Since 2014, viewers have been watching new couples emerge on Lifetime's hit show "Married At First Sight." The show brings together two people who, on paper, are seemingly a perfect match. After being matched the two singles meet at the altar and immediately get married. Post-wedding life involves getting to know each other for a couple months before the instant spouses must decide whether to say married or call the whole thing off.
"MAFS" fans are well acquainted with relationship experts Dr. Viviana Coles and Pastor Calvin Roberson, who take on a whole new challenge on "Married at First Sight: Unmatchables." Rather than counseling newlyweds through the complications of matrimony, they assist 16 people who applied to be on "Married at First Sight" but, for a variety of reasons, were deemed to be "unmatchable," as they prepare for a blind date that could be the first step on the path to love.
In an exclusive interview with Nicki Swift, the dynamic duo at the heart of the new show open up about what viewers can expect to see on "Married at First Sight: Unmatchables."
'Married at First Sight: Unmatchables' has a very different tone than the original show
One thing that viewers will notice from the get-go is that "Married at First Sight: Unmatchables" has a very different tone than the original "Married at First Sight." As Dr. Viviana Coles explained, there's a lighthearted and fun vibe that runs throughout the season."I laugh because it is so outrageous. Some of the things we get to do, I'm like, 'This is so amazing,'" she said.
However, Dr. Viviana also admitted the single aspect of "MAFS: Unmatchables" that she found to be most surprising was how seriously the participants committed to taking her advice. "They took what we brought to the table, even though it was packaged in a kind of wilder-looking package," she explained. "Maybe I'm surprised at how much heart actually there was, because I knew what my intentions were. I know what Cal's intentions are: to help.
She continued, "But I love that they actually took it very seriously, for the most part, a lot of them you'll see. That was really exciting and shocking."
'Married at First Sight: Unmatchables' is a show full of heart
For Pastor Calvin Roberson, the most surprising thing he came to realize was that, for all their extreme quirks, the "Married at First Sight: Unmatchables" contestants were nonetheless "still just normal people." He explained, "I mean, it's funny, because you see people, whether on TV or people you know, 'Oh my God, that's a weird person because they may do A, B, or C. What's wrong with them?'" He added, "You have all these reactions, but when you get to know them, you're like, 'Nah, this is just a really good person who just picked up some crazy, crazy habits somewhere.'"
According to Pastor Cal, "MAFS: Unmatchables" isn't mocking those who participate in it, but rather, it's a show with a lot of heart. "The intent of the show is not just to be a fecal festival. If I can say that. Because I'm a pastor, I can't curse," Pastor Cal jokes. "But it's a show that these are people with heart, who want relationships. We're hoping that single people watch it, that married people watch it because they'll learn some of the same lessons that people learn from 'Married at First Sight.' That, 'Hey, there's hope for me.'"
