Return To Amish: The Truth About Jeremiah Raber's Trouble With The Law

"Breaking Amish" first premiered on TLC in 2012 and followed five young Anabaptist adults as they moved to New York City for a new life experience. In 2014, the spinoff show, "Return to Amish," aired on the same network and followed the "Breaking Amish" stars as they made their way back to their hometowns to reintegrate into the culture. The Season 1 cast of "Breaking Amish" included Jeremiah Raber, who grew up in Holmes County, Ohio.

Over the past nine years, Jeremiah has made headlines on countless occasions for his candid presence on social media. He has also made the news for his rocky relationships — he was married to his first wife, Naomi Stutzman, from 2005 to 2011, and wed his second wife, Carmela Raber, in 2016. In 2017, an incident between he and Carmela landed him in handcuffs and tarnished his relationship with the law. What happened and what price did Jeremiah have to pay? Let's investigate the reason for the reality star's arrest.

Jeremiah Raber was arrested for assaulting his wife

In 2017, Jeremiah Raber was arrested for assaulting his wife, Carmela Raber, according to Radar Online. The outlet reported that Carmela said Jeremiah had made "several threats to cause her harm." Carmela reportedly showed police "several large bruises on her legs and arms." She added that she had been hit by her husband with a "closed fist." In a statement to Radar, Jeremiah said, "As of now I have nothing really to say other then the real truth will come out in the end. This is not a one-way street," he noted. "It goes both ways and I have the evidence to prove it and it will be released soon enough."

In August of that year, Jeremiah posted a video to Instagram saying, "As of today, a half hour ago, I am single as f***! I told her to get the f*** out of the house. We're going through a divorce. I'm proud to say I stood up and kicked her out," per Radar Online. He continued, "As far as this s*** where me laying my hands on her...I was wrong for doing some of it... some of it was not true. I have pictures. I have video of her hitting me. I have pictures of her destroying the house that I never put out."

Toward the end of the video, Jeremiah accused his wife of "overspending." He cited an incident in which he lent her $1,000 to drive from Washington to Florida with her child.

Jeremiah Raber and Carmela Mendez are going strong today

Carmela Raber and Jeremiah Raber met on social media, according to In Touch. They messaged one another on Facebook for three months, and then decided to step out from behind the screen and meet in person. They ultimately tied the knot in 2016.

Despite the fact that Jeremiah said he and Carmela were going to get a divorce following the domestic violence incident, the couple is still together today. According to The List, after the event, Jeremiah traveled to Washington State, where Carmela was staying at the time, to work on their relationship. The couple even began marriage counseling. In a YouTube video titled "Brand New Start," Jeremiah said, "I'm also working on bettering myself ... making me a better person because I need to change for the better," he explained. "I'm doing what I have to better myself so that I can be a better man, a better father, and a better husband."

Today, they live in Florida without incident.
