Coolio Claims His Wife Swap Episode Fabricated One Major Thing
In the exciting world of reality television, it is often difficult to determine the validity of the show's contestants. When the popular ABC show "Wife Swap" announced a spin-off series featuring famous families, viewers were elated to get an inside look at the workings of a celebrity marriage.
"Celebrity Wife Swap" had the same premises as its predecessor. Matriarchs from each household temporarily swap lives, while the remaining family members learn to adjust to the lifestyle set in place by their new mom. When '90s rapper Coolio appeared in an episode of "Celebrity Wife Swap" alongside Mimi, a mom with kids of her own, things took a strange turn. The rapper's life was turned upside-down when Mimi decided to leave Coolio, following her week with Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath.
"I just hope Coolio realizes that if he doesn't start paying me more attention, then I don't think he'll be in my life very much longer," Mimi said during the episode (via HuffPost). However, after their appearance on "Celebrity Wife Swap," Coolio made quite the shocking allegation.
Coolio says it was all 'set up'
Coolio, born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., was eager to set the record straight after his appearance on the ABC show "Celebrity Wife Swap." Mimi, who worked as an exotic dancer in Las Vegas, revealed during the episode that she tackles all the homemaking tasks alone, while Coolio did little — except offer sexist remarks such as "a woman's work is never done" (via Yahoo!).
Unhappy with the fallout from the episode, Coolio adamantly claimed the show's fabricated the details of his relationship with Mimi. "Listen. It was all set up. I'm nothing like that. I'm not even with Mimi. I never was," he told the Daily Record.
The "Gangsta's Paradise" MC then explained that his relationship with Mimi is strictly platonic and that the depiction of him on "Celebrity Wife Swap" was completely inaccurate. "She's a friend of mine," Coolio said. Adding, "They tried to make me look bad. I don't want to do that stuff again."
Coolio and Mimi take their love to social media
Six weeks after the couple's appearance on "Celebrity Wife Swap," Mimi (along with her kids) left Coolio, after realizing she was fed up with the treatment she received during their relationship, according to Yahoo!. However, things between the duo seem to have gone in a different direction — at least on social media. As of this writing, Mimi's Instagram boasts several photos and videos featuring the "Fantastic Voyage" rapper, and she even refers to him as her "hubby" in a number of posts.
Coolio, still rocking his signature 90s hairstyle, appears to share the same feelings about Mimi. "That's my wifey," he commented on a Instagram post. And while it's unclear whether the couple have officially married, Mimi proudly includes Coolio's last name on her Instagram page's bio.
Furthermore, Coolio and Mimi have continued to appear on television together. The couple took part in OWN's 2020 reality show, "Love Goals," essentially contradicting Coolio's earlier claims that the two are just friends.
