Nick Carter's Sexual Assault Case Under Review By District Attorney

Prosecutors are reviewing disturbing allegations made against pop star Nick Carter.

On Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office confirmed to multiple media outlets that a sexual assault case involving the Backstreet Boy singer is currently under review.

According to E! News, the case had been presented on Tuesday, July 31, following the Santa Monica Police Department's months-long investigation into the matter. In a statement to the publication, SMPD Lieutenant Saul Rodriguez revealed, "I can confirm a victim came forward to Santa Monica PD in Feb. 2018 regarding an alleged sexual misconduct involving Mr. Carter in 2003."

While authorities have yet to release the identity of Carter's accuser, Melissa Schuman of the girl-group Dream filed a police report with the SMPD in February 2018 after accusing Carter of rape last November. As Nicki Swift previously reported, the 33-year-old former pop star claimed in a blog post at the time that the alleged incident occurred in the early 2000s. Prior to going to the police, Schuman tweeted, "I'm finally doing what I thought I could no longer do. [I'm] filing a police report. Thank you @RAINN for empowering me to take this step."

Carter, 38, had vehemently denied the allegations, saying that he was "shocked and saddened" by them. "Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual," the boy band singer stated. "This is the first that I am hearing about these accusations, nearly two decades later. It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm."

At the time of this writing, further details surrounding the current case made against Carter are unknown, and the "Incomplete" singer has yet to publicly comment on this recent development.

Amid the momentum of the #MeToo movement, Carter was just one of multiple powerful man in the entertainment industry to be accused of sexual misconduct after Harvey Weinstein's ongoing sexual abuse scandal broke last October.
