The Sad Reason Brandy's Daughter Thought Her Mom Was Embarrassed Of Her

Brandy has been a household name for decades. The Mississippi native rose to fame in the 1990s, and has since sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, according to Universal Attractions. These days, the singer and actor is busy acting out her "dream role" in the TV show "Queens," as she told The New York Times. Brandy is also a mother to daughter Sy'Rai Smith.

Smith, 19, has not only been compared to her mother on countless occasions, but she has become an advocate for those with different body types. When she spoke on "The Real" in November 2021, Smith discussed being compared to her mother. "Seeing my mom dress a certain way or wear certain things when she was on carpet or when I see her on set, it was kind of difficult," Smith shared, "because it was like, 'Why am I not that way? Why am I not that size? Why was I made the way I was made?" Smith then explained it wasn't until recently that she "changed her mindset" and decided to take her health into her own hands.

Sy'Rai Smith says she worried her mother was embarrassed by her body

In her interview on The Real, Brandy's daughter, Sy'Rai Smith, revealed that she once believed her mom was "embarrassed" by her before Smith changed her habits and lost weight. Smith made sure to tell viewers, however, that it was "just the insecurities in my head" that made her feel this way. "[Brandy] was never like that," Smith explained. "She always was supportive. She always knew that I was beautiful, and she supported me whether I wanted to lose a lot of weight or not."

Smith is the singer's only daughter. In July 2021, she showed off her significant weight loss in a TikTok video captioned, "IM BACK...." As Smith explained on The Real, she experienced numerous health issues before losing weight. She said that she subsequently changed her "mindset, mentality" and gave herself a purpose. "I had so many issues with my health and I just knew living my purpose — I wouldn't be able to live in that body if I wanted to fulfill anything going forward in my life."

After the interview aired, Brandy took to Instagram to post a tribute to her daughter. She commented on her daughter's "amazing spirit," and commended her bravery in sharing her truth with the public. "So brave to walk in your purpose and shine in your truth all up on @therealdaytime Your smile."

Brandy can't stop gushing over Sy'Rai

Despite Sy'Rai Smith's insecurities, Brandy has always been very proud of her daughter, who she shares with music producer Robert "Big Bert" Smith. Of course, Sy'Rai has shown her mother plenty of love too. In July, the teen took to TikTok to share a recreation of the video of her mom's hit, "The Boy Is Mine," to her over 430k followers. Smith also released her first single, "At Your Best," in April 2020, which featured elements from Aaliyah's 1994 cover of "At Your Best (You Are Love)."

Likewise, when Brandy appeared on The Wendy Williams Show in September 2020, she gushed over how proud she is of her daughter. "She's just a beautiful, solid young lady. I really trust her with her life and I feel like she's on the right path," Brandy said. "So I'm excited for her life. She's a musician as well, so it's exciting." Brandy has also opened up about how Sy'Rai's love for music has also kept her own career moving forward. "She wants to create her own lane, but she wants to do the same things that I'm doing, so setting an example for her has been an inspiration for me," Brandy told The New York Times in October 2021.
