Kim Kardashian's style has evolved drastically over the years. From appearing alongside BFF Paris Hilton in Juicy Couture tracksuits in the early 2000s to now having her own clothing line, Kardashian can claim her fashion icon status. While the reality star has made some bold fashion choices, her style became more eclectic in recent years.
In 2021, Kardashian made waves when she showed up to the Met Gala wearing a black outfit that covered her from head to toe. The controversial look was designed by Balenciaga and came complete with a face-obscuring mask and a long cape, per Page Six. While Balenciaga's creative director called the look "conceptually speaking, quite important," many were quick to make fun of the outfit.
"Why is Kim Kardashian dressed as a sleep paralysis demon waiting for you to wake up?" a fan tweeted. "[K]im & kanye entering the met gala looking like two dementors," another joked. Kardashian's bold fashion choices have created much fodder for social media users and her latest holiday outfit has fans calling her out yet again.

'Tis the season to wear all black, according to Kim Kardashian. The SKIMS founder showed up to Paris Hilton's Christmas party in a cropped black t-shirt and flared leather pants that made her stand out amongst others dressed in holiday attire. "My mom always throws the most iconic parties. Loved celebrating the holidays with family and friends this weekend. What are your favorite traditions this time of year?" Hilton posted on Instagram in a carousel of the festivities.
"Wtf is kim wearing," a confused fan replied. "Why Kim always dress like that now? All the clothes in her closet and she looks like she got done shopping at Ross or TJMaxx? All she wears now is crop tops, leggings and spandex. I'm gonna be so happy when this trend of wearing workout gear for actual outfits is over with," another fan wrote. "Everyone dressed all nice and Kim looks like a 15YO teen that was forced to her parents party," an Instagram user mused. Another asked, "Did Kim not understand the holiday party attire assignment?"
Kardashian's outfit choices of late seem to be cropped tops and leather pants. On December 17, she posted a picture of her on Instagram wearing a midriff-baring blue t-shirt and leather biker pants. Just a few weeks ago, she shared a snap of her wearing a leather bandeau top with another pair of patterned leather pants. Perhaps she's looking to start trends in 2023.
Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton's friendship goes way back
Even though Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton's friendship is currently in the spotlight thanks to Kardashian's questionable outfit choices, the two have actually been friends since pre-school. Kardashian confirmed the longevity of their friendship in 2008 after Hilton made a comment about Kardashian's backside, which she later apologized for. "Paris and I have been friends since we were kids," the reality television star told In Touch (via Today), adding that she accepted her bestie's apology.
Because the two have been so inseparable, rumors started in the early 2000s about how Kardashian was Hilton's personal assistant. In 2014, though, the SKIMS founder cleared up those rumors. "I had an eBay closet organizing company, and she was one of my clients," she told Recode in 2014, indicating that the two bonded over their love of fashion and clothes. But like most friendships, Kardashian and Hilton went through a small rough patch. Once Hilton's sex tape was leaked, Kardashian was asked about their friendship, as the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star went through a similar situation. "We didn't really talk about it," the 42-year-old told Rolling Stone in 2016 (via HuffPost).
She added that she would have offered Hilton advice, but the "friendship had fizzled before that." Thankfully, they reunited, and now the main thing making headlines with the pair is Kardashian's holiday look. The aspiring lawyer's attire at her best friend's holiday party wasn't the first outfit that has been criticized by fans, though.
Kim Kardashian's outfits have been criticized after she split from Kanye Ye West
In a 2012 episode of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," Kanye "Ye" West gave Kim Kardashian a closet makeover. "Kanye has definitely inspired me to be a little bit more of an individual," the SKIMS founder said in the episode (via People), adding that her style had been "evolving" with time. "He is a fashion designer and he loves clothes, so I'm excited to collaborate with him to see what his take on fashion is."
However, when Kardashian and Ye went their separate ways, the reality television star opened up about how dependent she had become on the rapper for styling tips. "I got to the point where I would ask him for advice for everything, down to what I wear," she said on an episode of "The Kardashians" (via Entertainment Tonight). "Even now I'm having panic attacks, like, 'What do I wear?'"
In another episode of "The Kardashians" (via the Daily Mail), the California native set the record straight on her wardrobe choices after people criticized her flame outfit. "The tea is, this is one of the outfits [Ye] styled and picked out," she said, indicating that the comments brought up the fact that Kardashian has to style herself after the split from the rapper. "So, if you guys knew that and if we were together, you guys would think it's the coolest outfit in the world."
