In the years leading up to his death in March 2020, Kenny Rogers gave insight into how age and health issues had impacted his quality of life. In 2015, Rogers, then 77, confessed he was struggling with his body's limitations at his age. "I swore that I would [perform] until I embarrassed myself," he told Today. Sadly, he believed he had reached that point. "I'm getting to where I don't walk around well. ... My mobility is really driving me crazy," he admitted. That year, he announced he would go on one last tour and then retire.

Into the second year of his final tour, "The Gambler's Last Deal," Rogers once again highlighted his mobility concerns, noting that he had had to interrupt a few performances over it. And he wasn't okay with that. "This is all I've done for 60 years, but my mobility has gotten kind of strange, and I don't like to go on stage and have to apologize. It's one of those things — you make decisions based on what life gives you," he told Rolling Stone in July 2017. A few months later, Rogers expressed how much he was struggling. "Every day is not a holiday. You get out there [and] it's hard, hard work. I can't do it like I used to do it," he told Fox News (via Page Six) in October 2017.

In April 2018, he announced the cancellation of the final leg of his tour amid health concerns. His final concert took place in October 2017, which also marked the last time Rogers and longtime collaborator Dolly Parton ever sang together. Rogers continued to struggle with his health from then on.

Kenny Rogers experienced a sharp decline in health

When he announced his retirement plan in 2015, Kenny Rogers had his kids in mind, highlighting how he wanted to be more present for his young twin sons. Unfortunately, he didn't get as much time left to be with Jordan and Justin, who were 15 when Rogers died. The country star's final years were marked by a sharp decline in health, even though he fought hard to extend his life. When his tour was canceled in 2018, he reassured fans that he was doing well. "His doctors fully expect the outcome to be great," his rep told ABC News.

However, Rogers continued to experience health challenges. In May 2019, he was hospitalized for dehydration but made it a point to note his overall health was fine in an effort to dismiss the "wild misinformation and speculation" about his well-being. "[He] can assure everyone he plans on sticking around through the years to come," his team shared on his Instagram. Sadly, that wouldn't be the case. Rogers' family announced his death 10 months later. "Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family," their Facebook message revealed.

His family has kept his Instagram going, with Rogers' fifth wife, Wanda Miller, and youngest sons often paying tribute to the late singer. "We still go to the same movie theater we went to with you, and we always park in the same little spot on the side where you would park ... every single time!" Jordan and Justin wrote in a March 2026 message to mark the anniversary of his death. Rogers may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
