Donald Trump tapped Susie Wiles, his former campaign manager, for the position of his chief of staff in November 2024. Weeks before his his second inauguration, he revealed that she "just helped me achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history" (via BBC).
Susie Wiles is the top aide who dares to tell Trump the truth when few others do, and one of the few who haven't actually quit Trump's administration, but her upbringing was anything but easy. Her father was Pat Summerall, the NFL pro-turned-broadcaster, who openly discussed his struggles with alcoholism. His substance use caused his marriage to Wiles' mother to crumble, but it also affected her and her siblings. "My children grew up without me. I failed them as a father," Summerall admitted in his memoir, "Summerall: On and Off Air," per Daily Mail.
Fortunately, he was able to beat his addiction before he died in 2013, partially encouraged by a letter that Wiles penned to him during his treatment. "When my mom decided that he needed professional treatment, part of the prescription was for each of the children to write a letter, which he didn't read until he got into, in his case, the Betty Ford Clinic," she shared with the NY Post in July 2025. The letter was filled with Wiles' candid thoughts about his addiction and their relationship. "I said that sometimes I didn't really want to share the same name, because he was doing so much that I didn't respect..." she continued. "It got his attention, apparently."

Susie Wiles has been diagnosed with breast cancer
Susie Wiles lived through a rather tumultuous childhood, but she still managed to achieve success. But in a shocking turn of events, Trump's chief of staff took to X to announce that she had breast cancer on March 16, 2026. "Last week, I was diagnosed with breast cancer," she wrote, clearly not about to become one of the celebrities who hid a scary cancer diagnosis. "Nearly one in eight women in the United States will face this diagnosis. Every day, these women continue to raise their families, go to work, and serve their communities with strength and determination. I now join their ranks." She also expressed her gratitude towards her doctors, who diagnosed her early.
Trump also acknowledged Wiles' health scare. "Susie Wiles is an incredible Chief of Staff, a great person, and one of the strongest people I know but, unfortunately, she has been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, and has decided to take on this challenge, IMMEDIATELY, as opposed to waiting," he posted to Truth Social. "She has a fantastic medical team, and her prognosis is excellent!" Trump said she's committed to "serving the American people."
As Trump mentioned, the prognosis for an early breast cancer diagnosis is promising. Per the American Cancer Society, 99 % of patients diagnosed and treated in the localized stage live at least five years.
