Katy Perry Slammed For Racially Insensitive Obama Remark
Katy Perry is under fire for putting her foot in her mouth in a big way.
In a livestream on April 28, 2017, Perry, 32, responded to fan comments. The "Roar" singer replied to a seemingly innocuous comment about her new blonde buzz-cut with a really ill-thought-out response.
"Oh, someone says, 'I miss your old black hair,'" she read. She answered, "Oh, really? Do you miss Barack Obama as well? Oh, OK. Times change, bye. See you guys later."
The reply didn't sit well with fans and foes alike. One Twitter user wrote, "Not Katy Perry pretending to be a woke activist then making an insensitive joke comparing her hair to Obama." Another less angry but still concerned commenter wrote, "I think she shouldn't have mentioned Obama because it makes it seem like she linking BLACK hair to Barack cuz he black," and one slammed the singer, writing, "Dear #BlackTwitter EXHIBIT A. @katyperry – f**k does your stringy a** black dry a** hair have to do with @BarackObama asking for a culture?"
This is just the latest misstep for Perry, who incurred some backlash just a week prior for collaborating with rap group Migos on her track "Bon Appetit." While their verses weren't the issue, Perry's involvement with them was. Just a month before the song was released, Perry took home the National Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign for her her work with the LGBTQ community—so it came as a surprise when she then collaborated with Migos member Quavo, who had previously slammed rapper Makonnen for coming out of the closet. To make matters worse, Quavo said of homosexuality in general, "The world is not right." Understandably, fans gave Perry's choice of collaborators a slew of side-eye.
Perry's lead single from her upcoming fourth album, "Chained To The Rhythm," peaked at No. 4 in its debut week and has fallen every week since, making it her poorest-performing lead single ever. Still, it's important to note that for anyone else, those numbers aren't bad at all ... but somewhere, Taylor Swift is probably rubbing her hands together and snickering (and Britney Spears may be relishing in Perry's previous "head shaving" mockery).
