Mike & Molly's Billy Gardell Is Unrecognizable After His Major Weight Loss

Fans of "Mike & Molly" remember Billy Gardell as Mike Biggs, the Chicago police officer who fell in love with Melissa McCarthy's Molly Flynn at Overeaters Anonymous. Since the CBS sitcom's conclusion in 2016, Gardell has embarked on a weight-loss journey that might make him nearly unrecognizable even to the most loyal fans of the show. After losing 170 pounds in a few years, the "My Name Is Earl" actor stunned fans by showing off his much-slimmer frame that changed much more than his figure. 

As the October 2025 image below shows, Gardell's weight loss also drastically altered his face. His slimmer cheeks and chin made his facial bone structure more prominent. It also made his nose stand out more for a more mature look. Even though it has been a few years since he joined the list of celebrities who are unrecognizable after losing weight, his fans remain in awe. "Love Mike and Molly! I still can't get over how different you look now. It's like how no one knows that Clark Kent was Superman. You look great! Never stop being you," a fan gushed in one of Instagram posts from June 2026.

Others agree that he completely transformed. In a May 2026 video, Gardell pondered the mysterious reasons he couldn't have been born looking like U2's frontman Bono — something his wife also wanted to know. Fans loved it. "Bono??? You don't even look like Billy Gardell lmfao," a netizen joked. Gardell has definitely changed quite a bit, but not everything about him has changed — luckily for fans. 

Billy Gardell barely looks like himself — and he's the first one to admit it. Whereas he once would have been instantly recognizable to "Mike & Molly" fans who spotted him out in public, he now walks the streets like a complete nobody. That changes when he speaks, though. As soon as he opens his mouth, the coin immediately drops. "My voice is like a car horn. My dad used to say I should be on top of an ambulance," he joked on the "Sherri" show in January 2026. His voice does indeed help. 

When Gardell guest-starred on the second season of "Leanne" in 2026, fans had to double-check that what they were hearing matched the person who was saying it. "I didn't recognize Billy Gardell at all. He's lost so much weight. But the voice for sure," an Instagram user commented in one of his posts featuring Leanne Morgan. Gardell is grateful for his new figure not because of how he looks, but because it marked a turning point for his health. After struggling with his weight his whole life, the TV star had a strong reality check during the COVID-19 pandemic. "When the first wave hit, and they punched up that list of high-risk conditions, I had all of them," he told People in 2025.

At that point in early 2020, when his weight hit an all-time high of 380 pounds, Gardell had recently received a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. He underwent bariatric surgery in 2021 and completely changed his lifestyle. "The idea of not being here for my wife or my kid motivated my change, motivated me into I will commit to whatever it takes to get healthy," he had previously told People in 2024.
