The Name That Kim Kardashian And Kanye West Almost Picked For Psalm
Celebrities are notorious for giving their children the wildest names. Seriously, it's almost as if there is an unspoken rule barring the offspring of the rich and famous from receiving the same monikers as us regular folk. The funny thing is, no one can pinpoint exactly when or why it started. According to Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard, it's probably because it's in the nature of these people to stand out. "You would expect a community of creative artists to have somewhat more unusual naming patterns than the general public," she explained. "They didn't get where they are today by being conventional thinkers."
Some celebrity parents, like Busy Philipps and ex-husband Marc Silverstein, gave their kids unconventional yet charming names. Their two daughters are adorably named Birdie Leigh and Cricket Pearl. Some, though, are straight-up bizarre, like Elon Musk and Grimes naming their children X Æ A-Xii and Exa Dark Sideræl, who are conveniently called "X" and "Y." And then there's Kim Kardashian and Kanye "Ye" West, who apparently wait days after the birth of their kids to award them with a name. The two share four children, who all have names outside of the ordinary: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.
Unlike the Kardashian clan, who all share the same initials, the Kardashian-West kids don't follow a pattern when naming their own children. But Kim once revealed that they almost named their youngest kid after his dad.
Psalm West was almost named Ye
Kim Kardashian and her ex-husband, Kanye "Ye" West, were always thoughtful and creative with their kids' names. However, for their youngest child Psalm, they almost took the traditional route by calling him Kanye Jr. In an episode of "Keeping up with the Kardashians," the Skims founder revealed they were initially going to call their son "Ye," which was West's nickname — and now legal name.
"His name was going to [be] Ye, but Kanye didn't like Ye because Ye doesn't mean anything," she shared. "We looked up every name in the bible that had Ye in the beginning, and the only name was Yehezkel." Her baby sister Kylie Jenner was apparently opposed to the idea, too. "[She] called at the last second and was like, 'No!'"
In the end, they named their youngest son Psalm, and per Kris Jenner, it's all thanks to Ye's renewed passion for his religion. "The inspiration was the Book of Psalms in the Bible," Jenner shared with ET. "I think it's just a wonderful way to celebrate how they feel. And he's such a blessing, so it's perfect."
How Kim Kardashian and Kanye West choose baby names
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's children do indeed have the most creative names, but according to Kardashian, their whole family gets to have a say on what the final moniker will be. "We all weigh in. I definitely take a family survey, but it's usually after the baby's born, and we're trying to figure out what the baby looks like," she said during a "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" appearance in 2019. "I usually go about three or four days nameless until I feel like it really connects with the baby." Kardashian also revealed that they planned on naming Psalm after her brother, Rob Kardashian. "But then it's kind of like North, Saint, Chicago, Rob," she added. "It doesn't really go, but I was really feeling that. And my brother approved it, so that's like our one kind of name."
A source also revealed that — apart from the Kardashian crew — West was also deeply involved in the name selection. "He and Kim do exactly what every couple does, where they each bring up names and the other one gives their feedback. It's very traditional that way," they shared with People. "Kanye would never just choose a name that Kim doesn't like, or vice versa. The names are things that they mutually agree upon."
