Why Cher Can't Stand Madonna

There's nothing like a Hollywood feud to keep us on the edge of our seats. Tinseltown is beset with celebrities who harbor so much disdain towards one another that they don't mind letting the rest of the world in on their squabble. It's especially interesting when it's our favorite musicians beefing, particularly when it's two musicians who can both make a solid claim to rule the industry.

While celebrities tend to kiss and make up eventually, there are also some who drag their feud for so long that it spans years — or even decades. Take Kanye West and Taylor Swift's feud, for example. Just when we thought they had reconciled in 2015 after the awkward stage incident in 2009, their beef took a turn for the worst months later and still drags on today.

It's not so different with Cher and Madonna, two pop queens that have a longstanding feud, although it appears that it's a bit more one-sided. Over the years, Cher has been vocal about her contempt for Madonna, slamming the "Like A Prayer" singer publicly. Read on to find out all the details.

Cher's beef with Madonna dates back to the '90s

Cher's feud with Madonna goes far back to the 1990s. The so-called Goddess of Pop, who also happens to be the Queen of Shade, first made her disdain towards the singer public during an interview with Steve Kmetko in 1991. "There's something about her that I don't like. She's mean, and I don't like that... It seems to me that she's got so much that she doesn't have to act the way that she acts, like a spoiled brat all the time," Cher said, per Entertainment Tonight. Cher was friends with Sean Penn during his marriage to Madonna and had hosted the couple at her home from time to time. "It seems to me that when you've reached the kind of acclaim that she's reached, and can do whatever you want to do, you should be a little more magnanimous and be a little less of a c**t."

The "Believe" singer doubled down on this statement in the same year when she spoke with the late Sir Terry Wogan in an interview with the BBC. "She's unbelievably creative," Cher said. "Because in my day, I was pretty good at doing the same thing that she's doing, but she does it so much better. She's unbelievably creative because she's not unbelievably talented, she's not beautiful, but she's kind of — she's rude."

Cher says she respects Madonna

Over the years since then, Cher would occasionally publicly roast Madonna. In 2012, when Madonna released her album "MDNA," Cher famously tweeted: "Wtf is mdna." When fans told her what it was, she was quick to backtrack, saying, "Didnt mean throw shade on Madge! shesBest at a what She Does! Called her Bad word once! Not nice! Ok didnt know Mdna shoot me i liv in cave."

There was also one time where she threw shade at Madonna in an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." When asked which three stars she would want to have a duet with, the singer said: "Adele, Pink and not Madonna!"

But no matter how much she dislikes the star, Cher said that she never hated Madonna. In her Reddit AMA in 2013, when one user asked the question, "Do you still hate madonna?" she clarified that she actually has so much respect for the star. "Madge, no. Actually I don't. I never hated her, I just thought she was a b***h. Actually I quite respect her," Cher wrote. "Actually I think Madge might be one of the most amazing artists I've known. I don't like everything she does, for sure, but she is always riding the crest of the wave. She always saw trends WAY before anyone else, and had great videos."

So we guess that settles it. All is fair in love and in pop.
