Becki Newton's Stunning Transformation

Growing up, Becki Newton was gifted in many ways. She was a skilled writer and also had an ear for music. Becki eventually became interested in musical theater (joining stars like Tom Holland, who also has a background in the genre), courtesy of her brother Matt Newton. However, it was her first professional job — mimicking a popular character — that truly represented what the future would hold. "I was paid to be Barney the dinosaur at children's birthday parties, and I got paid $25 per party," Becki recalled in an interview with Daily Actor

Well, Becki has since devoted herself to playing many other beloved characters and gathered a committed fan base. Over the years, she has graced both the big and small screens, appearing in projects such as "Otherhood," "Weird Loners," and the Academy Award-nominated "August Rush." Of course, Becki's efforts haven't gone unrecognized.

In 2009, she won the Comedy Actress of the Year at the Glamour Awards. Becki has also been nominated for several awards, including the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2008 International Online Cinema Awards. Her career has stood the test of time. From playing the "nastiest" characters early on, as she told Buzzfeed in 2015, to portraying the industrious legal assistant-turned-attorney Lorna Crane on "The Lincoln Lawyer," Becki has undergone a stunning transformation.

Becki Newton was raised in the Connecticut woods

Becki Newton was born Rebecca Sara Newton to Jennifer and Thomas Newton on July 4, 1978. Becki and her brother, Matt Newton, grew up in the Connecticut woods, as Matt shared in an interview with New Haven Register. The duo's childhood was nothing like the glitz and glam of Hollywood; they were raised in a tiny "Lincoln-log-style cabin." Nevertheless, Becki's childhood was wholesome because of her family's lively nature.

"We're an easygoing, fun family," the actor shared in a chat with TV Guide. "We have a Fourth of July party and a volleyball tournament, and the losers have to do "the loser dance," which is carefully choreographed by the winning team." In fact, one of Becki's biggest shake-ups was leaving her family on the East Coast to pursue her acting dreams. They eventually built a bigger home on the Connecticut property.

If she wasn't an actor, Becki may have been a Pulitzer Prize winner. In a piece for Self, Becki recalls how her third-grade teacher, Mrs. Otte, was impressed when she wrote a poem about her cat. That talent, she wrote, would follow her all the way through college, but it took a back seat afterward. "After I graduated, my prose dwindled to email and shopping lists," Becki recollects.

She began acting as a teenager and eventually attended the University of Pennsylvania

Becki Newton attended a high school in Guilford, Connecticut, where she was an active musical theater student. According to the actor, music gradually led her to develop a passion for acting. "I was lucky enough to have a grandma [Fannie Chase] who was a violin teacher," Newton told Stay Thirsty Magazine. "I remember her teaching me to read music by writing a staff on a big piece of brown paper and laying it on the floor."

Even after she "discovered" theater, Newton held back from pursuing the craft. As a matter of fact, she went on to study European History at the University of Pennsylvania. The institution has a long list of notable alumni making waves in the political and entertainment scenes, including President Donald Trump and singer John Legend, whose stage name was given to him by Kanye West. As a student, Newton had access to adventurous opportunities, such as visiting Spain and getting good at Spanish.

Newton was an introverted student. "I wasn't exactly a social butterfly or leader on campus," the actor later told Penn Alumni (via Instagram), adding that her attempts to join a capella groups were unsuccessful. While other students were out partying on Friday nights, Newton stayed indoors. Nonetheless, she recalled that she had her fair share of good memories, such as having pancakes with her friends on Sunday mornings.

Becki Newton moved to New York and became a commercial model

Becki Newton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000. She moved to New York to pursue acting, often falling flat on her face. Speaking to Huffpost, Newton shared that, at the time, she was armed with a beginner's mindset and tried for all the roles she could. Even ones where she was clearly not the ideal choice. "I auditioned for every play, even if they were looking for a 50-year-old African-American person, which confused a lot of casting directors," Becki recalled.

Even though her dream of being an actor didn't go as planned during that period, Newton did land jobs in commercials. The money she made allowed her to fly to Los Angeles for auditions. Her first job was as a host on "Burly TV," a variety show that targeted college students. In 2003, Newton played a young Melanie Whitley (Lisa Waltz) on an episode of "Cold Case." She went on to have short stints on other shows, such as "Guiding Light," "American Dreams," and "Charmed."

Newton shot her final commercial (for Olive Garden) right before she was cast as Amanda Tanen-Sommers on "Ugly Betty." This commercial was memorable, as it aired at the same time as the ABC series. "Everyone on set called me "Breadsticks,"" Newton shared in her chat with Stay Thirsty Magazine. "They even wrote an episode wherein my character Amanda was in a commercial for a restaurant chain called "Medieval Times.""

She tied the knot with fellow actor Chris Diamantopoulos

Becki Newton and Toronto-born actor Chris Diamantopoulos first met in a scene straight out of a movie script. The pair were on a subway platform, ready to catch the next train. "We walked by each other and looked up at the same time," Newton recalled in her interview with Stay Thirsty Magazine. "I couldn't help but smile at him, there was just something about him." As it turned out, the feeling was mutual. Seconds later, Diamantopoulos tapped Newton's shoulder, claiming to have lost his way.

One thing led to another, and the duo said "I do" in 2005. Newton and Diamantopoulos have always supported each other. In her conversation with Daily Actor, Newton revealed that when she moved from New York to Los Angeles, she relied on Diamantopoulos and her friends to drive her, since she was scared of getting behind the wheel.

Newton helped Diamantopoulos land a role in the 2012 comedy "The Three Stooges"; the audition was her idea, as her husband told Collider. She knew that he was a fan of the original series, which featured Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Larry Vincent as a trio. Diamantopoulos also leaned on Newton for support during the COVID-19 pandemic. "My wife has been really wonderful in helping me find my calm," the "Dark Matter" actor told Mr. Feel Good.

She landed her breakout role on the ABC series Ugly Betty

Becki Newton finally got thrust into the spotlight when she portrayed Amanda Tanen on the ABC series "Ugly Betty." The series premiered on the network in 2006 and ran for four seasons until 2010. Newton's character works as a receptionist at fashion magazine, MODE, and is the first to cross paths with new hire Betty Suarez (America Ferrera). The pair's relationship gets off to a rocky start because Tanen wanted Suarez's editorial assistant job, but they eventually become pals.

In many ways, Newton could identify with her character. "She was a wannabe fashionista working at a fashion magazine. I had never been on a red carpet before," Newton explained in an interview with Photobook. "I was able to tap into her insecurities pretty quickly because chances are we had more in common than it appeared." Tanen wasn't a picture-perfect character in any way. According to Newton, she was the "sluttiest, most inebriated person on TV," but playing her was necessary because it represented the messy side of being human (via Buzzfeed).

The set of "Ugly Betty" became Newton's training ground in the art of acting, according to Stay Thirsty Magazine. Working alongside Vanessa Williams and Judith Light, who portrayed Wilhelmina Slater and Claire Meade respectively, helped her improve her skills. The pair are both incredibly talented actors who received several Primetime Emmy nominations for their roles. Williams was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress multiple times, while Light earned an Outstanding Guest Actress nomination in 2007.

Becki Newton took salsa and gymnastics classes during a week of 'Why Nots?'

Becki Newton took on the challenge of completing a week of "Why Nots?" in 2009 and documented her experience in her article for Self. She tried gymnastics as part of the exercise, and although she dreaded the thought of wearing a leotard (and being an amateur in a class full of pros), everything turned out great. "I left feeling strong and capable — as if I'd conquered not only the world but the leotard, too," Newton wrote, with a promise to take on weekly classes. "So much fun and an incredible workout."

Newton opted for thrilling activities such as kayaking, as well as gentler pursuits like painting lessons from her mom, but physical activity appeared to be the dominant pick. She explained that she had always loved dancing, but her skills were modest at best. She took a salsa lesson with choreographer Luis Salgado, and, in the end, found herself "actually dancing! It was a dream come true," Newton expressed.

Although she shared that she wouldn't be joining any salsa club, we know exactly what other physical activity Newton is likely to embrace: a walk or jog with her husband, Chris Diamantopoulos. The Diamantopoulos-Newton household appears to have a passion for outdoor exercise. In 2022, Newton, who was expecting their fourth child, was photographed walking alongside a shirtless Diamantopoulos in Los Feliz, California. Similarly, the following year, the duo was seen out jogging, and as usual, Diamantopoulos was bare-chested.

Becki Newton and Chris Diamantopoulos welcomed their first child

Although Becki Newton and Chris Diamantopoulos are public figures, they have maintained a very low profile when it comes to their children. In July 2010, it was reported that Newton was expecting their first child. Concerns were raised about the then-31-year-old's work life, and word on the street was that the timelines of her new show, "Love Bites," had been adjusted to accommodate her pregnancy and delivery. Newton and Diamantopoulos welcomed a baby boy in November 2010.

Newton and Diamantopoulos had their second child, a baby girl, in 2014. Six years later, during an Instagram Live session with her "Ugly Betty" co-star Michael Urie, Newton revealed that they had been blessed with their third baby. The couple's representative eventually disclosed that they were expecting their fourth child in 2022 (via JustJared). While the duo has been hush-hush about the names of their children, Newton has opened up about the reality of being a working mother.

"[Motherhood] has changed my perspective immensely on work," the "American Dad" actor told Photobook, adding that, as an actor on "The Lincoln Lawyer," she brought her baby to the set. The network, she said, was very accommodating, as were the other members of the crew. "Every time the director yelled "cut" I would run to sit with the baby. The hair and makeup team would hold her while I got my makeup touched up. I felt what it was like to have the support of a village."

She achieved her dream of working with Neil Patrick Harris

It's not often that actors predict their next roles, but Becki Newton did exactly that. When she watched "How I Met Your Mother," which premiered on CBS in 2005, Newton knew she wanted to play the lead character, Barney Stinson's (Neil Patrick Harris) love interest. Armed with a determined spirit, Newton made a pitch that was, unsurprisingly, accepted. "It was incredibly arrogant of me to think that I could do something like that, but it just shows how much I really wanted it to happen," Newton told The Hollywood Reporter.

Newton made her debut as Quinn Garvey in Season 7 of "How I Met Your Mother," which premiered in September 2011. Garvey and Stinson meet at the club, and as he pulls his best moves to charm her, she declines. Stinson and Garvey have a push-and-pull relationship that includes a dance at the strip club where the latter works. The pair eventually decides to live together, a move that is unprecedented, as Stinson is known not to live with his partners.

In the end, Stinson and Garvey break up, and she returns to being a stripper. It goes without saying that Newton had a great time on set. When she was asked what it was like to work with the five-time Emmy winner, she told the "Behind the Velvet Rope" podcast, "[It was] so much fun! ... It was the efficiency of, like, how they felt. And they all knew their characters so well. So, I just got to pop in. It almost felt like theater."

She sponsored a doll-making workshop to support the Samburu Trust

Over the years, Becki Newton and her husband, Chris Diamantopoulos, have shown support to numerous charities and social causes. Diamantopoulos once joined other celebrities in a PETA initiative to save dogs left in hot cars (although some of PETA's campaigns, such as one featuring Pamela Anderson, have been controversial). In 2024, he was honored at the Hellenic Charity Ball GALA. The event is known for raising funds to help preserve Greek culture by working with affiliated charities.

Newton, on the other hand, was pictured attending a Save the Children event at Esquire Soho in October 2009. Nearly a decade later (2018), she announced on GoFundMe that she would sponsor a doll-making workshop in support of the Samburu Trust. The "Tell Me A Story" actor asked the public to chime in and help raise $20,000 towards the cause. Newton began by highlighting her interest in fashion, which started when she was young.

"I had visions of becoming a fashion designer and made my own clothes in high school," she shared, adding that her daughter had picked up the same passion. Newton asserted that the drive would "empower the Samburu people to sustain their families and give them freedom to live the life they choose." Later on, she promised to host a SoulCycle event in New York to help meet the target. Thankfully, her online community rose to the occasion and helped her reach the full amount.

She entered the growing world of celebrity podcasting

The world of podcasting has been growing rapidly — comedian Amy Poehler won a Golden Globe Award for Best Podcast in January 2026 — and Becki Newton hasn't been left out of the loop. In fact, Newton and her "Ugly Betty" co-star Michael Urie were ahead of their time when they hosted an "Ugly Betty" recap series while it was on air. In 2025, the duo teamed up again to host the "Still Ugly" podcast. "We talked about every single episode. So, this was inevitable," Urie told Deadline.

During their first episode, the pair reminisced about old times, recalling how an endorsement by Oprah Winfrey catapulted the show to fame. Urie and Newton also interviewed their "Ugly Betty" co-star, America Ferrera, who shared details about the series' incredible behind-the-scenes direction as well as the influence she had on casting decisions. Apparently, Urie's character — the loyal personal assistant of Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) — was originally meant to be replaced each episode.

Newton and Urie proceeded to unpack different episodes of "Ugly Betty" throughout Season 1 of "Still Ugly." At the time of writing, the pair have yet to resume for a second season. However, for Newton, the opportunity was surreal. "I'm grateful that all these years later, Michael and I ... we still somehow together are on this crazy ride of showbiz," she told Deadline. "I find that pretty great that we still get to laugh about it and enjoy it and call each other with funny set stories."

Becki Newton continues to portray legal aide Lorna Crane on the drama series The Lincoln Lawyer

Becki Newton began portraying legal aide Lorna Crane on the Netflix series "The Lincoln Lawyer" in 2022. Crane is the main character, Mickey Haller's (Manuel Garcia-Ruflo) second ex-wife, who works her way up from being his legal assistant. She charms the audience by helping Haller free a wrongfully convicted client, works her way through law school, and establishes a powerful presence in the courtroom as she handles her own clients.

The show is based on a novel series by author Michael Connelly that bears the same name. Newton was intrigued by Crane because she was unlike any role she's had before. "I was really drawn to the character of Lorna and the idea of playing this character within a legal dramatic context," the actor told Looper. "I thought that would be a different type of tone than I'd ever done before and something I really wanted to tackle, and I'm really glad I did."

At the time of writing, "The Lincoln Lawyer" is set to return for a fifth season. The series will feature new recurring guest stars, including Newton's husband, Chris Diamantopoulos. Of course, Newton herself will be making a comeback. In Season 4, we watched her take over Haller's clients, gang up with his other ex-wife, Maggie McPherson (Neve Campbell), and clash with her husband, Cisco (Angus Sampson). As expected, fans can't wait for the twists and turns around Crane's life in Season 5.
