There are a slew of disturbing things we ignore about Tom Cruise's life today, not least of which is his fanatical devotion to Scientology. While his career keeps hitting milestones, behind the scenes, the actor is reportedly guilty of some seriously shady behavior. Much of it involves his personal life and his high-profile marriages to Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, which were both plagued by some weird truths. However, that may just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Cruise's questionable actions in love.

Back in 2012, Vanity Fair published a bombshell investigation in which it uncovered that the Church of Scientology and, more specifically, its leader, David Miscavige, was allegedly trying to run Cruise's relationships. According to the outlet, after the actor split from Penélope Cruz in 2004 because she refused to join Scientology, per Insider, the church stepped in. As several sources claimed, Miscavige's wife Shelly supposedly began auditioning members, who all happened to be beautiful actors, for the role of Cruise's next partner. She allegedly told prospects they were auditioning for a Scientology promo film when, in reality, they were being asked about Cruise and vetted as a potential match.

However, it wasn't just Miscavige and his wife running the search. The actor also reportedly contributed to the hunt for his future wife and set his sights on a number of Hollywood actors, including a then-unknown Sofia Vergara.

Was Tom Cruise hoping to marry Sofia Vergara?

While the Church of Scientology continued holding auditions to find Tom Cruise the perfect match, per Vanity Fair, the actor reportedly held his own search and shortlisted a number of Hollywood leading ladies. According to the outlet, Cruise was hoping to charm either Scarlett Johansson or Sofia Vergara, although his efforts eventually failed. But that's not because he didn't try seriously hard to impress. As biographer Andrew Morton, who wrote "Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography," told the New York Post, Cruise actually wrote a wish list of partners, which he shared with David Miscavige & Co. It reportedly included Jennifer Garner and Jessica Alba, as well, and the church set to work.

Honing in on Vergara, the church is said to have created an elaborate plan, in which it asked Cruise's friend, Will Smith, to invite her to a pre-Oscar party, which he would also happen to attend. According to Morton, "She was dazzled by Tom's megawatt smile and amused by the blizzard of phone calls, flowers and chocolates that followed their first meeting." He then invited her to the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, where she met Miscavige and was allegedly auditioned and told she would have to convert from Catholicism to Scientology. That's when she quickly walked away. "She was fundamentally terrified of Scientology," an insider told Morton. "She sincerely believed that she would be struck down by God and burn in hell if she joined."

How Tom Cruise's religion has affected his personal life

Tom Cruise has been married three times and all of his unions have one thing in common (other than ending in divorce): religion was behind their demise. As we previously reported, Cruise was first married to Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990 and she was actually the one who introduced him to Scientology. However, while religion brought them together, it also drove them apart. As she told Playboy in 1993 (via E! News), though, it wasn't Scientology that was to blame. "Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk," she mused. "At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need."

Cruise quickly moved on and married Nicole Kidman in 1990, but they divorced in 2001. According to HBO documentary "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" (via Vanity Fair), this time, Scientology did play a role in the breakup. Director Alex Gibney claimed the church actively broke up the couple because its leader, David Miscavige, feared that Kidman was having a negative impact on Cruise's beliefs. "Miscavige was afraid that Nicole Kidman was slowly taking Tom away from the church so there was a concerted effort to get him back," Gibney said. Those efforts reportedly included tapping Kidman's phone and turning the couple's two children against her. Finally, Cruise married Katie Holmes in 2006, but she filed for divorce in 2012 after distancing herself from the church and deciding she did not want their daughter, Suri, raised in Scientology, per The Hollywood Reporter.
