Who Are All The One Hit Wonders In Uber One's Super Bowl 2023 Commercial?

Back in the '90s and early 2000s, music listeners couldn't turn on a radio without hearing a song from the artist now known as Sean "Diddy" Combs. Known by many as "Puff Daddy," and "P. Diddy," the New York-born talent has had an extensive career in the industry. After getting his start as an A&R executive at Uptown Records, the "Press Play" rapper began to form his influential music empire by creating Bad Boy Entertainment in 1993, per The Guardian. With artists like The Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, and 112 under his belt, Combs' influence and notorious ad-libs became staples on the radio and across thousands of stages.

When reflecting on "the purpose of [his] power," the Ciroc Vodka owner told Oprah: "[My purpose is] to inspire others and to show people what is possible. I want my life to be about more than just fame or jewelry, or parties. Hip-hop has the power to change the world. I am here to lead by example." Over the last few years, Combs has continued to showcase his musical expertise and legacy across various mediums –– including his new star-studded Super Bowl commercial with Uber. However, in addition to his own talent, Combs brought in an array of popular artists from the '90s and 2000s for the special occasion.

Diddy taps Kelis, Montell Jordan, and Donna Lewis for Uber One's Super Bowl commercial

On February 12, sports enthusiasts worldwide are set to tune in to the Super Bowl LVII –– which is set to feature the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. While the event is sure to feature an array of eye-opening plays along with Rihanna's grand return to the music world, it's also going to feature various Super Bowl commercials. One of the adverts in the lineup is a collaboration between Sean "Diddy" Combs and Uber One, per People. At the start of the hilarious commercial, heads of the ride-share company ask the producer to make a hit for their new membership. "You want me to do a jingle," Combs says, to which his bodyguard adds, "Diddy don't do jingles."

However, instead of tackling the Uber One ditty by himself, the "Coming Home" rapper called in an array of iconic "one-hit wonders" –– including Montell Jordan, Kelis, and Donna Lewis — to customize their specific hit singles for the partnership. In a statement to USA Today, Uber One's Global Executive Creative Director Danielle Hawley gave insight into the commercial. "As the only global company that helps you go anywhere and get anything, our membership program is the best way to save," she said. "We want people to remember that, so for this year's Super Bowl ad, we set out to help everyone get Uber One stuck in their heads."

The Uber One one-hit wonders ruled the charts

Before their recent appearance in Uber One's "One Hit for Uber One" commercial, Montell Jordan, Kelis and Donna Lewis ruled the charts during the height of their careers. Back in 1995, Jordan's track "This Is How We Do It" skyrocketed up the charts, resulting in it taking the number one spot on Billboard Hot 100 and a Grammy nomination. "I'm just grateful to have been a part of a great song that can live on long after me," he told Page Six regarding the song's legacy. A year after Jordan released "This Is How We Do It," the music world was introduced to Lewis' hit single "I Love You Always Forever," which, like the former, was met with instant popularity. Since its release, the song has left a lasting impact on music listeners and Lewis' industry peers, like singer Betty Who.

Back in 2016, the pop talent covered the iconic track for her second album, "The Valley." "It's one of those songs that you don't know, and when you hear it you go, 'Ah, I know this song,'" she explained to Spin. As for Kelis, 2003 proved to be one of the biggest years of her career due to her iconic single "Milkshake," which she described as a song about confidence. "A milkshake is the thing that makes women special," she told the Associated Press (via Uproxx). Like Jordan, the single was nominated for an array of accolades, including a Grammy.
