Ryan Gosling And Rachel McAdams Actually Started Dating Long After The Notebook

Despite parting ways over a decade ago, many fans are still holding on to hope that Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling will cross paths and get back together. The two starred in "The Notebook," where they played two lovers separated by unfortunate circumstances and reunited later in life. Their on-screen chemistry was off the charts, to say the least, with the two clinching an award for Best Kiss at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards.

According to Gosling, he considers McAdams one of his greatest loves, and he owes it all to the film. "I mean, God bless 'The Notebook,'" he told GQ. "It introduced me to one of the great loves of my life. But people do Rachel and me a disservice by assuming we were anything like the people in that movie. Rachel and my love story is a hell of a lot more romantic than that."

He wasn't kidding when he said their love story was romantic. Theirs was everyone's favorite enemies-to-lovers trope because, as it turns out, they couldn't stand each other the first time they met.

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams got off on the wrong foot

If you're a fan of "The Notebook," then you were probably impressed by the passionate affection Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams displayed toward each other in the film. But according to director Nick Cassavetes, that passion was actually channeled through hatred, as the two actors butted heads during the early days of filming.

"Maybe I'm not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not," he told VH1, adding that it had gotten to the point where Gosling asked to stop working with McAdams altogether. "[Gosling] says, 'Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?' I said, 'What?' He says, 'I can't. I can't do it with her. I'm just not getting anything from this.'"

Gosling didn't deny that the two would quarrel, telling The Guardian that they hated each other from the get-go. "We inspired the worst in each other. It was a strange experience, making a love story and not getting along with your co-star in any way," he dished, later admitting that somewhere along the way, long after "The Notebook" had its day in theaters, the two reconnected and started their love story — in real life this time. "I don't know what happened," he shared. "Two years later I saw her in New York and we started getting the idea that maybe we were wrong about each other."

Why Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams broke up

But all good things must come to an end. Sadly, after two years of dating, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams called it quits. Per Gosling, it's because their relationship was too public, and the constant attention got in the way of their romance.

"Showbusiness is the bad guy," he told The Times UK (via HuffPost). "When both people are in show business it's too much showbusiness. It takes all of the light, so nothing else can grow." After a heated argument at one point in their relationship, they decided it was better to part ways. "The only thing I remember is we both went down swingin' and we called it a draw," he shared with GQ and added that he had to console fans when news of their breakup got out. "Women are mad at me... A girl came up to me on the street and she almost smacked me," he recalled. "I feel like I want to give people hugs, they seem so sad."

The good news is there's no bad blood between the two. McAdams isn't even closing the door on a possible future collaboration with her ex. "Not at all, I'd love to work with [Ryan] again," she told Yahoo! Movies when the topic of Gosling almost playing Doctor Strange was brought up. "I didn't know that [he was linked with Doctor Strange]. Benedict was signed on when it came across my plate so he's the only ever Doctor Strange I've known of."
