The Truth About Madonna's Biopic
Madonna is putting our quarantine projects to shame, as apparently, the pop superstar is well into writing a movie about her life! Yup; according to Entertainment Weekly, the "Material Girl" has teamed up with screenwriter extraordinaire Diablo Cody, who nabbed an Oscar for the 2008 film Juno, to pen a biopic — make that an auto-biopic — and the more details we get, the more we want in.
During an hour-long Instagram Live on Sept 10, 2020, the singer shared that she and Cody were 107 pages into their script. During the session, Madonna explained the film would be about her "struggle as an artist trying to survive in a man's world as a woman, and really just the journey," which she elaborated on as a "happy, sad, mad, crazy, good, bad, and ugly" rise to superstardom.
Madonna first sparked rumors of the mystery project on social media in August 2020. "When you're stuck in a house with multiple injuries what do you do?," she captioned an Instagram video on Aug. 7, 2020, "Write a Screenplay with Diablo Cody about..." Cue the music and movie emojis. According to Billboard, the star has also recently become a free agent after her 10-year record contract with Interscope reportedly ended.

What can fans expect from Madonna's biopic? According to Entertainment Weekly, the still-untitled film will have a 2-hour runtime and largely take place during her rise in the 1980s. The star described this period as "one of the best times of my life, and one of the worst times" during an Instagram Live session with director Diablo Cody. "I hope I can portray or express what a thrilling time that was for me in every way," Madonna said.
Madonna said the film will include music moments such as a "great scene of me writing 'Like a Prayer'" and some iconic characters, including Andy Warhol (who's dialogue will be "monosyllabic"), Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and more. But it's apparently not all smiles. The biopic will also chronicle her difficult stint filming Evita – the adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical. The pair reportedly clashed on set.
"I think I had a few nervous breakdowns worrying that I was going to be fired every day," she said on Instagram Live, per EW, adding that Weber "was not nice to me." Yikes! According to the New York Post, a spokesman for Webber pushed back against that claim: "She must have Andrew confused with somebody else." Double yikes.
As for who will play Madonna, per MME, some keen fans noted that the singer started following Ozark star and fellow blondie Julia Garner on Instagram. Very interesting. This film better see the light of day!
