Why Cameron Diaz Is Being Secretive About Her Baby

Bad Teacher star Cameron Diaz, 47, and Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden, 40, surprised fans with a birth announcement on Jan. 3, 2020. The low-key Hollywood couple, who married in 2015, announced the birth of their first child on Instagram via identical messages: "Happy New Year from the Maddens! We are so happy, blessed and grateful to begin this new decade by announcing the birth of our daughter, Raddix Maddon." Talk about a unique moniker, right?

Of course, fans are itching to know more about little Raddix and the details surrounding her entrance into this world, but don't get your hopes up because it doesn't look like Diaz and Madden will be blowing up our feeds with baby pics anytime soon. "While we are overjoyed to share this news, we also feel a strong instinct to protect our little one's privacy," the pair said in its statement. "So we won't be posting pictures or sharing any more details, other than the fact that she is really cute!! Some would even say RAD."

Although we're all about parents making informed decisions about what's best for their family, we can't help but wonder: Why is Cameron Diaz is being so secretive about her baby? Here are some compelling reasons for Diaz to keep mum about motherhood.

Cameron Diaz is 'literally doing nothing'

Once upon a time, Cameron Diaz was one of Hollywood's most well-known actors, starring in critically-acclaimed films such as Gangs of New York and Vanilla Sky as well as delightful romcoms like There's Something About Mary and My Best Friend's Wedding. But after starring in the heavily panned film adaptation of Annie in 2014, this California native seemed to retreat from the limelight. Amidst rampant speculation about her future in Hollywood, Diaz even eluded to her own retirement from acting.

"Maybe I should, you know, I mean, I'm down," she said during a 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I'm literally doing nothing." That interview also included The Sweetest Thing co-stars Christina Applegate and Selma Blair, and considering all the witty banter that transpired, it's anyone's guess as to whether Diaz was being serious or sarcastic. That said, Blair added fuel to the retirement fire at a Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2018, when she said (via Complex) that a Sweetest Thing sequel probably wasn't in the cards because "Cameron's retired from acting." Blair later retracted her statement in a since-deleted tweet, saying it was a "joke," but Diaz hasn't appeared in any movies since.

Retired or not, Diaz has seemingly made a conscious decision to leave fame behind, so sheltering baby Raddix from the spotlight is in keeping with her low-key M.O. You do you, momma!

Cameron Diaz is loving her low-key lifestyle

At the height of her fame, Cameron Diaz might have seemed like an A-lister preoccupied with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, but in reality, her priorities are world's away from the showbiz scene. "The most important things in my life are my relationships and my well-being — where I'm going as a human being in my development mentally, emotionally, and physically," she told Women's Health in April 2016.

Speaking of relationships, Diaz and Benji Madden have also made a conscious effort to keep their union out of the limelight. The two superstars have had high-profile romances in the past, but they rarely talk about their marriage. In fact, it sounds like Diaz would prefer to stay at home with her man instead of traipsing down red carpets with him. "She feels she spent so many years working a grueling schedule," a source told Us Weekly in 2017. "She just wants to have a slow pace and normal routine now. She's loving this time in her life."

Now that sweet baby Raddix has entered their inner circle, don't expect Diaz and Madden to rejoin the rat race anytime soon.

Can Cameron and Benji's loved ones keep a secret?

Although Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden might keep their lips sealed regarding little Raddix's life, it's possible their family and friends won't be as secretive. Diaz's brother-in-law, Joel Madden, and his wife, Nicole Richie, are very much in the public eye, so maybe just maybe they'll blab about the bundle of joy. You never know, right? Joel did share a bunch of red heart emojis when reposting the baby announcement, so that's a start. Outside of family, Cameron and Benji have plenty of high-profile friends who might share some sweet details with the press. Of course, Raddix' mom and dad are well aware of the risks and proactively turned off the comments on their baby announcement.

Our money's on Diaz's Charlie's Angels co-star Drew Barrymore. The two are pretty tight, and Barrymore doesn't seem like the type of person who can hold in good news for too long. Translation: Keep your eyes peeled for more info about Raddix. Until then, let's take a closer look at some of the weird and wonderful things about Cameron Diaz's marriage.
