The One Detail That Ruined Chloë Grace Moretz's Crush On Johnny Depp

Chloë Grace Moretz has been on the Hollywood scene since she was a kiddo. And while she may be viewed as a youngster in Hollywood, the established actor has worked hard in television and film since 2004. Whether you love her as the voice of Wednesday Addams or remember her role as Mindy in "Kick-Ass," she's a force to be reckoned with–with charisma far beyond her years. Perhaps her ageless ephemera in Hollywood stems from becoming famous so young.

She told Hunger Magazine that "everything shifted" when, at 12, she became famous after starring in "Kick-Ass." After all, she's been in the spotlight for most of her life. "It is kind of a distant memory, in the sense that I was a kid, and 90 percent of the time no one would really bother me," she told the outlet. "But after "Kick-Ass," the first time I experienced paparazzi, it was 10 to 15 adult guys surrounding a 12-year-old girl. They pushed my mom and she ended up falling into traffic — she didn't get hurt, but the situation was really chaotic."

So, given the stereotype of older Hollywood men dating younger women and Moretz's tendency to seem far beyond her years, it's no surprise she'd have a crush on Johnny Depp despite his being more than twice her age. But she has revealed that something ruined that for her.

Lily-Rose Depp's age was off-putting for Chloë Grace Moretz

Tim Burton, who has never been shy about constantly casting Johnny Depp, made a film starring Johnny and Chloë Grace Moretz in 2011 called "Dark Shadows." At the time, Moretz told Vogue U.K. that she had a crush on the actor, but was put off by one peculiarity. "I did have a bit of a crush on him before I started," she told the outlet at 14, "but then I realized he has a daughter who was only two years younger [than] me, and then I thought 'Maybe not."

She also told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2012 that she had a crush on Simon Baker, who cast her in her first big role at 6 years old. So maybe it's more of an admiration situation? She also told the outlet in the same interview that Johnny was the epitome of a dad during their filming of "Dark Shadows" together. "He's a normal guy ... I would look at him and think 'Wow, you are such a dad'," she told SMH. "He's so sweet. When they say 'cut' he's just Johnny. When they say 'action' he is his character."

It's clear Moretz had a lot of love for Johnny during their time on-set — though the age discrepancy between her and his daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, might've been off-putting. In fact, the concern of age has been a constant in Moretz's career, and she's been quite vocal about it.

Being in the public eye has taken a toll

As someone who has been in the industry since a very young age, Chloë Grace Moretz has dealt with her fair share of bullying. After the posters for her 2017 film "Red Shoes" came out, she spoke out against the body shaming imagery that connected weight to beauty. She has also struggled with body dysmorphia so when memes like a cutaway gag from "Family Guy" from 2011 became a side-by-side meme with a photo of Moretz carrying a pizza box, she pulled away from the public eye.

"I was 18 and doing a red carpet. I walked off of it and I felt so much self-loathing and was really confused about the experience that just went down ... For a long time, I was able to be the Chloë that people see and the Chloë that I am in private," she told Hunger. "Then those two worlds collided and I felt really raw and vulnerable and open. And then came the onslaught of horrific memes that started getting sent to me about my body."

She further added that "It was something so benign as walking into a hotel with leftovers" and that "when I see that meme, it's something very hard for me to overcome." Despite such, her bravery in speaking out about the struggles of being a child actor or just someone in the industry is inspiring. Keep fighting the good fight, Chloë!
