The Huge Superhero Role Amanda Seyfried Regrets Turning Down

Superhero movies are a big deal in Hollywood. Most of them rake in millions of dollars in revenue and receive much fanfare, which is why it's not surprising that many actors don't hesitate to take them on. Nowadays, it's become harder to name actors who have not been in superhero films than those with Marvel or DC on their resumes.

Still, few manage to turn down superhero roles despite being offered them. In an interview with the RadioTimes.come, Jon Hamm said that signing up for superhero projects is a huge responsibility, and he can't see himself committing to it. "The deals that they make you do are so draconian," he shared. "You are signed on for not only the movie that you are signed on for ... but at least two more that you haven't read, and you have no idea what they are going to be, and all the crossover ones you are going to have to do." Meanwhile, Josh Hartnett revealed that he was asked to play multiple superheroes, but he turned them all down because he didn't want to be pigeonholed. "Spider-Man was something we talked about," Hartnett told Details (via Gawker). "Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that."

You may be surprised to find out that Amanda Seyfried also had the opportunity to appear in a superhero film — and she's opened up about it being her biggest career regret.

Amanda Seyfried thought Guardians of the Galaxy would flop

Suspension of disbelief is required when consuming superhero films. However, Amanda Seyfried found "Guardians of the Galaxy" so bizarre, that she passed up on the opportunity to star in it. In the "Awards Chatter" podcast, she explained she initially predicted the movie would be a disappointment at the box office.

"I didn't want to be part of the first Marvel movie that bombed," Seyfried admitted. "I said, 'Who wants to see a movie about a talking tree and a raccoon?' Which is clearly — I was very wrong." She added that it would be hard to recover her career if the movie flopped. "The script was great; it was all based on not wanting to be 'that guy,'" she continued. "Because if you are the star of a giant movie like that and it bombs, Hollywood does not forgive you. I've seen that happen to people, and it was a giant, giant fear — and I thought, is it worth it?"

Additionally, Seyfried said that she didn't want to be covered in green makeup, leading to fans assuming that she had refused the role of Gamora. "I turned down [a superhero movie] once, and they haven't called back since," she told MTV. "And it was a big one. I don't regret it because I didn't want to be green for six months out of every year." That sounds like a valid reason to us!

Will Amanda Seyfried ever star in a superhero film?

Even though Amanda Seyfried turned down the chance to star in "Guardians of the Galaxy," there may still be fans hoping that she'd show up in a superhero film one day. If you're one of them, don't hold your breath, as the actor has no intention to take on those projects. It's simply not in her wheelhouse.

"I don't imagine there are many agents who don't feel like their clients wouldn't benefit from a big superhero movie. I've really had to push against it," she told the Associated Press. "But I have no interest in being that physical, and being that much of a trip to my imagination every day. I'm not a fan of green screen. I'm just not. I want to have fun when I'm working."

Of course, Seyfried still thinks that "superhero movies are wonderful." They're not just for her. She did offer one reason for a small amount of regret on her part. "They tell beautiful stories through superheroes, and my daughter's now really obsessed with superheroes now," she told MTV. "Part of me wishes I'd done it, but the other part of me is like, 'I had a life to live,' and I don't think I would've been happy."
