Who Is Ross Mathews' Husband, Dr. Wellinthon Garcia?
If you love pop culture commentary — and "RuPaul's Drag Race" — then you definitely know who Ross Mathews is.
Mathews might be all over TV dishing on the latest entertainment news, but he's now making headlines for a different reason. Mathews got engaged to Dr. Wellinthon Garcia in February 2021 after dating for one year, according to ET, and he couldn't be more thrilled to discuss their love story. "We have been so happy for over a year now, as we've been getting to know each other and falling in love. It was scary letting the world know. But now, everyone's just been so amazingly kind and happy for us," Mathews told the outlet.
The pair met in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico while ringing in the 2020 New Year on holiday right before the coronavirus pandemic, and they turned to Zoom dates when the world was on lockdown. "It was a very pandemic love story ... We would just catch up. And it seems it would be impersonal, but it really forced us to have deep conversations and really get to know each other," Mathews said. Dr. Garcia felt the same way, saying, "Absolutely, we really got to know each other. We had a series of questions that we would write down just so we could get to know each other ... It was beautiful." Aw!
Mathews seems head over heels, but have you wondered who Dr. Garcia really is? Keep reading for more details.
Dr. Wellinthon Garcia is an educator
Dr. Wellinthon Garcia seems to keep a low profile, but Ross Mathews told Drew Barrymore on a February episode of her show that his then-fiance is a Hofstra University graduate and curriculum director at the Elmont School District in Long Island.
Dr. Garcia is quite accomplished and received his Doctorate of Education in Educational and Policy Leadership in 2017, per Hofstra's website. Since then, he's been committed to providing the students in his district with meaningful experiences, like a partnership with Junior Achievement of New York to explore career paths. When he's not overseeing curriculum, it appears he makes frequent visits to the West Coast to spend time with Mathews and bask in the Palm Springs sunshine.
Dr. Garcia might not be as vocal as Mathews, but he's just as smitten. "What I love about Ross is that he genuinely adores me to my fullest, my quirkiness, just my mannerisms, he enjoys everything about me," he told ET in March. "That for me is just the unconditional love that I wanna give back to him every day. He's just as hilarious as he is on TV, he's just as sweet to everyone and anyone, there, I have yet to meet someone who says they don't like him. And if they do, I would have a problem with it, but he's my heart and my soul, honestly. So I'm very blessed."
Ross Mathews planned a special surprise proposal
Once the well-kept secret of Ross Mathews and Dr. Wellinthon Garcia's relationship was revealed to the world via social media, the two were quick to discuss the details of their engagement. Mathews told ET he was ready to take the next step and sneakily put together what appeared to be a big Zoom party with friends. Garcia was definitely thrown for a loop when realizing the party list included members of his family and co-workers. Things finally clicked when Mathews said, "It all started with a rooftop pool and a burrito" — a reference to when they first met.
"When I got down on one knee, he walked out of the room and I started laughing," Mathews explained about the big moment. "I said 'Babe you have to be here for this part.'" Once Garcia came back into the room and Mathews officially popped the question, he responded with, "of course."
The two have since opened up to fans through social media detailing their adventures and milestone moments together. Early 2022 marked getting a new house on the East Coast, but despite celebrating all the newness and what is to come, they still look fondly at where it all began with some throwbacks. A picture of the day they met in Puerto Vallarta was shared to Instagram and Mathews couldn't help but gush: "I'm grateful every day that I met this extraordinary human who challenges me and supports me at the same time."
Mathews believes his late mom would love his husband
For such a special moment in Ross Mathews' life, the absence of his mother was notable when planning his wedding with Dr. Wellinthon Garcia. His mother died from breast cancer in 2020, per TODAY, triggering a significant focus on his physical health as well as continuing a positive outlook. "It's just so hard without my mom. I think about her and how happy she'd be to see this, us together, and how she'd love you," he told Garcia in an interview with ET, noting the two never had a chance to meet. "I did show her a picture of him before she passed away. And she said, 'I think I know him.' And I think she does."
Garcia did get to spend time with another special lady in his partner's life, however. In November 2021, he shared a heartwarming photo on Instagram of the couple smiling with Mathew's grandmother. Garcia noted that meeting the 95-year-old was "an honor" and celebrated her in the caption. "God bless and wishing her many more," he said.
Family is clearly a huge piece of the wedding journey for the couple. Mathews kept up his cleverly sweet ways by inviting his brother Eric to "The Drew Barrymore Show" for Siblings Day. As the hosts chatted through topics, Mathews surprised his brother in the front row by asking him to be his best man. The collective "aww" and cheering from the audience was delightful and the two shared a big hug.
