What We Know About David Muir's Personal Life

As ABC viewers and many of his co-stars have long attested, David Muir is a catch in just about every sense of the word. Despite that, however, when it comes to his personal life, he remains a little bit of a mystery.

Per IMDb, Muir has racked up no less than 23 Emmy nominations over his career, with an additional six Writers Guild of America nominations to his name. However, those aren't the only accolades he's received. In 2017, he was named by People as one of the "15 Sexiest Newsmen Alive." Of that particular accolade, Muir joked that his heartthrob status was news to him. "I remember interviewing my sister's friends with my Microcasette recorder, so if there's anyone who finds reporting, particularly in this era, appealing then I'm grateful," he said at the time.

Baffled though he may have been, it's pretty clear that fans can't get enough of Muir. In response to a New Year's Instagram post, post-vacation, countless ABC viewers sent him their well-wishes and shared that he was their favorite newscaster of all. "Sooo good to see you back on the show!!! Not the same w/out you," wrote one. Another, meanwhile, gushed, "You're so good looking that you need a whole new year to show off your good looks!!!" There's no denying, then, that Muir is one of the darlings of the news world. We still can't help wonder, though: what do we know about his personal life?

David Muir's job is everything to him

It wouldn't be entirely correct to say that David Muir isn't, and never has been, married. After all, while he's never made it official with a partner, it's pretty clear that newscasting is the one true love of his life — and he dedicates his all to it. In fact, speaking to his hometown publication, Syracuse.com, in 2014, he admitted, "I often work seven days a week [but] I'm not looking for a pat on the back because I love what I do."

George Stephanopoulos' rumored rival wasn't exaggerating. In an interview with USA Today, he shared that while, no day looks the same as the next in his line of work, one thing that has remained pretty standard across the board is his jam-packed schedule. Muir explained that hours of preparation went into each newscast... but that at the end of the day, anything could change, and he needs  to stay dialed-in, at all times. "There's no such thing as building a lineup early in the day and delivering that newscast at 6.30," he pointed out.

For that reason, Muir is the first to admit that fostering a family of his own is not exactly an option. As he shared in his Syracuse.com interview, he once even had to re-home his dog, Pryor, with his sister after he realized he would not be able to give him the attention he deserved. (Hey, even dream jobs can have their downsides!)

But David Muir's still big on family

David Muir might not have the kind of lifestyle that would allow him to start his own family, but he does relish any opportunity to spend time with his loved ones.

Muir never passes up a chance to gush over his nieces and nephews. Back in 2017, he shared a picture to Instagram of himself bonding with three of them, cheekily writing, "Bring #4 next time." More recently, he also shared a congratulatory post in honor of one of his niece's graduations. "A proud uncle in there," he wrote. As for his bond with his sister, they seem pretty tight, too. In a post shared on her birthday, he toasted her with the caption, "Here's to puppies, pop-ups and porches." Perhaps the first of those was a reference to her taking on Pryor, a couple years, well, prior.

Speaking of puppies, it would be remiss not to note that arguably the biggest feature in Muir's personal life, these days, is his dog, Axel. On top of the numerous pictures shared of his furry bestie, he's even poked fun at making accommodations for him in his busy schedule — kind of like one would for a human child. "What do you mean you're working on Sunday," he captioned one image, of a side-eyeing Axel, back in 2020. So, what do we know about Muir's personal life? He may not be in a relationship (that we know of), but he's surrounded by love, nonetheless.
