Inside Demi Lovato's Friendship With Miley Cyrus

Former Disney darlings Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus sat down for an Instagram Live chat in 2020 and gushed over their longtime friendship, which they admit has been pretty rocky. Cyrus also opened up about the backlash she faced after twerking at the MTV Video Music Awards, which resulted in the pop star going years without wearing a swimsuit. "I feel like we've gone through times where we're closer and then distant — and that's fine, that's what friends do. I just wish I could've been there for you," Lovato told Cyrus. "But if that ever f***ing happens again, you better call me."

The singers went on to explain that they "lost contact" throughout the years, mostly due to "petty drama," but their friendship is now stronger than ever. "We can not talk forever and then some bulls**t will go down, and I'll just know you're the person I want to reach out to," Cyrus told the "Cook for the Summer" songstress. And while all seems well between the former child stars, a deeper look inside their relationship would reveal a messy past.

Miley Cyrus once mocked Demi Lovato

Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato's friendship was not always as vibrant as it seems these days. In 2008, Cyrus, who was starring on the hit Disney show "Hannah Montana," made a video mocking Lovato and fellow actor Selena Gomez. Days later, Cyrus apologized for her part in the shady clip, and suggested that she and friend Mandy Jiroux were only "being silly." "They have, like, a YouTube account, and so at the end of our video we did put 'Go to their YouTube.' ... We were kind of supporting their channel, but also being silly because they were being funny, and that's our thing — to be funny," Cyrus said in a statement to Popstar Magazine (via MTV). "Elvis says, 'Imitation is the greatest form of flattery,' so we were imitating them being funny," the "Can't Be Tamed" singer added.

And while some believed that Cyrus and Lovato continued feuding throughout their years with Disney Channel, Cyrus shut down those rumors in 2019. "I grew up collaborating with Demi [Lovato] and Selena [Gomez]. There was never any competition," Cyrus declared during an appearance on Capital FM's "Capital Breakfast."

Miley Cyrus is the only Disney star Demi Lovato is friends with

Demi Lovato made it very clear that of all her fellow Disney actors, Miley Cyrus is the only one they speak to regularly. When asked by Harper's Bazaar in 2020 if they still have contact with the Jonas Brothers, the "Tell Me You Love Me" singer confirmed that they no longer have a relationship with any of the famous siblings but added, "I talk to Miley [Cyrus]." Lovato continued, "She's awesome, and I love her to death and always will, always have. But I think she's kind of the only one from that era that I still stay in touch with." During the interview, Lovato also discussed her relationship with former "Wizards of Waverly Place" star Selena Gomez. Lovato explained that they were "not friends with her," but added that they will "always have love for her."

And while Gomez has yet to respond to Lovato's remarks, the actor did open up about the unforgettable moment when the pair met during an audition for "Barney." "I remember she had a red bow on. I'll never forget it ... I just thought the world of her," Gomez said during an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter's "Awards Chatter" podcast.
