The Sweet Way Meghan And Harry Paid Tribute To Diana With Their Pregnancy Announcement

Many loved-up couples were celebrating Valentine's Day over romantic dinners or sweet staycations, but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had the most epic holiday of all. That's because the pair commemorated the day by announcing that they are expecting their second child. "We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother," a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared in a statement on Feb. 14, 2021, via Time.

The announcement featured a black-and-white photo of the couple, with Harry placing a hand under Meghan's head as she lays in his lap, her hand cradling her baby bump. And while the news was met with an outpouring of support, including "delighted" reactions from the royals, it feels especially sweet because baby number two will be a rainbow baby for Meghan and Harry. On Nov. 25, 2020, Meghan penned a heartbreaking New York Times essay in which she revealed she had suffered a miscarriage earlier that summer. "Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few," she wrote of the tragedy.

Perhaps this new pregnancy is another step on the path toward healing for the couple. Indeed, it is a nice nod to love, but the decision to announce the pregnancy on Valentine's Day also has a deeper meaning for the growing family — one that's tied directly to Princess Diana. So, how did Prince Harry honor his late mother in the pregnancy announcement?

Princess Diana announced she was pregnant with Prince Harry on Valentine's Day

As it turns out, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose to share news of their pregnancy exactly 37 years — to the day — after British tabloids first broke the news of Princess Diana's pregnancy with Harry, according to a tweet from royal reporter Omid Scobie. "Both Prince Charles and Princess Diana are delighted by the news — as are the queen, Prince Philip and all the members of both families," Palace officials said in a statement on Feb. 13, 1984, just before the pregnancy made front-page news a day later (via United Press International).

It makes sense that Prince Harry and Meghan would choose to honor the duke's late mother with this second pregnancy announcement. After all, the couple has a history of nodding in the Princess of Wales' direction! From designing Meghan's engagement ring with diamonds from Princess Diana's personal collection, to mimicking her style of dress and carrying on with her charitable work, Harry and Meghan have ensured that Diana's legacy will live on for generations. There's no doubt that they will tell Archie's future sibling all about his or her grandmother.
