Meghan Markle's Childhood Friends Had Worries About Her Marrying Prince Harry

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have quite the love story to tell their children someday. The couple was set up on a date by a mutual friend, which they confirmed in their engagement interview. One date turned into another date, and the two simply couldn't stay away from one another — and, even if they could, they didn't want to.

They carried on a long-distance relationship for several months, trying to make sure to reconnect in person whenever their schedules allowed. And in 2017, Harry popped the question. He got down on one knee and proposed to Meghan, never wanting to spend another day without her by his side.

While most of Meghan's friends were simply elated to hear the news, there was at least one friend — Simone Burns Dilley, who has known Meghan since high school — that was worried, according to Us Weekly. What could go wrong? Meghan was to marry a prince! But Dilley admitted that she had mixed emotions when she heard the engagement news. Keep reading to find out why.

Meghan Markle's friend shared her thoughts in a new episode of 'E! True Hollywood Story'

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's love was palpable. Everyone could see that these two were simply smitten with one another. So why was Meghan's pal, Simone Burns Dilley, worried? In a new episode of E! True Hollywood Story in March 2021, Dilley said, "She was divorced, she's half-Black. I was like, 'Oh, my God. They're gonna be so mean to her,'" according to Us Weekly. And, judging by the claims made by Meghan and Harry in their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey (via CBS News), Dilley was right.

Television and radio presenter Sarah-Jane Crawford was also featured on E! True Hollywood Story, and she pretty much solidified Dilley's concerns. "The British media do have a reputation for wanting to build someone up and bring them down again. And there were racial undertones," she said in reference to the U.K. press during a confessional interview, according to E! News.

Of course, no one would have predicted that it would have been so bad that Meghan and Harry would chose to step down as senior royals and move halfway across the country as a result.
