Who Is Dean McDermott's Son From His First Marriage?

When we hear the name Dean McDermott, the first love interest that comes to mind is undoubtedly Tori Spelling. However, before his marriage to Spelling — or, ahem, during the early stages of their relationship — McDermott was married to Mary Jo Eustace. The former couple shared a son, Jack McDermott — but what do we know about him?

In light of how Dean and Spelling first got together, it would make sense if there was some bitterness between everyone involved. There has, indeed, been plenty of drama in the past. After all, Eustace's 2009 memoir was titled "Divorce Sucks: What to do when irreconcilable differences, lawyer fees, and your ex's Hollywood Wife make you miserable." Oh, and it featured a spicy subtitle, too: "My husband left me for Tori Spelling ... (and you thought your divorce sucked!)." Despite all that, the now-blended family has had a few amicable moments, and when it comes to co-parenting, they've done a pretty good job. In 2018, Eustace told Us Weekly that Spelling volunteered to cover Dean's financial obligations to his then-college student son. A year later, Eustace was featured in Dean's podcast, "Daddy Issues," and spoke about making friends with Spelling in the build-up to Jack's birthday party. Dean described their dynamic as nothing short of a "Lovefest."

It's clear that Jack McDermott played a role in developing a bond between the two, but our question remains: what do we know about him?

He's out, and proud

Jack McDermott has long shared with the world that he's a gay man. His first Instagram post from 2015 is an outright celebration of Pride Week in Los Angeles. In a 2020 episode of Dean McDermott's "Daddy Issues" podcast, Jack joked that he'd never really hidden his identity. "[My dad] said he knew I was gay when I was dancing in a tutu on our cottage deck when I was 3 ... I mean, I was giving very direct hints," he joked. As for a more official coming out, Jack shared a hilarious story about the time his friend had been caught stealing, and both of them were arrested. Jack said after Dean arrived to pick him up from the police station, he asked his dad to hold back until his friend was released before revealing the two were dating. "He took a deep breath, and he was like, 'I respect you for telling me that and sharing that, and I'm very proud of you. ... but, this isn't getting you out of your f***ing punishment," Jack recounted.

Before the "Daddy Issues" episode, Tori Spelling also spoke about her stepson's coming out — and even revealed his doing so only brought them closer. In an Instagram post celebrating his 21st birthday, the actor wrote, "We found each other on a new level with a whole new respect for each other." We stan a supportive dynamic!

He's very protective of his family

Jack McDermott has undoubtedly united his parents and stepmom in the past. And, even as the Eustace and Spelling-McDermott families have dealt with drama over the years, he's stayed quiet. However, he recently drew a very public line in the sand.

Context: Dean McDermott and Mary Jo Eustace had just launched their own post-divorce podcast, "Ex's & Uh-Oh's," and were featured on the Canadian podcast, "Humble & Fred," to promote it. After Eustace recounted how Dean admitted to his affair with Tori Spelling, he closed his laptop on the interview. Shortly after, he quit "Ex's & Uh-Oh's" altogether. In the wake of McDermott's exit, Eustace spoke about his departure in a dedicated episode — and it's safe to say Jack wasn't impressed. Taking to Instagram, he acknowledged his typical silence on family matters while finally making his feelings known. He criticized his mother for "consistent attempts to malign [Dean's] character" (via People) and admitted that the family drama may have gone too far. "This ... has driven a wedge between our two families and created a divide I am not capable of mending. Sadly, I'm not sure it can be," he wrote.

So, who is Jack McDermott? An individual who is fiercely himself and a longtime unifier between families. Here's hoping each of his co-parents can learn to get along.
