Celebrity Couples That People Have Had Enough Of
Before we fully get into this, let's take a look at some of the famous couples that people seem to love and root for: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson can be placed in that category, and so can Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Beyoncé and Jay-Z can be thrown in there as well, and of course, plenty of other couples that people seem to admire — I mean, who doesn't love seeing what appears to be a happy, healthy relationship?
On the flip side, however, there are famous couples who elicit an entirely different reaction from the public. For example, before Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles split, Styles' fans hated the relationship and let it be known. Then there's Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner, whose relationship seemed to annoy people before they parted ways. That could be due to the former couple's flashy nature.
Moreover, when 10 people tragically died at Scott's Astroworld Festival in 2021, and the rapper was blasted for not stopping his set, people ripped his relationship with Jenner even more. But, trust us, there are plenty more celebrity couples who people have seemingly had enough of — and we're taking a look at who they are. Cool?
Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian
In January 2021, Us Weekly reported that Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian were an item. The following month, the rocker and reality star confirmed the news by posting a photo of themselves holding hands. But that would be far from the last pic they shared that showed them being affectionate toward each other. The couple was seen putting on a kissing exhibition at places like red carpets, on a boat in Italy, and on the beach. In other words, their PDA was pretty much everywhere, which seems to be the main reason why some people can't stomach their relationship.
Both Barker and Kardashian — who tied the knot in May 2022 — have responded to the criticism, like when Barker shot back at an Instagram user after that person expressed shock that he posted a photo of himself that didn't show a makeout session with Kardashian. The rocker's words were on the X-rated side, so we won't share what he said, but he seemed highly annoyed. Kardashian responded to the criticism in May of 2022 when she posted a photo of herself and Barker leaning in for a kiss."If you haven't guessed by now, we're big fans of PDA," wrote the reality star on her Poosh website. "We're challenging you to rethink how you view PDA — and rebranding it as self-care."
Despite enduring criticism for years, the couple continues to share their love with the world — whether we like it or not.
Katharine McPhee and David Foster
Katharine McPhee and David Foster first met on the set of "American Idol" in 2006 when McPhee was a contestant and Foster was a guest mentor. By 2017, the celebs were seen smooching, as People reported, and by the end of July of the following year, they got engaged. News of them being a couple drew instant attention. Not just because of their famous names but because Foster was 68 and McPhee 34 when they got engaged. So, people felt compelled to share their opinion on the celebrity couple's big age gap while also bringing up that Foster had been married four times before McPhee.
Then in 2018, days after getting engaged, the "Smash" star responded to those who scoffed at Foster's age. "Y'all should be worrying more about registering to vote and midterm elections than who's marrying me," she tweeted. Both the singer and music producer have talked about their age difference in separate interviews. McPhee did it in 2021 on "Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy Podcast," admitting that she was concerned about what people would think.
Meanwhile, Foster discussed it with People. "People always make the reference with Kat and me with the age difference, but I've always said there's so many things that can bring a marriage down, and age difference is just one of them," he explained.
Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty
Nicki Minaj's relationship with Safaree Samuels received a lot of attention, and her union with Meek Mill got even more. Then when Minaj announced that she was in a new relationship with her sweetheart, Kenneth Petty, on Instagram, it also got attention — but there was more outrage than anything else.
That has everything to do with Petty being convicted of attempted assault in 1995 and serving four and a half years in prison for it. He also had to register as an offender, something that he didn't do once moving to California with Minaj, which got him in even more legal trouble. Petty served seven years in prison as well, after pleading guilty to manslaughter in 2006.
Then when it was reported that he and Minaj got married in 2019, the level of backlash grew. Minaj even disabled her social media comments at one point because of the negative chatter, which continued once the couple announced they were having a baby. But the "Moment 4 Life" rapper wouldn't take the backlash lying down because she eventually told people to stay out of her personal life. "If you've ever left ur own page & ur own life to tell someone who's on their OWN page living their OWN LIFE what YOU DON'T like about WHO or what they posted instead of just scrolling past, you're a ummm ... what do they call it? A [clown emoji]," she wrote in part.
Minaj continued to court controversy when she labeled herself "Trump's No. 1 fan." In a post on X, the social media account for the Democratic Party reminded followers of Minaj's controversial relationship, writing, "Her husband is a registered sex offender btw."
Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt
In reality television, it seems that some people are made into villains by the viewers, and others choose it for themselves. Spencer Pratt, of "The Hills," appears to be among the latter since he caused tons of drama on the show, namely with the star Lauren Conrad and his sister Stephanie Pratt. So, he was repeatedly blasted online for his behavior, and the bad guy image that he created followed him after "The Hills" concluded. As for his wife, Heidi Montag, it could be argued that some dislike her by association. But it could be due to the couple — collectively known as "Speidi" — doing whatever it takes to keep their names in the press.
If anything, their 2009 book "How to Be Famous: Our Guide to Looking the Part, Playing the Press, and Becoming a Tabloid Fixture" was a confirmation of their desire to maintain fame. The couple launched a podcast titled "Make Speidi Famous Again" as well. They were even accused of lying about getting divorced just for publicity. But all and all, Spencer and his wife were pretty successful in stretching their 15 minutes after "The Hills" wrapped up, thanks to appearances on shows like "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me out of Here!," "Celebrity Big Brother," and "Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars 2." Their thirst for fame wasn't just to make headlines, though, as they likely needed money, seeing they blew through a whopping $10 million, which was reported in 2014.
In 2026, Pratt, who revealed his status as a registered Republican, announced he would be running for mayor of Los Angeles. He also debuted his new book, "The Guy You Loved to Hate: Confessions from a Reality TV Villain." Whether or not people change their feelings on Speidi remains to be seen.
Cher and Alexander Edwards
In November 2022, Cher was seen holding hands with Def Jam music executive Alexander "AE" Edwards during a night out at the restaurant Craig's in West Hollywood, California and people were buzzing about it for a few reasons. One, it's Cher, so if she's dating someone, it's going to cause a stir. Two, the veteran entertainer is 40 years Edwards' senior, and three, he's been accused of being a player since he dated Amber Rose and admitted to cheating on her. Edwards and Rose have a son together as well.
Cher confirmed that she and Edwards were an item shortly after the photo surfaced, and people had a lot to say about the age gap, which she responded to. "I'm not defending us. Haters are gonna hate ... Doesn't matter that we're happy & not bothering anyone," Cher tweeted on November 6, 2022. People brought up Edwards' past cheating as well. "Babe, English is my first language, I'm in [heart emoji]. Not blinded by it. Know what I know ... Smoke doesn't always mean [fire emoji]," Cher responded in a now-deleted tweet posted by The Shade Room.
In early January 2026, Cher revealed on "Armchair Expert" that she found exactly what she was looking for. "Before I met [Edwards], I walked around my house saying, 'I want a man and a toddler.' ... I wasn't expecting them maybe together but that's what I wanted" (via People).
Olivia Munn and John Mulaney
When John Mulaney stopped by "Late Night with Seth Meyers" in 2021 and said that he and Olivia Munn were having a child together, a lot of people weren't thrilled about it. That had to do with Mulaney struggling with drugs in the past and starting his union with Munn shortly after leaving a sober living facility. But probably an even bigger reason for people not digging the relationship is because they seemed to love Mulaney's marriage to Anna Marie Tendler, someone he often mentioned in his comic routines. The former couple announced their split in 2021.
"John Mulaney went to rehab, got divorced, went on tour, started dating Olivia Munn, and got her pregnant all in 9 months," one person tweeted. "If you mention your partner in your creative work, it becomes extra immoral and actually illegal to ever cheat or leave them," wrote another. Munn and Mulaney welcomed a son in December 2021. One month before that, "The Newsroom" actor spoke about the backlash in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "It's definitely not foreign for me to have people speculate incorrectly about things and to have rumors run rampant in one way," Munn explained. "They think they know our relationship so well. When in reality, they don't ... For whatever reason, it's easier to blame me ... If I try to say anything, I run the risk of being called messy or not telling the truth."
The couple, who welcomed a second child in September 2024, faced more backlash in June 2025 when Munn told People she doesn't let their children watch Ms. Rachel, saying, "These kid shows drive me crazy." The response was immediate — and extreme. The publication pulled the article, placing an editor's note in its stead, which reads, in part, "On June 11, we took the unusual step of removing the post ... due to the violent threats that escalated towards the interview subject and her family."
