Thomas, who he would later work with. After releasing music quietly for a few years, the singer was thrust into the mainstream scene after laying memorable vocals on the hook of Drake's "Chicago Freestyle." Per Okayplayer, the "Like I Want You" singer was invited to be part of Snoh Aalegra's 2019 headlining tour.

In 2020, Giveon left a remarkable first impression on listeners with the release of his debut EP Take Time. With his signature baritone and captivating lyrics over slow beats, the California native sang his way into our hearts and our playlists. In October 2020, the R&B sensation followed up with When It's All Said And Done. Millions of streams later, the Grammy-nominated artist expressed his gratitude to his fans by releasing a joint version of his two EPs, titled When It's All Said And Done...Take Time. Additionally, he dropped a visual for his hit single, "Heartbreak Anniversary." Read on to find out the real meaning behind "Heartbreak Anniversary."

Giveon reminisces on the anniversary of splitting from his ex

Breaking up is already hard enough to do, but remembering the anniversary of your split is a different type of pain. Giveon explores his feelings on the one-year anniversary of his breakup in "Heartbreak Anniversary." The song clearly resonated with many, as it was certified platinum by the RIAA in April 2020.

On the track, Giveon recalls the details of the day he got his heart broken. "Balloons are deflated, guess they look lifeless like me/ We miss you on your side of the bed, mmm/ Still got your things here and they stare at me like souvenirs/ Don't wanna let you out my head," He sings. "Just like the day that I met you, the day I thought forever/ Said that you love me, but that'll last for never/ It's cold outside like when you walked out my life/ Why you walk out my life?"

In an interview with Genius, Giveon explained the inspiration behind his track. "What would that anniversary look like if all the things you bought — like chocolates [and] flowers — if it's just been sitting there for a year collecting dust in a corner," He said. "Every time this [day] comes around, I feel a little sting." Clearly, the singer was going through it at the time he wrote this track. However, given his rumoredrelationship with Justine Skye, it seems Giveon is changing his tune.
