Inside Camila Mendes And Charles Melton's Relationship

Plenty of A-list relationships have started when two stars worked together on a project. After Camila Mendes and Charles Melton met on the "Riverdale" set, sparks flew for their onscreen characters as well as for the real-life stars. The couple started dating in August 2018, per Seventeen, but they broke up in late 2019, not long after celebrating a year together, per E! News. However, there's hope for Charmila fans yet: E! News reported on June 9, 2021, that the couple had reunited.

"The break was nice for them and they reconnected on set of Riverdale," an unnamed source told E! News. "Being around all of their mutual friends and hanging out together often made them realize they still have a strong connection and chemistry."

The source added that the couple's newly rekindled relationship is "going well, and they aren't putting too much stress on the relationship." What's old is new again! Here's what happened when the couple started dating the first time around.

Camila Mendes and Charles Melton had a whirlwind romance

There isn't much evidence of Charles Melton and Camila Mendes' first go at their relationship that's still on her Instagram page, but the photo that started fan speculation about them dating is still there. Mendes shared a photo of the "Riverdale" cast celebrating Labor Day weekend on a boat, and she and Melton look pretty cozy in the shot. And when the couple confirmed their relationship, their "Riverdale" co-stars were quick to congratulate them, via Comments by Celebs.

During their whirlwind year together, Mendes and Melton spent Thanksgiving with Mendes' family and traveled to South Korea together, per Seventeen. And in May 2019, Mendes called Melton a "hopeless romantic" in an interview with ET Online.

Ironically, Mendes told Nylon in July 2018 that she was skeptical about dating fellow actors. "Dating people in the industry is tough," she said at the time. "You only meet people through work and that can be really tough, because you're not necessarily meeting people that you're similar to. It's just people that you're with because you're working on the same project." It looks like Melton was the exception to her rule!

Camila Mendes clapped back at a critic of her relationship with Charles Melton

When it comes to celebrities, fans are always going to "ship" the couples they want to be together, both on-screen and IRL. But when one "Riverdale" fan suggested that Camila Mendes was happier with an ex than she was with Charles Melton, she didn't let the comment slide.

The Instagram post in question has been deleted, but a screenshot of it, along with Mendes' response, is preserved on Twitter. The fan account posted a photo of Mendes and Melton alongside an image of Mendes with her ex Victor Houston, suggesting that the actor "looked happier" with Houston.

"I feel silly responding to this, but I also feel the impulse to tell you that you're wrong. I'm happier than I've ever been in my life," Mendes commented on the now-deleted Instagram post, via BuzzFeed. She added that she knew she was being photographed in the shot with her ex, which is why she was smiling in the image. Mendes didn't owe anyone an explanation of her relationship, but her comment was a powerful reminder that you never know what's going on in someone else's life.

Charles Melton's reported fat-shaming tweets didn't sit well with Camila Mendes

Plenty of stars have had their old tweets resurface when they become famous, and "The Sun Is Also a Star" actor Charles Melton was no exception. One of the reported tweets from 2012 read, "I find it hilarious when fat people say they need to start eating right. When they have already mastered the art of chewing and swallowing," per ET Online.

Melton apologized for the tweets in 2018, saying there was "no excuse for that behavior." "I'm striving to do better and will use this experience to grow, helping others to understand how these types of statements are completely unacceptable," the actor said in a statement, via ET Online.

In addition to his public apology, Melton personally apologized to his "Riverdale" co-star Camila Mendes. The pair weren't dating at the time, but Mendes has been open about her past with disordered eating, per Page Six. Mendes said to Access that she knew her co-star wasn't "a bad person" and that he was "devastated" about the situation.
