These Celebs Try To Avoid Public Restrooms At All Costs

As the saying goes, celebrities are just like us. Just because they're an A-lister doesn't mean they're exempt from the bodily functions all humans experience every single day. Luckily, public restrooms are available almost everywhere. Some people avoid using public restrooms in general, due to poor upkeep and a lack of privacy. However, there are moments when public restrooms cannot be avoided — when you have to go, you have to go. The same rule applies for many celebrities, but there are some who simply refuse.

Many celebrities get used to the finer things in life. Constantly being pushed into the public eye can create a certain protectiveness over rare moments of privacy, including going to the bathroom. Others simply don't want to risk getting recognized in such an awkward scenario. And some, unfortunately, are just plain snobs — a personality trait that develops along with a growing ego formed by constant attention.

Lady Gaga has a good excuse when it comes to avoiding public restrooms, especially while on tour. But in a 2011 interview with Alan Carr on his show "Chatty Man," she revealed, "I do quite often pee in the dressing room, in the trash can. ... The bathroom is down the hall and you must get redressed. So I said: 'F*** it!'" (via Tyla). Gaga, who's often seen in intricate, difficult-to-remove outfits, definitely gets a pass for avoiding public restrooms before performing. When there's a show to put on, no mere minutes can be sacrificed. "Otherwise, I'd be Latey Gaga," she joked.

Speaking of intricate outfits, she went on to describe her dressing room release that took place before the interview. Bent over a trash can, Gaga was wearing a large hot pink bow. "And I was naked. It was just me, my bow and my nakedness," she revealed to Carr. At least Gaga's moments of relief have been private, save for her telling the story on a talk show. We can't soon forget Justin Bieber's rebel phase, which included videographic evidence of him peeing into a restaurant's mop bucket, laughing at the sight.

On Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast, Ed Sheeran revealed his problem with men's public restrooms. "My rule usually is I don't go to urinals," he told Shepard. "There will be 20 urinals, and I will stand at an end one, and someone will come and stand right next to me just to have a look. And so my rule is I usually don't." While this writer isn't particularly familiar with the inner workings of the men's room, isn't there an unspoken rule against peeking? It seems that when it comes to celebrities, social rules tend to be forgotten.

The "Azizam" singer went on to divulge another uncomfortable reason why he avoids public urinals. Sometimes, running into a fellow celebrity is worse than being greeted by a fan, especially in the bathroom. According to Sheeran, there have been a few times this has happened to him, including one time he ended up next to "Game of Thrones" actor Kit Harington. "You're there, and you're like, 'Oh my god. This is kind of awkward. I'm next to Jon Snow.' Not knowing that he's thinking, Oh my god, this is so awkward."

In 2023, The Sun reported that Beyoncé purportedly brought her own personal toilet seats to use while on her Renaissance tour, to avoid sitting on used ones in public restrooms. The outlet acquired a photograph of a backstage container labeled "Beyoncé toilet seats." Plus, a source told the tabloid, "Beyoncé is such an elite performer she can literally request anything. Her team makes great effort to ensure she has her own comforts and a personal toilet seat happens to be one." So, the source would have people believe that Beyoncé paid thousands to use fresh toilet seats every time.

This rumor was quickly shut down by none other than Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mother. In an interview with TMZ, Knowles laughed the rumor off as "ridiculous." As for those mysterious labeled boxes backstage? According to Knowles, they're not actually for toilet seats. "Those are stands that you put fans on, they're called toilet seats," she told TMZ. While only true touring roadies can confirm this, the toilet seat rumor has been debunked as of now. however, it's one that has actually been around for over a decade. Back in 2013, the Daily Star (via E! News) claimed that Beyoncé's tour rider included a request for a single unused toilet seat.

Jennifer Lopez has been labeled a certified diva for quite some time now, but it was what she reportedly did at the Robin Hood Foundation gala that took it to the next level. As we all know, public restrooms are shared spaces, and from this incident, it's obvious that Lopez doesn't like to share. The singer apparently shut down the public bathroom entirely to leave it completely empty for her use only — in other words, she temporarily stripped it of its communal commode status. A witness told Page Six, "Four security guards shut down the ladies' room for her at the Javits Center. ... A huge line of ladies — including [society grande dame] Deeda Blair — were waiting for her to come out so they could go in."

Some witnesses thought perhaps major politicians were using the restroom, but Lopez's then-boyfriend, pro baseball player Alex Rodriguez, standing off to the side gave away who exactly needed all that bathroom space. The witness continued, "Then J.Lo strode out with the guards in tow and the regular people were let in. It was insane!" A-Rod was a co-chair of the event, which perhaps meant amped up bathroom privileges for Lopez. Well, if anyone were to flaunt their diva behavior at a major celebrity charity event, it's J.Lo.
