Inside Nicolas Cage's New Marriage

Nicolas Cage is a married man once again. In March 2021, the actor confirmed to People that he tied the knot with Riko Shibata on Feb. 16, 2021, marking his fifth marriage. Cage was first wed to Patricia Arquette from 1995 to 2001, and then went on to wed Lisa Marie Presley in 2002, but they called it quits in 2004. Cage was also married to Alice Kim from 2004 to 2016.

The happy news of Cage's fifth wedding comes after his very brief marriage to Erika Koike made the headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2019, as the couple were wed for only four days after a Las Vegas ceremony. The short-lived romance was a difficult one for Cage, unfortunately, as he admitted it was not something he wanted to speak about during an August 2019 interview with The New York Times Magazine. "There was a recent breakup. I don't really want to talk about it. I was pretty upset about that and the way things happened," he said.

However, Cage did not give up on love and is thankfully now happy again with his new wife. Keep reading for all the details.

Nicolas Cage and Riko Shibata married in a stunning Las Vegas ceremony

Nicolas Cage and Riko Shibata tied the knot on Feb. 16, 2021 at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas more than a year after they first met in Shiga, Japan. The couple announced in a statement and via photos exclusive to People that they enjoyed a "very small and intimate wedding" that they kept a secret from the public for more than two weeks before confirming the news on March 5, 2021. They stated that they "are very happy," and it turns out the wedding date has particular significance for Cage, as it was the birthday of his late father.

But just because they did not publicly confirm their wedding immediately does not mean it was completely a low-key affair. Both kept things formal, as Shibata wore "a handmade Japanese Bridal Kimono from Kyoto that required three layers," according to Cage's rep, while the actor looked dapper in a Tom Ford Tuxedo. Shibata walked down the aisle to "Winter Song" by Kiroro, her favorite song, and the couple exchanged both traditional Catholic and Shinto vows.

After the ceremony, the couple enjoyed a "small celebration," which was attended by Cage's 15-year-old son Kal-El Coppola Cage and his former wife, Alice Kim. Cage's rep confirmed that the two remain "very good friends" in the wake of their 2016 split.

Nicolas Cage and Riko Shibata have an unconventional relationship

Nicolas Cage and Riko Sibata have quite the interesting relationship, as it shakes up a few conventions. First off, they share quite an age gap. According to Hollywood Life, Riko turned 26 on Jan. 10, 2021, which was the day the couple applied for their marriage license. That makes her 31 years younger than the 57-year-old actor.

Not only is there several years between them, but they also have a less than traditional engagement story. The couple actually got engaged in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, with Cage proposing while they were on a video call and thousands of miles apart. Cage opened up about the engagement to Marc Coppola on his Q104.3 radio show in August 2020. "She left New York and went back to Kyoto, Japan, and I went back to Nevada and I haven't seen her for six months. We're really happy together and we're really excited to spend that time together, so I finally just said, 'Look, I wanna marry you,' and we got engaged on FaceTime," he said.

The story behind the engagement ring Cage gave Sibata is equally unconventional, as he actually sent her a black diamond ring in the mail due to their distance. "I got her a black diamond engagement ring. Her favorite color is black so she wanted the black gold, and the black diamond," Cage shared. "I customized and personalized it and I actually sent it to her [through] FedEx." Congratulations to the happy couple!
