Bravo Exits That Still Have Fans Reeling

Bravo gives viewers a lot (like season after season of addicting television), but it also takes away! And there's nothing more soul-crushing than discovering that your favorite Housewife or cast member will no longer be featured on the network. Since Bravo also has a legion of devoted fans who are very active on the internet, they sometimes play a role in who stays and who goes. Or they fuel nasty rumors that someone is leaving and cause a panic when that's not the case.

No one is safe from the online chatter, with head honcho Andy Cohen even falling victim to the surmising in 2022. The internet was ablaze with rumors that Cohen might be retiring, but the "Watch What Happens Live" host and executive producer of many hit Bravo shows denied the rumors. Cohen spoke to Us Weekly during the network's fan festival, BravoCon, that October and denied the speculation, stating, "That's not happening."

While talking about his own role on the network, he also offered insight into how casting decisions are made, sharing, "I think that cast shakeups are always in the offing for any season, for any city. It's a conversation that we always have. It's the reason that this franchise [has] been going for 16 years. We like to keep it fresh and we consider everything." Sadly, keeping things fresh often results in heartbreak for fans when their favorites get the ax. We're taking a look back at the Bravo exits that still have fans reeling...

Lisa Rinna is 'excited' for something new

Love her or hate her, there's no denying that Lisa Rinna delivered some great television on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" during her eight seasons on the show. So when the news broke that she'd be leaving the series after a nearly decade, the Bravo community was rattled by the update.

The actor gave a statement to People in the wake of the announcement, which read, "This is the longest job I have held in my 35 year career and I am grateful to everyone at Bravo and all those involved in the series. It has been a fun eight-year run and I am excited for what is to come!" The outlet revealed that her contract had expired at the end of Season 12, and both Rinna and Bravo made the decision not to renew.

Rinna was a polarizing presence on Bravo over the years, with some truly iconic moments — from throwing a wine glass at Kim Richards to accusing co-star Yolanda Hadid of having Munchausen syndrome. She had fallen out of favor with some fans after meddling in Kyle Richards and Kathy Hilton's sisterly relationship. Rinna was shockingly booed by fans at BravoCon during the show's panel in October 2022. Despite the change in public opinion, Rinna took it all in stride, telling People after the event, "I got booed! It was fabulous... I loved it. I've been in this business for 32 years... I've never gotten booed in my life."

Dorinda Medley had a hard time on her last season

After she "made it nice" for six seasons on "The Real Housewives of New York City," fan favorite Dorinda Medley left the show in 2020. That August, the beloved reality star took to social media to make the sad announcement, writing in part on Instagram, "What a journey this has been. I have laughed and cried and tried to Make it Nice... But all things must come to an end. This was a great outlet for me to heal when my late husband Richard passed away. I have met so many interesting people and learned so much about myself, about life and about women along the way."

She had a famously rocky final season, the show's twelfth, and even opened up to People when the trailer first aired in April 2020. "I had an emotional year. And everybody assumes from watching that clip that it's because I was fighting with this one or drinking too much of this, but I was going through a lot of changes that were really taking a toll in my personal life," Medley explained. She had a flood at her home, a broken rib, and relationship challenges to deal with.

During that season's reunion, she even spilled that she probably shouldn't have been filming at the time, sharing with host Andy Cohen and her castmates, "I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown" (via People). She shed light on her departure from the show, but it didn't make it any less painful for diehard fans.

Stassi Schroeder was fired for racist actions

"Vanderpump Rules" star Stassi Schroeder was fired from the series she helped turn into a phenomenon in June 2020. The young reality star, whose love life and friendships were often the focal point on the "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" spinoff for eight seasons, was in hot water over a 2018 scandal. SUR employee Faith Stowers, who occasionally appeared on the Bravo show, took to Instagram Live to talk about the past racist behavior of Schroeder and co-star Kristen Doute. Stowers explained, "There was this article on Daily Mail where there was an African American lady. It was a weird photo, so she looked very light-skinned and had these different, weird tattoos. They showcased her, and I guess this woman was robbing people. And they called the cops and said it was me" (via CNN).

The racist conduct resulted in both Schroeder and Doute being fired. Schroeder put out a statement at the time on Instagram apologizing for her behavior, and then remained relatively quiet for the rest of the summer until appearing for an interview with Tamron Hall that September. On the show, Schroeder took accountability, sharing, "I'm someone who messed up quite a few times. I am the reason why I'm in this situation. And I think a lot of people wanted me to focus on cancel culture and whether I was a victim or not, and that's just, it's not how I feel at all."

Vicki Gunvalson was too 'expensive'

This one really hurt! After letting her life play out on television screens for 14 years, Vicki Gunvalson finally left the series that started it all — "The Real Housewives of Orange County" — in 2020. That January, the polarizing reality star took to Instagram to make her statement, writing in part, "I will always be the OG of the OC, but it's time to say goodbye to The Real Housewives of Orange County. It's been an incredible ride for 14 years and I want [to] thank all of you for your support, for your love and for 'whooping it up' with me along the way."

While her social media post made it seem like the departure was on her own terms, it was later revealed to be a different story. Gunvalson appeared on former co-star Kelly Dodd's podcast, "The Rick and Kelly Show," in 2022 and shared that she was fired because of her high salary, since newer talent would be less cost-prohibitive for Bravo. "I did get expensive. And I'm okay with that, I'm worth it. The ratings were the best they've ever been when we were on, and I, you get what you pay for," she told Kelly on the podcast, in true Vicki Gunvalson form. The star does miss her "RHOC" days.

Jill Zarin knew RHONY was full of fighting

"The Real Housewives of New York City" said goodbye to an original cast member in 2011, to the chagrin of fans of the franchise. Jill Zarin was very candid about the fact that she had been fired by Bravo executives when leaving the show after Season 4. The reality star went on "Good Morning America" to talk about her departure, sharing, "It was a little jolting. I'll be honest. It didn't feel good. Nobody likes to not be asked back to the party" (via ABC News).

The star could take solace in the fact that she wasn't singled out. The network also let stars Cindy Barshop, Alex McCord, and Kelly Bensimon go at the same time. Still reeling from the news, Zarin got super honest about her thoughts on the series that made her a star, telling the morning show, "There's no question there was fighting going on. But I believe the format of the show encourages that. ... The ratings encourage that. It's a toxic environment. It took me months to come down from it."

Despite stepping away as a main cast member, Zarin would return to the cast as a "friend of" a few years later, and she's been part of "The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip." Over a decade after her big "RHONY" exit, she told ET, "I left the show, and then the show fired me. It's a semantics thing."

Jax Taylor's comment got him and Brittany Cartwright fired

Bravo viewers watched their courtship unfold and even witnessed their wedding, so it was shocking for some to part ways with the polarizing Jax Taylor and his lovable Southern beauty Brittany Cartwright. In December 2020, six months after their co-stars Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute were fired, Taylor and Cartwright both took to social media to share the news that they would be departing the series.

Cartwright's Instagram post read in part, "The last 5 years on Vanderpump Rules have been some of the most challenging, rewarding and fulfilling years of my life. Although this is difficult to share, Jax and I will not be returning for another season of Vanderpump Rules. We are excited to take this time to focus on our growing family and share with you our new endeavors." Jax, whose post was later taken down, parroted a similar message. And though it seemed like this was on their own terms, a Bravo rep told Variety, "Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright will not be returning to 'Vanderpump Rules.'"

The reason for the couple's firing seemed to be linked to the same reason Schroeder and Doute got the ax — harassment of SUR employee Faith Stowers. Taylor's reply to a tweet from late 2017 resurfaced, similarly accusing Stowers of committing crimes. According to Us Weekly, the comment read, "She's wanted by the police for grand theft auto and 'awol' from military, bad idea to be on a reality show dude. Someone's going to jail."

Fredrik Eklund moved on from Million Dollar Listing

The "Million Dollar Listing" family lost an important member in January 2022. Beloved cast member Fredrik Eklund, who was original to "Million Dollar Listing: New York City" before also starring on the Los Angeles spinoff in 2019, stepped away from the Bravo network. He announced the news with an Instagram post, which read in part, "After an amazing 11 years, I've decided it's time for the next chapter of my life, and to leave Million Dollar Listing. It's an end of an era and a new start for me. I let Andy [Cohen], the Producers and the Executives know last week how grateful I am. Eternally grateful, I mean what an incredible run we had together."

Aside from the fans being upset by Eklund leaving the shows, some of his co-stars were also saddened by the news. Tyler Whitman told Page Six at the time, "Fredrik is an inspiration. He definitely paved the way for quirky folks like me to show you can be yourself and still have a very successful business." There were murmurs of some drama with Eklund and other co-stars, but he told The Hollywood Reporter that his exit was due to unrelated family and professional matters. "I have this incredible machinery, this big team, that has exploded just in the last couple of years. And it's very exciting, and it's pulling me in all sorts of directions.

Tamra Judge was allegedly demoted, so she left

"The Real Housewives of Orange County" lost a major pot-stirrer when Tamra Judge left the show in January 2020. After receiving an offensive demotion, according to sources at Radar, the star of 12 successful seasons quit the Bravo series. A source told the outlet, "Bravo bosses wanted Tamra to be [a] bridge from the old cast to the new in Season 15 and she refused. ... She was even more than demoted to a friend role. She'd have very little camera time." The source even shared specifics on what Judge's salary difference would be, revealing, "She would go from $900,000 a season to $20,000 an episode for just three show appearances, which would add up to $60,000 total. It was humiliating."

Judge said a few words with a since-deleted Instagram post about her departure at the time, writing in part, "It's been a wild 12 years. But it's time for me to move on. I'm sad to go but I'm very excited about my future." Fortunately, fans didn't have to live without the star for long. In July 2022, it was revealed that she would be returning to the franchise for Season 17.

Lisa Vanderpump's 'horrible time' in Beverly Hills

Bravo fans never believed they'd see the day when "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" OG Lisa Vanderpump would leave her franchise, but in 2019, she did. Vanderpump had a particularly drama-packed Season 9. This final outing included a fallout with best friend Kyle Richards and a scandal involving co-star Dorit Kemsley's adoption of one of Vanderpump's rescue dogs, Lucy Lucy Apple Juice (fondly referred to as PuppyGate by "RHOBH" superfans). She even chose not to attend that season's reunion taping, telling the Daily Mail, "The objective of the reunion is to reunite, right? And I have no inclination to reunite with the women who've been harassing me for 10 months now."

In the wake of her departure, Vanderpump told "Extra," "The last year was a very negative year for me. And I feel like now we're moving forward. They've had their resolution. I just had a horrible time doing the show and with the women. It was a very sad time of my life and it wasn't made any better. And I just decided to walk away."

Though she no longer appeared on her franchise, her spinoff "Vanderpump Rules" still occasionally brought her back to our television screens.

Phaedra Parks was ousted for a nasty rumor

One of the most shocking firings by Bravo to date went down in 2017 when Phaedra Parks was dismissed from "The Real Housewives of Atlanta." The star, who had appeared on the show since 2010 with her debut on Season 3, was let go amidst surprising circumstances, according to TMZ. The network chose to part ways with Parks following the revelation that she had been spreading rape rumors about her co-stars. Parks told Williams that their castmate Kandi Burruss and her husband Todd Tucker had been plotting to drug and sexually assault Williams.

The allegations were caught on camera, but Burruss objected to their airing at the time. Despite the conversation not hitting the small screen initially, the allegations were raised during an episode of Season 9's reunion. Burruss was understandably furious when the rumors were brought up, stating on the reunion, "She and I, it had escalated over the years, but to repeat and say I would drug somebody, it's just a multiple level to that... She, as someone who knows me, knows I don't do drugs... You should understand that drugging somebody while they're drinking and taking them home is rape. Y'all accused me of being a f***ing rapist" (via the Daily Mail).

Considering how offensive the untrue allegations were, Bravo fired Parks from the series.

If you or anyone you know has been a victim of sexual assault, help is available. Visit the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network website or contact RAINN's National Helpline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).

Denise Richards said farewell for financial reasons

Though she only lasted two seasons, Denise Richards provided a decade's worth of drama on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills." Fans were sad to see the actor leave the reality series in 2020, but it wasn't a shock considering her tough Season 10 showing. Richards' rep confirmed her departure to Variety that September. And though it was totally understandable that Richards would want to get out of the chaos — she spent her last season fighting allegations that she had an affair with former "Real Housewives" star Brandi Glanville — the scandals bumped the series to highest-rated cable show for its weekly Wednesday airings.

Despite being at odds with her castmates, a source told Page Six shortly after her exit that it was actually a financial decision. "People think that she didn't want to come back and that it's because she got 'mean-girled,'" said the source. "The truth is she did want to come back. But [Bravo] didn't want to pay her what she asked for. It was way out of her pay grade." Sounds like Richards knows her worth!
