What Is Britney Spears' Relationship Like With Her Sons?

Britney Spears welcomed her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, with her now ex-husband, Kevin Federline. The pop star gave birth to her first son, Sean, in September 2005, when she was 24-years-old. Jayden was born a year later, nearly to the day, according to Showbiz Cheatsheet. When her boys were babies, Spears was often seen out and about with her them, and was constantly photographed with a baby on her hip. Paparazzi seemed to catch Spears at the most inopportune times, however, once when she was driving with Sean in her lap, according to Today, and again when she tripped and almost dropped her little one, via TMZ. Of course, she made front page news each time — and this was the inspiration for her hit song, "Piece of Me," according to The Guardian.

Spears was a doting mother, nevertheless, and she has always spoken so highly about her boys. Despite her split from Federline in 2006, Spears has done her best as a single mom. "My kids come first, always. There is nothing more rewarding than being a mom and watching my sons grow into young men," she told People magazine in 2017. "I am so lucky that I get to experience all of life's adventures with them," she added. So, what is Spears' relationship with her boys like in 2021? Keep reading to find out.

Does Britney Spears have custody of her kids?

Britney Spears lost custody of her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, back in 2007, and Kevin Federline was granted full custody, according to The Sun. Under the terms put in place by a judge, Spears was granted "two visits and one overnight stay per week" with her boys. In 2008, she was placed on a conservatorship after struggling with some mental health issues, according to The New York Times. It was at this time that she regained 50/50 custody of Sean and Jayden, according to The Sun. Things seemed to be going well for several years, and Spears was often seen spending time Sean and Jayden. However, in 2019, the custody agreement changed again. Spears' custody was dropped to 30 percent after an incident between Sean and Spears' father, Jamie Spears, Us Weekly reports. The two got in some sort of fight that caused Federline to obtain a restraining order against his ex-wife's dad.

While Britney does see her kids in 2021, she doesn't spend a lot of time with them, given the terms of the current custody agreement. When she is with them, she rarely shares photos of them on social media. As she explains, her kids are teenagers now and they are just too cool for their mom! "They are growing up and want to do their own things .... I have to ask their permission to post them because they are extremely independent little men," Britney shared in an Instagram caption on September 21.

Britney Spears would like to have another baby

Britney Spears told her Instagram followers that she celebrated her boys' birthdays with ice cream cakes. She shared that Sean Preston and Jayden James are "so tall" and "are still growing." Earlier in September, the boys went to their very first dance, and Spears admitted that she "cried for two days" after seeing her "handsome" boys in suits. "There's a lot I can't share with you all because my kids are very private, which I love, but I will tell you they are both extremely talented and I'm so incredibly blessed to have these two little men in my life," she wrote.

It's unknown if Spears' custody agreement with Kevin Federline will change if her conservatorship ends in 2021, but she does seem to really care for her kids, and likely would welcome the opportunity to spend more time with them. During a virtual court appearance back on June 23, Spears told Los Angeles Supreme Court Judge Brenda Penny that she wants to have a baby with her now-fiance, Sam Asghari. "I want to be able to get married and have a baby," she said (via CNN). Spears and Asghari got engaged in September, according to People magazine.
